Easy Ways to Remember Phenytoin Toxicities

Some Adverse Effects and why they occur are outlined here.....
Neurologic Toxicity : Due to blocking of Sodium Channels
Hematologic Toxicity : Due to reduction of folic acid
Teratogenic Toxicity : Due to Folate Deficiency plus just because it is terotogenic
Gingival Hyperplasia : Due to Folate Deficiency

I think if you change O with A, then it covers allergic reaction including steven johnsons syndrome and TEN!

that was great. ty I rearranged the letters and i came up with D.A.M.M.N. S.t.O.P. L.I.G.H.T.S. 2 t's however. I suppose you can use one of the t's for "tipsy" O for osteopenia thanks again.

The 0 can stand for 0(zero order kinetics) for phenytoin!!

How it do peripheral neuropathy as an adverse effect infact it increase the absorbtion of vitamin b6 required for the treatment of peripheral neuritis which is its beneficial effect rather than adverse effect

Another side effect is: acneiform skin rash. Teratogenicity is: cleft lip and palate. I haven't ever found Ataxia Nistagmus and Diplopia as side effects... are u sure of those? Thanks

Yes, Ataxia, Nystagmus and Diplopia are from higher levels. Well documented with levels > than 20.

But if you do more research I am sure you will shed some light on this matter. Leave me a comment if you do end up finding the cause of toxicities. Hope this helped.
