Excellente vidéo les filles ! One thing I did when learning was speaking to myself throughout the day as I did random things around the house, at work, with my friends (basically just narrating my life like a crazy person! ). It works really well though - it gets your brain into "FRENCH MODE" and also helps building confidence. For those of you reading this who are scared to start speaking, what are you afraid of? Honestly, just speak to yourself to begin with. My students are currently building up their speaking level by "reading out loud". It's a great way to get started without having the massive pressure of getting things perfect! Hope this is helpful. Thanks, Rory.

Hi Christopher, also 55 years old here. Heading to France in May of next year. Just began one-on-one French lessons yesterday and my tutor recommended the girls on this channel (although I'd subscribed to them already). Here's to always learning more at any age. :)

Oh, that I had back in the day (when I was learning French and visited France and spoke with natives) some kind of magic facility whereby I could slow them down to the pace of this video. As a native English-speaker fluent in French, Spanish, Italian and German, the biggest trouble with French in the beginning was definitely speed + the fact so many words on the page aren’t pronounced. It took me a while to marry the written word with the spoken word. With Spanish, Italian and German it’s, more or less, say what you see so when you hear these languages spoken even at their normal conversational speed it’s not nearly as difficult to understand them as it is to understand spoken French at normal conversational speed as a beginner. In other words, what made me most nervous was just getting completely swamped by the seeming tsunami of French coming at me at 100mph! Persevere though. There _is_ a kind of imperceptible tipping point where one day you realise you are going about your daily business in France and understanding everything and not just the odd word here or there! 👍 (Edit: One other thing: don’t worry about trying to perfect an accent. Think about this: most foreigners who speak your native language speak with their own accent. Moreover, I personally find it _way_ more attractive hearing a foreigner speaking my native language perfectly with their _own_ accent!)

Language insecurity is interesting. I went to Paris last year and practiced French with some natives. It was a fantastic experience. They were so helpful and appreciative of the fact I was trying based on what I learned via Duolingo. At the same time, I sometimes feel like an imposter trying to understand and speak, even when I’m doing exercises alone. Thank you, Hélène and Judith, for the advice and reassurance. I enjoy your videos, especially the man-on-the-street interviews (even though the interviewees speak faster). 😄

When I went to France last summer, some people understood me without any problem, while others did not even understand me while using sentences I learned in school. Could it be because some have little to no experience with people who are not francophone? Je sais que mon Français n'est pas au niveau, mais j'ai le impression que il y a aussi de person qui ne sont pas fair.

There is a stereotype that the French are elitist about their language and get snobbish when people make mistakes. That's not true at all! In reality, the French love it when a foreigner speaks their language, even if you make mistakes. The language is a vital tool in any Francophone country.

1:06 That guy in the back is super nosy 😅 Also, I think people overthink it. I’m not a confident person or super outgoing but I will practice my French with French speakers. I don’t care if I sound “bad”. If French people correct me I’m thankful. I don’t go crying and feeling bad about myself. Like I said, I don’t have a lot of confidence, but I still don’t let that hold me back. The French person I know doesn’t pronounce everything perfectly in English, but he’s really cute so it’s ok. I know people who don’t like to speak English because they’re embarrassed that they have an accent. It doesn’t matter.

I will never succeed in speaking French. It is too late, despite visiting the country since 1999 and my wife being French. I understand a lot of what is being said but have no ability to converse in French because it is too complicated. People speak too fast and eat their words. We speak English which is where it went wrong and now there is no point spending hours on learning a language aged 54 when my life expectancy is probably not much more than another twenty five years if I am lucky. Life is too short to put time into something that does not bear results. It is one of my biggest regrets because I would have been proud to speak French in order to access the culture properly.
@titteryenot4524Ай бұрын
Surely the obvious route for you, dude, is just get your wifey to only speak to you in French and you must reply in French, no? You would be talking the language in a year! 👍

My neighbour started Spanish at age 47. From nothing and no prior experience. No Spanish husband to help her along. After 3-4 years she's upper intermediate. Lets say she has 20-25 years more to live, some of that will be speaking Spanish. The best time to start is always today.

It's never too late brother. You've made a start after many years. A baby doesn't learn it's mother's tongue in a year, it starts with basic words and over time. It's vocabulary adds up. You just need to keep repeating these words in common day life, and you will start thinking in french, not English. Have courage brother, do not fear, and do not doubt. In jesus name! Amen.
