“Throughout the years, Stay Tuned has been known to sing quite a few Hozier songs, and for good reason. Hozier is notorious for writing intricate and meaningful lyrics, which our group really resonates with. The song Eat Your Young is no exception. In August of 2023, The album Unreal Unearth was released, topping the charts all across the globe. The album was based on the 2010 animated epic Dante's Inferno. This animated dark fantasy film takes us through the nine circles of hell, while the main character, Dante, battles demons, monsters, creatures, and finally, Lucifer. Hozier connected this gruesome story to the 2020 pandemic to create Unreal Unearth. Eat Your Young is meant to represent the 3rd Circle of Hell: Gluttony. It has been rumored that the title of this song eludes to the 1729 satirical essay, A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift. This poem suggests that a solution for poverty in Ireland would be for poor families to sell their children, to be cannibalized by the rich. To tie that back to our modern society, this song speaks on the fact that we all take the luxuries in our lives for granted, and we indulge in those luxuries without realizing the consequences they could have for future members of our society. Humans started to develop patterns of destructive consumerism back in 1760 when the Industrial Revolution began. Back then, there was little to no concern about what would happen in 2023. In today’s society, we are starting to see big changes in the world around us such as global warming, overpopulation which leads to starvation, natural disasters, melting ice caps, air pollution and so much more. While you listen to our performance tonight, we urge you to take this time to reflect. What are some things that we as a society can change to change the trajectory that our world is currently on? Is the damage to our earth irreversible, or is there still time for us to recover?” - Giovanna Sudol
