This week on Dining on a Dime: Hawaii, host Lucas Peterson continues his exploration of Oahu’s culinary scene with dollar beers and a veritable feast of Japanese street food all under the same roof. The Shirokiya Japan Village Walk in the Ala Moana Shopping Center in Honolulu is the sprawling home to nearly three dozen food and drink vendors, offering everything from umeboshi onigiri to Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki.
Eater is the one-stop-shop for food and restaurant obsessives across the country. With features, explainers, animations, recipes, and more - it’s the most indulgent food content around. So get hungry.

Lucas, You said you wished you did something useful. I think you can guide people to the foods and chefs that respect the land and our natural resources. That can definitely be a challenge but encouraging a culture of agricultural and culinary stewardship is, and will continue to be, an absolutely essential part of preserving our planet for the future. As a local example: the non-profit "Surfrider Foundation" certifies restaurants on Oahu that they deem "ocean friendly." No affiliation with them, just really respect the work that they do for our community. "Dining On a Dime" isn't exactly a perfect match in terms of mission or purpose, but you guys have the skills, charisma, and platform. Thanks for keeping local businesses alive! And for the onigiri! Beers on me next time. Aloha, Dylan

mad respect for your research - I grew up eating spam, and we always had this and a lot of other canned goods in our cupboards because we always felt the need to be ready for emergencies (war, hurricane, tsunami, etc.).... at pretty much any meal in Hawai'i, you might have three, four or more ethnic backgrounds represented - filipino, hawaiian, japanese, chinese, and portuguese were the first immigrants, now there's korean, vietnamese, thai and others influencing the food culture here...

The Shirokiya village has a nice atmosphere and they put on shows which are pretty cool but it’s in Ala Moana which is touristy as hell meaning the food is overpriced, although not horribly (expect to spend about $15 minimum per person). The best value at Shirokiya by far is the beer garden, so I’m surprised he didnt mention it. Talking about $1 beers, and it’s a decent sized plastic cups worth too.

My local tradition which i grown up with, is that, when you are eating noodle, you should not, in any case, bite the noodle and snap the string of those noodles. You were supposed to slurp it until the end of those noodle strings. Something about local beliefs of 'cutting your own luck'. So it is a bit painful for me to watch this when Lucas was eating the okonomiyaki xD
