The Wonderful 101 has that passion project feel to it. But also, I feel like this year is the year of old passionate cult classics coming back. Psychonauts 2 and Neo:The World Ends With You also scratches that sort of itch as well.

See, this is why it's so important to understand who is reviewing a game. Many people here have pointed out that the IGN and Gamespot reviews are way lower, but I don't have a frame of reference as to who those reviewers are, so it's hard to gauge exactly what that means. I know Ben Moore's tastes pretty well, so I can safely say that the reasons he loves this game are probably reasons I would dislike it.

yes, it's great to know a reviewer's history, rather than just the whole company. Ben and I usually like the same games. So I don't regret my pre-order.

easy allies and same with gametrailers of the old always got fan of the series to review the games. There are some pros and cons to that for sure. The reviews are done by people well informed of the series and the reviewers never wish game is different from what it is so they never hate it before they open the box. However the con is because it gets reviewed by fans of the series or genre it never gets a completely objective review from the perspective of a new person.
@JazGalaxy
@JazGalaxy 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah. I mean, I understand where you are coming from. But Ben seems like an absolute Mark for this project. How subjective can a reviewer be before it’s not really a “review” anymore? I don’t have the answer for that.
@thedapperdolphin1590
@thedapperdolphin1590 3 жыл бұрын
@@danielgreen4010 Yeah, that’s the problem with reviews in general. It’s basically impossible to objectively review something, and how different aspects of the game get weighed in the final score will vary by each individual. You need someone familiar with the game or genre, but that also means your reviewer is probably biased towards that thing already.
@KLee0723

This is why it is important to have different people review something. Not to say you should have someone who hates the series review it, but even new comers to a series could make for useful reviews. They may see something or not like something that someone else does like.

To be fair Gamespot's review seems to be the worst. I think it depends on what your goal is in writing a review. This one clearly isn't for everyone, heck, it's not even for me, but it doesn't seem to be a bad game in general. But if you wanna write a review that gives a grade on how much a game appeals to regular gamers, I guess a bad grade is fair.

Learn to ignore the scores and actually read the review. I know people want to hear exactly what they want when someone reviews the game that interests them, but reading the actual article usually makes it clear if the score is justified. Yeah, a lot of reviewers nowadays barely know how to play video games let alone judge them objectively, but still the score at the end of the day doesn't mean anything. For some the visuals or the spotty performance might be a deal breaker, for others if they don't understand/like the humor of the franchise will also affect their grade. Even the review above, it doesn't really say that much about the game other than the aesthetics/style/humor. How is the controls, the combat mechanics, game length, visuals in general, sound design, replayability, difficulty. It barely says anything and it ends up giving it a 9.

This game is the reason numeric scores are stupid.
@txcforever
@txcforever 3 жыл бұрын
@@JCity17 You hit the nail on the head with this comment. Like how do you rate this with a number? What that number mean to you, the reviewer, and what to your audience? Does a 9 mean you highly recommend it to anyone, that it's a masterpiece in every way, or that you enjoyed it immensely? Because objectively, the game looks last gen even for a Switch game, the story/characters are an acquired taste especially if you are not into Japanese culture, and the combat mechanics are nothing special compared to other franchises. So how do you rate it using a number?

I think it's really important to know your reviewer. I get everyone is throwing IGN and GameSpot under the bus but there review is probably more accurate for me then Ben's review. I know Ben's tastes so I understand where he's coming from. İf I didn't, and I took this as a classic 9, I might be pretty disappointed when I got it home. This is like the same score as Breath of the wild, and most people won't agree. Know your reviewers and read lots of reviews.

I had a great experience with the combat since it felt like a mixture of each previous title combined. The games map felt rewarding to explore with the new mini games but I felt like Suda 51 could possibly have the next area be in deep space if the new Nintendo console can uphold a wider map range, if he ever made a NMH4 after another decade.

I'll be frank, the review doesn't really explain how the game outweighs boring environments al the way to a 9/10? Is it just the big explorable sections that are bland??

Because No More Heroes games always have strangely bland overworlds maybe? I love NMH games but the maps look like ass.

I've only completed the first game on Wii, but that was my experience with the "open world" environments. They were quite lacking. The game won me over with other attributes instead. Mainly, I recall the combat being simply one of the most satisfying experiences I've had in a game. It was very unique and made fantastic use of the Wii motion controls. Pretty cathartic. Other than that, the game's extreme and unapologetic violence combined with a highly distinctive musical and graphical style were terrific. The game's appearance and experience are drenched in retro videogaming sensations and culture.

To be fair 6 isn't a bad number and from a technical perspective and taking the blandness of the open world into consideration, it's not hard to see why general reviewers would give it a 6. The 4/10 reviews I do not agree with tho.

@@CaptainTitforce I guess NMH series is a bit like marmite in that you'll either love it or hate it, but don't forget Gamespot originally gave classic Donkey Kong TF 6 calling it bland and uninspired. IGN reviews are also really hit and miss :-)

@@SamM_Scot Sure, but here we come to the problem that the guy at Gamespot who gave donkey kong a 6/10, most likely isn't the same one that gave this one a 6/10. (which is the problem with all big review sites, unless you really know an individual reviewers tastes) Unless it is the same person. Correct me if I'm wrong.

@@CaptainTitforce General reviewers give games like this a 6 because they're morons that don't understand why this doesn't play like Call of Duty. Stop making excuses for them. They are the gaming equivalent of anti-vaxxers. The absolute stupidest people on the planet that don't have any business reviewing games in the first place. They are the equivalent of having a blind, quadriplegic review the experience of driving an automobile.;)

@@davidaitken8503 eh I disagree. For sure there are dumb reviewers and reviews but I still think they need to be read as their own and not group every reviewer together. Also once again 6/10 is not even bad. It's above average and with the reasons I mentioned above, it can be justified. It's true that the uniqueness of Suda and other quirky directors might not be taken into account enough. I love the no more heroes games to death, but on a technical level I honestly can't give them higher than a 7. Up to this point the combat, while satisfying most of the time, is REALLY repetitive. And the games have been bogged down by performance issues since the very first game. (surprisingly enough, of all the review sites possible, Kotaku had an alright review of NMH3)

Holy moly, I enjoy this game a lot, from the 80’s/90’s references, to the anime homages, the various inspirations it draws from, but this is a bland open world game, which a mediocre gameplay loop, and weak side content. The charm of this game is what carries it, but it feels like a mid level game made in 2007. I’d give it a 6-7 at best, because giving it a 9 is insane for how much more potential a game like this has.

Giving this game 9/10 is utter madness. It's more like 6,5/10. I had a good time but the lifeless open world, numerous performance issues and bland side missions are a huge issue. The toilet minigame is funny once, then you do it an additional 20 times without any variety. The rest of them are the same.
