I think lunch is the best translation since it's the middle meal, and usually eaten in the afternoon. Translating it to "dinner" is confusing for English speakers because it's much earlier than English dinner and it's not the final meal of the day.

It might be because a lot of the UK say dinner is the middle of the day meal. There is history for this as Dinner was the biggest meal of the day traditionally and in London or the south, dinner was after coming home from the factory in the evening. Not even English natives agree when dinner is 😂

I always tell people that obiad is “supper”, because this word in English essentially means “main meal of the day”, and was normally eaten in the middle of the day (and still is for some speakers). And there’s a delightful archaic verb to match; to sup.

It's the other way round: "supper" is "kolacja", and "dinner" is the main meal of the day, regardless of when it's eaten.

This is backwards. Dinner is the biggest meal of the day no matter what time of day it happens. Supper is always in the evening. The word supper comes from the Old French word souper which means evening meal. Dinner is heavy, supper is light. Dinner is more formal, supper is informal.
