I keep seeing training for doing your own Arc Flash study. Is this not an engineering function? I have heard that only licensed PE's are to do these studies. In fact some states do consider this an engineering function and would consider this illegal. KInd of like someone practicing Dentistry without a medical license. Your thoughts?

Mike, You have brought up an interesting topic. IEEE does not require licensed PE to conduct an arc flash study on existing structures. They stipulate the need for 'previous experience on like systems'. So to follow your analogy, it is more akin to a dental tech performing cleaning and polishing on my teeth since the building design has been previously approved. Where as the initial arc flash analysis and device coordination on a new design would more clearly fall into the realm of 'engineering function' On the other hand if local regulations require a PE stamp, then that is that. Well, if an error is made it would be a holiday for a wrongful death or injury attorney. I'm sure it would be brought up and anyone available to be sued would be sued.

That's what is available through our university program, but you need to be a student at one of the schools that has set up the university program. There is also a free demo version of the software you can get from the EasyPower website.
