I'm a combat veteran that suffers from PTSD. I drive trucks, because I have trouble dealing with people. I take several pharmaceuticals every night to stabilize my mood and to sleep. These drugs have dangerous side effects. This is totally ok with the transportation industry, but if I smoke marijuana (which is completely harmless) when I'm on home time or not driving, I can lose my job and my livelihood.

You’re allowed to hold a cdl if you have a prescription for opioids and other drugs, you can drink yourself half to death and still have your job. Haven't even thought about it like that. This whole time I been hoping for some device to be invented. But like you can obviously tell if someone is high. I was trying to get a job in aviation. The FAA (With DOT Testing) Denied me because I came out dirty for Marijuana. So there's that. Such a stupid rule. I go to school for maintenance on planes, have worked in mechanic shops more dangerous than the one the new employer had, I'm no pothead either, I'd consider myself to be quite professional and exceptional in my field of work, but just because DOT says "Nope, can't use that" I've been denied an opportunity that I have been working towards for many years. Not to mention I had already been clean 2 weeks already, because I was aware of the drug test, I honestly figured it was enough time, it was a long process which required me to change my schedule around (Hard to do because of school policy). Really just unfair, and in this day in age unrealistic. They'd rather have a guy who had been partying the night before getting blackout drunk come back the next day, over someone who was at home in pain trying to just get some peaceful sleep.

I believe that pot is no more harmful the day after smoking, as alcohol is the day after drinking. And so if they can do random tests to see if people are actively high, like they do the random breathalyzer to see if someone is actively drunk, then it could be set up like that instead of the urine drug test (which tests to see if you’ve done it any time in the last month). But until those on the spot tests are readily available for trucking companies, AND are used randomly, the only way to keep people from driving high, is to do the traditional test. I don’t want to take any chances, on someone driving an 80,000 lb truck anywhere near me or my family, if they’re high.

It sounds like you won't be required to take a drug test. During the physical you will, however, be asked if you use drugs. Unfortunately, when you answer "yes" to marijuana this will cause an automatic disqualification. Hope this helps!

That is correct. As stated in the video, there are 2 classes of drivers, those who need drug testing and those who do not. Drug testing is not part of the standard DOT physical and is performed separately if needed.

Just saying the testing to randomly check for recent smoking, just isn’t being used much. Matter of fact I’d never even heard of such a thing till today. Also, I’ve smoked pot, so I’m not one of those holier than thou people. I just know that most of my pot smoking friends don’t stop smoking with a joint or a bowl at home. Most of them I know, are carrying it in their vehicles, and sneaking out of their regular jobs on breaks and lunch to hit it. What would they do in an over the road truck, with no bosses and supervision around? All of them think they drive fine on it.

Have a question for you doctor. I cannot smoke cigarettes. I cannot Inhale Smoke into my lungs I have a very violent reaction. So I am not looking to smoke marijuana or vape it. But I am curious about Edibles for pain management. I have a CDL but I currently am not driving because of a knee injuries. I have been out of work for about a year. And in the state of New Mexico as of today you need a medical marijuana card to walk into a dispensary to purchase some edibles. In your opinion should I get the medical marijuana card or would that flag my license in the long run? And I do not plan on eating Edibles every day the rest of my life just when I'm really hurting probably a couple of times a month.

Getting the card would not flag your file. The issue would come when you went to take your physical or be drug tested. If you mark on you paperwork that you use marijuana in any form you would be automatically disqualified. Also if you are randomly drug tested and THC is found in your system you will lose your license and/or be required to have substance abuse education. Hope this helps!

These federal laws against marijuana needs to change since most of our country pay for fedreal taxes, plus its not wrong to intake it from home if others can drink alcohol..I feel that the feds need to give cmv drivers a break who been driving clean no accidents for my years, plus marijuana is not a harmful substance like cigarettes, and whats stupid that cbd is illlegal to rub on our backs but the feds can take our license away with these drug test having drivers losing their jobs for something beneficial, yet they want our money for buying marijuna product at a local store..I say let thc and cbd be off the grid so we can all work in peace

@@EasyDOTPhysicals your welcome I had been through this route testing dirty for thc, and I had a hard time looking for another job left dry being terminated for a one time use for back pain..if their is a way for the federal government can change their laws, that'll be great so many Americans can keep their license and career going due to necessary usage of marijuna at home basis. Absolutely, you can. Your worries are when you return to the pool and get the pre-employment drug screen. I have a "friend of a friend" who doesn't drive a CMV anymore but keeps his CDL active...his only requirement is that he keeps his CDL active by keeping his med cert current. You still get your DOT physical, without the drug screen while you're taking a year off. Get clean approx 6 weeks before your return and shave ALL of your body hair.

I know the dot cutt off is 50/ng on this test I came up at 41 but they did a conformation test at 15/ng which is why I think they said I was positive! Dot rule says as long as it’s below a 50 they have to report it as negative! Only when it comes back positive is when they do a conformation test! I’m trying to see if I should or would be safe to go ahead and take the dot test?

Im a mechanic for a small diesel repair shop i had to get cdl for test drives to duplicate issues and check repairs. So am i a driver or someone else? I would appreciate someone clearing this up for me

If you have a CDL the FMCSA considers you a driver just the same as someone driving an 18 wheeler. Hope this helps.

So what happens if you fail your Drug test first day of trucking school? They sent us to a DOT physical and the next day, they told me a came up for marijuana! I don’t use drugs?! They are required to retest your sample upon an initial failure. You're fortunate that they allowed you to provide another sample, but if they allowed it and it came back clean it sounds like you're good to go.

What are you hearing about cannabis use for cmv drivers when it becomes federally legal in all states? There has to be some changes made in testing, the ua system will not be a viable source, will the saliva test become the new test? How will this work for drivers?

@@EasyDOTPhysicals hair follicle testing is definitely more thorough, and is fine with me for testing against hard drugs. My main question is, will drivers be allowed to use cannabis if it becomes federally legal? Testing would have to change, would it be regulated with a saliva test like how alcohol is regulated with a breathalyzer. The blood, urine and hair follicle tests would be too thorough at that point. CBD and cannabis, if legalized on the federal level should then be available to use in our off time for those of us who don’t use alcohol. I was just asking if you’d heard anything on this hypothetical situation which will possibly happen in the near future.

If your athletic and healthy, then you're probably good. Just work out a lot and eat healthy. Drink water too
