I did enjoy witnessing your annoyance on the issues documented in this video with humor & delight. It is what makes your reviews unique & "YOU"! Being "miffed" by the bread charge & lack of "foot" as visually represented is SO WONDERFULLY YOU! (and yes, I understand & don't fault you at all) Again, I write this with deep respect for an individual I have now got to know & enjoy through these video offerings! They do offer 904 ft.² in this luxury building for 5400 per month which is below the city average and they even have studios for $3900 per month. I believe that is a very good deal for this building and location.

@whyitmatterstomeАй бұрын
Again, nice video James. I will say this, it seems there are some commenters who don't get the foot complaint. They think because you got something for free, it all evened out in the end. I respect your honest opinion BECAUSE you didn't pander after they gave you a free dish. I think your issue is that not everyone received a free dish, had to pay for bread that is usually free, and the portion size and construction of the dish was misrepresented on Instagram. The chicken is also a 'signature' dish, and the foot is part of the plating which not only adds visual appeal but is delicious. This meal was $72 dollars not counting the drink, still not cheap. So, I'm not sure why people aren't comprehending your mild complaints here. Quick math for the regular menu not counting the octopus dish: chicken, $46 with foot and much larger portion; beef carpaccio, also likely a larger portion, $26; ice cream and churros, $16; and finally the damn bread, FREE. Had you ordered on the regular menu, the meal would have been $88 - the 'restaurant week' menu saved you of a whooping $16 bucks in the end.
@JamesnuАй бұрын
Thank you! Well said, I appreciate it! Yeah, those are definitely my issues. I can't give a place a pass just if they generously give me an extra course, which I was definitely grateful for. I'm thinking about how the average diners are treated overall. Still, I really liked Crown Shy and my only issues were with how the Restaurant Week menu was handled.

@shadowfilm7980Ай бұрын
Always. They have to figure it out to still make a profit. All about the bottom line.
@alisachamoy225Ай бұрын
@@shadowfilm7980 Definitely. Smaller menu selection, smaller portions and then a dessert no one really wants. (And the quality of the food is usually lower because they are using cheaper ingredients with the increased volume of customers). I always find you have to look at the menu's normal prices first (ahead of time) to figure out if there's even any cost savings (most of the time it's maybe a dollar or so, if that). The only good thing is less food waste which is better for sustainability overall.

Since the photo was taken prior to restaurant week that would explain why the photo represented their regular menu. To get chicken with the feet still on the restaurant would have likely had to order directly from the farm - a great expense. Also the majority of western diners would be turned off by the chicken foot. We have chicken feet in Korean cuisine, but I know a lot of people who are not down with eating them. Making a whole gourmet loaf of bread is not only costly, but time consuming. To be fair the restaurant has to make cutbacks to justify the $60 price tag. 1) Many of the diners are not regular patrons. In Toronto's restaurant week the majority of patrons are not regular diners, many do not tip well, or know standard restaurant etiquette. 2) The restaurant has to prepare to flip fewer tables with the 3 course menu and some diners who might lag on their tables. At the end of the day they gave you a free squid dish which was worth more than the cost of the bread and chicken foot. I know you are a very respectful and generous tipping restaurant patron and I am not trying to be confrontation, but I'm sorry I have empathy for the restaurant on this one. I worked in the industry for many years and know a restaurant's struggle to survive is very real.
@JamesnuАй бұрын
I understand your perspective, but the fact is the restaurant could've just not posted the picture of the chicken and instead used photos of the other courses that weren't altered.

That's a garbage restaurant that does stuff like that. Anyway, when I was younger (probably about your age) I used to do what you do -- hit all of the hot spots looking for the "best" meals in the city (my city was Philly, though). After a while I realized that most of those places were plastic and artificial and the food was, in the end, just that. Some of it was better than others but, still. Eventually I realized that when it comes to dining out, even (or especially) for fine dining, there's a bar they have to meet but it's lower than you probably think. Beyond that, what makes an evening out at a restaurant is the people you go with. I'm guessing one of your favorite meals was the one you went to with your father and there's a reason for that. Sure, the food looked great. But it was having your dad with you that made it special. Now when I go out I'm simply looking for a place that won't screw it up and that will allow me to enjoy my evening with my family or friends. Restaurants screw that part up all the time. Most of the fine dining places are the worst offenders, IMO. Which is why I now steer clear of all the places I couldn't get enough of back in the day.

Indeed! The company one's surrounded with really can be the most important factor of a meal. Yep, that dinner I shared with my dad the other week was one of the best meals I've ever had!

All the free advertising you gave them. You’d think they could’ve wrote off a $12 loaf of bread…

It's alright. I don't need any special treatment. It was definitely nice to get that octopus course, but I always judge a place more so with how they treat everyone.

James, first, love your content...thanks. Dude, the foot though? What value do you think they get from removing the foot? So they take it off your plate, for restaurant week, and then what? What do they do with it? It's far more likely that not every chicken's foot is presentable and as it's not a crucial element to the eating experience, they leave it off. With the bread, totally get your point, but it is priced on the menu and it's fair that they charge for otherwise "free" things when they expect to clear far less on the table. I think it's more egregious to charge $12 for it rather than the charge at all. Great content and thanks again!
@JamesnuАй бұрын
Thank you! It wasn't just that they took off the foot, but they drastically reduced the portion size and made a misleading post about it on Instagram. If they hadn't made that post, I wouldn't have been too upset since any Restaurant Week menu is always sort of a gamble with what the restaurant will present.
@NooNaN926Ай бұрын
@@Jamesnu ah, understood. They had looked similar in the video, so must have missed your noting the overall portion being smaller. This can forever be, "the chicken foot" episode. 😀

With the sudden passing the chef Kent, the whole group can still keep running of 2 restaurants and 1 bar, specially the group’ upcoming restaurant: time and tide, plz understand there a lot bigger aspects for the group to worry abt; i don’t think the restaurant had any time or special budget to take a specific picture only for the restaurant week menu; it’s not like the missing foot chicken dish changed its flavor; im sure u can have some level of compassion! Complaining publicly on YT when the menu clearly says $12 bread as $60 for 3 courses it’s already a steal! And u can have as many pull-apart breads as ur belly desires and chicken dish with a foot, when it’s not restaurant week, I can guarantee u that! ❤
@JamesnuАй бұрын
Indeed! The restaurant and hospitality group have certainly been going through a tough time. Chef Kent was a major loss to NYC. If I'm doing a review however, I have to point out these issues. You're right, I'm sure they didn't have a good photo of the Restaurant Week chicken. The solution is simple. They shouldn't have posted the photo of the chicken and instead showcased the courses that were not altered, which were fantastic. As far as the bread. It just doesn't sit too well with me that a person could probably get a single course off the a la carte menu, pay less than the Restaurant Week price and still get bread. Like I said in the video, Crown Shy is a great restaurant, but their Restaurant Week menu wasn't the best.

@@jrcasa7926 I was very grateful for the dish! It was excellent! But I'm doing a review for everyone, and the average customer is not getting a free course.

You got a free octopus dish but lost a foot on the chicken and were charged $12 for bread that is normally free. Bottom line everything more or less balanced out.

That's true and I was very grateful for that octopus, but I'm also thinking of the average diner and they most likely won't get a free course.

Great review but a remark/observation: why are they putting the pasta "mafaldine" as the first word in the dish description? Normally it should be: Calabrian salami, sungold, mafaldine". Is it because they are assuming people dont know that mafaldine is a pasta and they are trying to be smart?
