Honey and yogurt are two incredibly healthy foods that offer different health benefits when consumed. Both provide different health promoting abilities, and when combined together, become an immunity and digestive boosting powerhouse. When choosing yogurt, try to consume plain, unsweetened yogurt if possible to keep down calories and sugar. Greek yogurt would also be a great choice. As for honey, raw organic varieties are best as this has the highest antioxidant concentrations. Now, lets discuss some of the incredible health benefits of consuming honey and yogurt consistently.
1. First, raw honey and yogurt are a nutrient and antioxidant powerhouse. This mixture provides many different types of vitamin, minerals and antioxidants that can promote our overall health. Raw honey is incredibly rich in high quality and potent antioxidants. These include organic acids, flavonoids and phenols. As well, honey contains bioactive plant compounds and trace amounts of vital nutrients. Yogurt is incredibly nutrient dense and rich in vital nutrients. It contains high levels of calcium, vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium and riboflavin, along with probiotic compounds.
2. This mixture can also promote the health of our heart many different ways. As mentioned previously, honey is loaded with antioxidant compounds that can help to lower both blood pressure and the risks associated with heart disease. It can also help to improve cholesterol levels in the body by lowering total and LDL cholesterol, while significantly raising “good” HDL cholesterol. If that wasn’t enough, honey can also help to lower blood triglyceride concentrations, a major risk factor for heart disease. Yogurt is also heart healthy. It can help reduce high blood pressure since it is a good source of potassium and other nutrients. As well, yogurt can help to reduce bad cholesterol in the body due to the live probiotics it contains, reducing the risk of coronary heart disease.
3. Eating honey and yogurt can also help promote healthy digestion. Honey has tremendous anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties. These important properties can help to treat gastrointestinal disorders, such as ulcers, as research has indicated. This can help promote and improve overall digestive function and increase nutrient uptake. Yogurt is incredibly important for healthy digestion as well. Healthy bacteria that are often found in yogurt work to improve the microflora found in the gut. This works to not only improve digestion overall, but also promotes a healthy digestive tract. Also, these active cultures found in yogurt can help relieve certain gastrointestinal ailments, including constipation, diarrhea and irritable bowel syndrome.
4. Consuming this mixture regularly can also help reduce the risks associated with diabetes. Evidence has found that honey may help reduce some of the risks factors that are commonly associated with diabetics. This includes lowering “bad” LDL cholesterol, inflammation and triglycerides. Also, raw honey will not increase blood sugar levels as much as sugar will. Just be sure to consume honey in moderation, as some increase will occur if over-consumed. Yogurt has been found in some studies to specifically lower the risk of Type 2 diabetes. Since yogurt supports healthy digestion and the absorption of vital nutrients throughout the digestive tract, this can help promote healthy blood sugar regulation.
5. Lastly, consuming honey and yogurt consistently can help to boost the immune system. As mentioned, honey is packed with healthy antioxidant compounds and nutrients that work to reduce inflammation throughout the body and reduce oxidative stress. These bioactive compounds and antioxidants work to boost our overall immunity, and may even help to reduce the risk of certain diseases. Yogurt which contains probiotics is a well known immune system booster. Research has found that the probiotics in yogurt can help to improve the immune system specifically. The probiotics found in yogurt helped to keep the digestive tract and gut free from bacteria that could lead to certain diseases.
When consuming in this mixture, be sure t consume in moderation as a little bit of each goes a long way in promoting our overall health. Again, be sure to consume yogurt with probiotics and that is low in sugar. Raw, organic honey is also best.
