I really love this channel! (And I never comment on videos ever) But was excited you made a video about America. Usually you seem very thorough in understanding different cultures so it would have been nice if you talked to an American about this. Actually the average consumer at Costco is a 39 year old Asian woman with $125000 USD yearly salary. Not your average obese American. Obese Americans tend to not have access to fresh groceries, in what we call Food Deserts because of socio-economic-political reasons. This is a much more complex issue than just Americans wanting to eat unhealthily and not being able to control their diet.
@Plaguerizm2 жыл бұрын
Completely agree with this. I love your channel, but this video was really disappointing. I enjoy that you take the time to visit different parts of China and introduce the nuances of regional cuisines and cultures. Yet, here we're told there is a "standard American diet", and of course, it's the stereotypical super-sized junk food diet. I'm 1st generation Chinese American, and I frequently bounce between the US and China. Chinese grocery stores are also filled with processed junk food, this is very universal problem in this day and age. Much of the problem is socio-economic, as Hipposter mentions above. Regardless, there is no "standard" American diet or American person, just like there is no "standard" Chinese diet or Chinese person. Afu, I commend you for all of the educational content around diet and exercise, but I feel like you really missed the mark with this video.

I agree with you for the most part except for the part where you mentioned "39-year-old Asian woman" as if they were not Americans. That calls for you to be careful with what you say on a public platform and try to avoid unconsciously making discriminative comments.

Sam's club looks exactly same as Costco. I think you are talking about the poor Americans who eat junk all the time. If you go to the rich neighborhood, no one eats like that.
@ZenovaXD2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, most upper-middle class Americans tend to flock to organic and more natural sources of food instead of processed food because they can afford it most of the time (at least in my area). Most Americans have to resort to processed foods because it's obviously cheaper to maintain foods with preservatives and what not, but then it's also because most of this food is ready to eat straight out of the box. People tend to have 30+ min commutes to work, so driving and eating instead of waiting to get home is more optimised than potentially using up 30 minutes of your free time after work. It's pretty saddening.
@douglaswatkins62812 жыл бұрын
@@ZenovaXD Most poor people eat terribly in America because they are lazy and cheap processed food is very satisfying. Also the increase in obesity makes a person think their obesity is normal because so many people around them are fat too.

Food access is a big contributor to the US obesity pandemic. In China, access to fresh fairly cheap food at small restaurants and street vendors is common. In the US, the quick cheap food is fast food and gas stations. Also, most people in the US drive everywhere instead of walking.
The sizes are pretty big, but this is not all Americans eating daily. I really like your video as you provide a unique view as a foreigner living in Shanghai, but now I really question your intention to do a video like this to please the Chinese internet population.
the daily calorie intake in 1961 was literally 800 cal above the number of calories a person uses up in a day. and then Americans decided it wasn't enough and added an extra 800 cals. great dedication to this video, loved it
I usually enjoy your content because you are very respectful and positive about the food and home culture it comes from. I found this video to be tasteless and quite offensive. First, not all Americans eat like this and it was very crass of you to assume that they all do. Second of all, you lacked research into why some people eat like this. It's not because it's a choice it's because of poverty and lack of choices in the U.S, especially in certain parts of the country. Third, you talk like you're a health expert when just 1-2 years ago you were overweight yourself. Were those choices you were making for yourself also because of conscious unwise decisions that need to be brought down by negativity or were you just experiencing a lack of choices around you?

I agree with you, I never comment on any video and always have a positive mindset for online creators, but this is just ignorant. I’m a chef, married to an American and before Covid, we had lived in China for 8 years. It’s true, Most Americans have access to all the indulgent foods whether it be junk food or expensive delicacies. Unfortunately this video just buys into the Chinese’s stereotype of Americans, a very uneducated and belligerent mindset.

I’m surprised that a formerly obese person would include this kind of non-consensual footage of obese people. I know they do it on TV but I think it’s unethical. These are real individuals with feelings and a right to dignity. You may say you included your former self too, but that’s your choice and you earn money that way. I’m sure you don’t mean to hurt anyone, but this ain’t right. Besides, as many pointed out, this is a complex problem and many Americans don’t have the opportunity to be healthy.

Hallo Thomas, I watch your videos from time to time and enjoy them. Having lived in Germany for over a decade and being married to a German I can relate to your approaches and see that peculiar sense of humor sometimes :),, on this video however, there is too much generalization & stereotyping of entire population. America has people from different backgrounds whose culinary heritage is also diverse which I enjoy so much. You can have Mexican food for breakfast, Italian pasta for lunch and say like Japanese for dinner. It is a fact that there are so many people who are overweight and so many deal with consequences stemming from overweight. I personally don’t buy any from your shopping cart and neither do the ones I know around me. Overweight issue is not one dimensional solely blaming 3 ingredients. Compared to your other videos, this one felt a little flat. Please keep up with your varied subjects 👍 , now I even turned my stubborn German husband to watch your videos sometimes :) Greetings from Virginia
Why don't you talk about diet and lifestyle of a common German? I'm sure everyone is curious as to what a typical European/German eats and does to keep fit. Thanks Thomas.

you're right about how many steps we have every day. The main reason is that we have cars to drive everywhere. Each day to have 3000 to 5000 steps is already very good. Also, we eat in the car mainly because of being stuck in the traffic. Drive-thru and having a quick bit is good enough for us.

It's not the number so much that counts, but the quality of those years. If I live to 60 or 70, I want those years to be the best they can be - same as if I live to 100 or more! The reason to eat healthily and exercise isn't so much about weight or body image or whatever else, but it's about what makes you feel your best and happiest. The standard American diet is a recipe for systemic inflammation in the body that does you no good whatsoever. But I also agree - everything in moderation! And of course we don't want to be unhealthy, but there's issues with price, access, convenience, and culture that have intertwined and managed to make obesity an epidemic here.
I have serious issue with the content of your video this time. This is seriously one of your worst video to date. LIke seriously, where do you find some of the "American facts" that you keep referring to?
You are always welcome to visit the San Francisco Bay Area, where almost everyone is on a diet and into fitness. We can show you around the new version of SAD diet.
