Thank you for this great idea. It made me sick to spend $45 for one cushion when I need six of them for my patio set. If I did that, I would end up spending more money than buying a new set! I wanted mine easy to take on & off, so I didn't want to stitch it closed. It would have been a pain to do that many zippers, so I finished the raw edges all around & added velcro. I have the same style cushions and was wandering how I was gonna cover then also they are more of a lounge chair length. I located indoor outdoor table cloth at dollar store but will have to measure to be sure of how much I need. But this technique is perfect. My mother always said I could see a pillow case. Great video and instructions. Rather than stitching the top closed I think it would be a good idea to use velcro or a zipper; that way you can remove the cover and wash it.

I agree with you. For future cushions we didn't sew the top closed and simply pinned it shut and that does make laundering easy. But for this cushion, which we did sew shut, it was easy to remove the stitches when we wanted to wash it. Thank you!

This is a lovely and easy project. But usually the cost of outdoor fabric is rather expensive :-( Sometimes if you wait till season's end, you can purchase new ready made cushions for the same price as sewing covers. However I still like the idea of custom made covers. Really neat project and I've done this myself too. Fun project to do. :-) Loved your video.

Thank you so much. For this project I got outdoor fabric that was on sale, but since then I've not worried about using outdoor fabric and have just used regular fabric. It lasts a season (without too much fading) and then I make new ones for the next season. Sometimes I find fabric for a couple dollars a yard. Thanks so much for watching our video.

Debbie Emerson Thanks for watching our video. Yes, I think it was 54" fabric, but I don't think that would be necessary if your cushions work with 44-45" fabric. Since making these cushions, I have also discovered more ways. One is to simply wrap your cushions with fabric like you would with a gift and then pin them in the back. So very easy. But not matter what, it's fun making new cushions for your porch. I have made several cushions using the technique in our video and I love this way. Thanks....Mary

Hi Alanda, Thanks for watching our video. It depends upon the size of your cushions and the width of the fabric that you want to use. If your fabric is wide enough to cover both the front and the back plus the seam allowance, than purchase enough to cover the length of your cushion plus several inches more to fold it down in the back and safety pin it. Thank you for watching our video, Mary. I like to get "duck" fabric because it has some weight to it, more than just cotton, per se. We have problems with mildew too as we live in Tennessee where it's so humid in the summer. There may be a spray you can put on your fabric to protect it - perhaps Scotchguard. I haven't tried it on our outdoor cushions. Otherwise, you can wash the cushion covers in a light bleach solution, but you have to be careful about it fading your colors. I know, it's not an easy problem to solve in my experience. When I make cushion covers, I only count on them to last 1 season in my area.

No, indoor outdoor material is not generally speaking waterproof, Destiny. The main difference (I think) is that outdoor fabric stands up better to fading because the color is ingrained in the fabric better. Sometimes (often) I use indoor fabric for the porch as it's usually more affordable. We change our porch decor often so the fading doesn't get out of hand. Our porch is covered so our cushions do not get wet very often. If they do, I just let them air dry and all is ok.

Hi Jenine! Thanks for watching our video about covering outdoor cushions. You would have to allow a bit of extra fabric to compensate for the thickness of your cushions (meaning the sides). This method would probably still work though. I would wrap the fabric around the cushions to get a guesstimate of how much it will take. I hope that helps you.

I didn't sew the middle seam and it seems to work just fine. If you like a perfectly tight more custom fit, then you may want to. Try it without first to see what you think. We like ours without the extra middle seam. Thanks for asking!

Hi Lynn, Thank you for watching our video. It would work nicely with old patio cushions. What I would do (and this is not scientific or anything) is just wrap the fabric around your patio cushion and mark with a pin where the two sides meet. Then add an extra inch or so for the seam allowance. Or make it a little larger than you think, try it on and adjust it accordingly. That way you will be sure it fits nicely. What type of outdoor mateiral did you buy from Joann's?

Hi Jamie, I purchased their "outdoor material" which you can usually find in their store near the upholstery fabrics (but just ask a clerk to assist). However, with that being said, I don't feel it is imperative that you get that type of fabric (as it usually costs more than indoor fabric). The advantage of outdoor fabric from what I understand is that it is more fade resistant than regular fabrics because the ink penetrates throughout the entire of the fabric. But another fabric that I often use is drop cloths (like painters use). They are a whitish material and when washed become quite soft. And they do not fade in the sun - and if they do - it's not noticeable. You can get painters drop cloths just about anywhere that paint is sold - like a home dept, lowes or menards. I hope this helps you! Thank you for watching our video. PS: I often just choose a pretty cotton material and I plan on using it for one season. Then if it fades, I don't mind. If it doesn't fade then that is even better. Depends on your budget and how long you hope to use the cushion covers.

You could use the same technique however you'd need to add a little extra width to allow for the sides of the box cushions. And also, it wouldn't fit in a "custom way" if that's important to you. If it were me, I would give it a try if I had box cushions as I'm not overly fussy about things like that. I think it would be fine.

Well, yes you can, Maria. After doing the cushions this way I've come up with more variations. And one of those variations is to close the top in a more temporary way (with safety pins on the back, for example). That way they can be taken off and washed.
