Easy way to install Windshield glass for Willys Jeep CJ2a - learn from my mistakes!!!!

Yup, the first piece of glass broke quickly. The rubber seals you are supposed to use are just to thick, see what i did to get my glass installed quickly and with good success!

I used black silastic rather than rubber. It worked like a charm.

I have a 1948 CJ2A my dad bought brand new in 1948. When I broke the Windshield Glass several years ago, I tried the Rubber Gasket too. Didn’t work for me either. The original tape was like a cloth tape. I found the new Cloth tape at Beachwood Canvas p/n B2008. It fit great and was like the original. Wish I could’ve told you about this beforehand! You’re doing a fantastic job..keep it up

Thank you for the encouragement - appreciate it! Good tip - makes sense that it would have been some type of cloth tape given the technology back then, I can see that work so much better. I’ll check it out - who knows I’ll prob get involved in another one of these at some point. Thanks for the tip.

I'm about to go through the same process, got my glass and the seals from likely the same vendor you're talking about. I still have my original VEC windshield frame, though, and it won't be that windshield's first rodeo as far as glass goes. I'm hoping the seals will fit better than with the newer reproduction frames. If not... I have a roll of the same tape.

Let me know how it goes! Be really interesting to know if those seals work better for you - they are just so thick for the re-pop frame. I have been driving the Jeep around and no rattles or anything the glass seems to be fine with the tape - I was worried It might rattle around and crack if I hit a bump but it’s in their good (so far anyway)

@@retiredafce3373 Sadly, 3 months later, the glass and seals are still in the box. Been trying to get a rear axle rebuilt in my spare time first but I don't have a lot of spare time lately.

I’ve put glass in several 2A’s over the years. I didn’t use any gasket at all. Just put the glass in an used black silicone all the way around both sides. The monkey tape is a good idea but I don’t think it would hold up here in Arizona’s heat. Once again thanks for the video.

That’s a good idea - I didn’t think of using black silicone, will keep that in mind.

@@jeepcjgarage I just used black silicone to do this on Monday after breaking a glass sheet doing it with the seals. Would highly recommend using black silicone.

How exactly do you do the silicone in the windshield install? Did you put it in the channels first and then slide the glass in?

Yes, just run a thin bead around the channel and then drop the glass in, definitely do a dry run and test fit your glass first

Let the thin bead cure first to lock everything in place. Then put blue painters tape on the glass about 1/8” away from the metal and then run a finish bead of silicone around it like you’re caulking a bathtub/ shower. Dip your finger in water and smooth it out. Then remove the tape and you have an excellent looking windshield that’s incredibly robust

Are you sure that rubber is NOT for the outside seal ? there should be something in between the inside and outside windshield ? NO??

There is a different piece of rubber for that specific purpose - that one fits fine
