Thanks. I have a 1951 CJ3A arriving for refurb and this will be a project definitely doing. Figure to keep drum brakes.

What designates it as a early version versus a later version?OK I guess I didn’t wait long enough for the answer thanks a lot for the video

solid tutorial, about to do this myself. tired of having to pump the brakes to get one wheel to lock up

Nice video, thanks Scott. My 46 CJ2-a also needs a brake overhaul. I'm weighing the option of converting to 11 inch drum brakes, which seems to be a very popular conversion. Did you consider it? I'm keeping mine as-is, which is stock 134 and no overdrive and I'm thinking well maintained 9 inch brakes will do fine.

do you by chance have a link where you got the hub puller?

I noticed you put the axle bearing seal behind the backing plate. Is that correct? Mine was mounted after the backing plate?

Scott, I believe the the short primary shoe usually goes in front on most vehicles. Also does Jeep require a preload on your wheel bearing? On most vehicles the first spanner nut on the wheel bearing after being torqued is backed off to relieve the preload and then the second spanner nut is locked down to hold the adjustment.
@ScottsGarage173 жыл бұрын
Hi John, I should have backed off 1/16 of a turn after the preload. I will correct this next time I work on it. Thanks for catching this. According to Ron Fitzpatrick Jeep Parts the longer shoe faces the front of the vehicle.

@@ScottsGarage17 hmmmm that's that's first in my 38 years the primary shoes . The short linings always go to the front of vehicle .. hence ....
@sprprops12 жыл бұрын
@@johnnyautotech4722 these are not conventional self adjusting drum brakes. That is why the long shoe goes to the front.
@pauldusharm69682 жыл бұрын
Yes long shoe goes to front, also need to bend washer to one flat on out side nut acts like lock washer.
@rgnichols567 Жыл бұрын
The correct preload is torque to 50, then back off 1 flat. The outer nut then gets torqued to 50 ft pounds. Jeep had to be d iffdrent, and put the long shoe in front?? Go figure! I like to put the 11 inch brakes on the front axle, especially if larger tires are run on the jeep. Nice vid, 2 thumbs up!
