I think this is why the population of obese people cannot lose weight, they go on diets thinking that these options will help, but the artificial sweeteners, alien ingredients and the lack of fat make the body hungrier as it's foreign to it. So, like you said, wholefoods like what our grandparents were brought up on are so much better for us, nutritionally, alot healthier and keeps us sustained for a reasonable time. Well done Grackle, love you girlie xxxxx😘
@samuelm2989
@samuelm2989 4 жыл бұрын
Also when you go on a diet you're just up for failure. Science has proven time and time again that diets dont work and that you should eat a variety of food to feel happy and satisfied and also stay at a healthy weight. But you're absolutely right, like diet coke makes you GAIN weight and the more you drink it the more you gain. So people are fooled to believe that they're making a good choice when they switch up soda to a diet one (when in reality they should drink water)
@therootb
@therootb 4 жыл бұрын
@@samuelm2989 I'm sorry but I have to correct you. (1) diets do work. Not all diets are equal in their efficacy. The word "diet" in the sense that you are eating in caloric deficit, is a valid way to stay healthy or become a healthier weight. (2) drinking Diet Coke does not actually make you gain weight. At least not directly. There are studies showing that it maintains or heightens your body's desire/craving for sweet tasting things, which means you're more likely to eat sweet things, which means you're more likely to gain weight... but by itself, drinking Diet soda DOES NOT make you gain weight. Please try to avoid stating falsities in a matter-of-fact way.

Absolutely agree. I eat whole fat raw milk, eggs and butter etc, a strong believer of wholefoods. However 3 major differences between our generation and that of our grandparents is that their portion sizes were smaller, they didn't have the range of snacks we have now and their life was more mobile. Everything in moderation, that's the key, unless theirs special circumstances. That's my moto in life. If we adhere to that then 'dieting' is unnecessary.

Hummus is loaded with oil and tahini so a reduced fat option is probably just using less oil and tahini and more chickpeas. And with cereal, they also use refined oil to make the flavouring stick to the cereal. So they probably just use less of oil and more sugar syrup to make it stick. You are right about the substitutions....they usually ad more of sth else if they reduce fat. it's best to just make stuff from scratch if you're really tring to be healthy. But if you wanna processed snack than I'd say just go for the normal version. If it's not every day it's not going to have a massive effect on your health (hopefully).

Your mum is SO right about not buying diet foods. It’s true that what they lack in fat, calories etc they have in sweeteners and other bad ingredients. I had to snort at the ketchup label. No sugar my ass! What do they think sucralose is? And the cookies have maltitol and palm oil. Sweeteners are no better than sugar - they still have an insulogenic effect. Diet products are the biggest scam ever. I’m so angry at the food industry - diet foods have contributed to the rise of eating disorders. Most people with binge eating disorder, bulimia, etc, developed their disorders after following a weight loss diet, and many of them ate these products during their diets. These foods are NOT satiating (Grace ate more snacks than meals) and if anything, they make you crave more food. It’s really restricting. No wonder after some time eating like this the bubble bursts and people end up bingeing on anything and everything. Cue in the shame and the restricting, and the cycle begins. This is exactly how my BED started. I recommend the book The Big Fat Surprise by Nina Teicholz. Eat real fat! Butter substitutes are poison. Margarine is made with vegetable oil and it’s terrible for you. I remember when I stopped buying low-fat yogurt and started buying full-fat yogurt. I went straight to the fattiest yogurt - Greek yogurt. It was GLORIOUS! It’s like I had been eating water the whole time and for the first time in forever I was eating real food. For a decadent dessert, I don’t eat ice cream, I have natural, full-fat Greek yogurt with raw cacao powder, matcha powder or nuts. Seriously, don’t do diet foods!

@@donnashields1194 She was indeed! All these diet, fat-free products are relatively new in the food industry. They have only been around for a few decades. In the '50s people ate full-fat dairy, refined white bread, rice, potatoes, etc and yet look at pictures of people back then (or from the '60s and '70s) and compare them to pictures of people now. Back then most people were at a healthy weight and now obesity is rampant. Shouldn't these diet products have helped beat obesity? How come things aren't getting better? It doesn't add up... Also, in the '50s most people ate three square meals a day (snack foods were almost non-existant) and now we have been hoodwinked into believing that we need to eat 5-6 times a day or else we'll die from hypoglycemia.

@@Sylphadora Yes, that is so true that people used to be thinner years ago. The science concerning what to eat and what not to eat is always changing, it's no wonder that people are confused! I've been overweight almost all my life and think I finally found a way to eat that is sustainable long term. I have cut down significantly on simple carbs and processed foods while still eating fats, protein and low carb fruit and veg. My husband has lost 40 lbs and I have lost 30. I still have a way to go but think it will eventually come off. I have just made chicken in a cream wine sauce to have for dinner later tonight over zucchini. Smells amazing! We eat balanced diets. We are healthy. Yet my mother and sister (and her family) are still on the “diet” carousel. This was so interesting to watch! The one thing I will say is that as a diabetic, artificial sweeteners are much easier on my body than real sugar, which is one of the appeals of eating artificially sweetened things. For most people, I agree that sweetened with sugar or otherwise, it doesn’t really make a difference, but just thought I’d throw my two cents out there!

I don’t know if you’ve done this before but if you haven’t, you should do a week of value brand. So like Sainsbury’s basics or Asda smart price and compare nutritional value and taste to the branded equivalent. Also I’d be really interested in the research and investigation that you do on the topic of the video.

As someone who has always been on the bigger side, with a slower metabolism along with the rest of my family, i find it so interesting to see someone react like this. My mum has always been dieting, I’ve been in and out of diet fads from such a young age that I would never consider burying full fat coke etc in the shop and standing comparing nutritional info on boxes is just part of an average shopping trip. I instinctively grab the “low fat” option and the thinnest, smallest breads and reduced sugar products. I can truthfully say it’s eye opening to realise that isn’t a part of everyone’s up bringing. Great video! It’s interesting to see someone who has such a different experience!

Love the videos. Your momma did a good job in teaching you about food :) In order to reduce the fat the water content is increased, sugar is increased and/or they'll use a leaner cut of meat. To reduce sugar they usually just swap out to sweeteners or use actual fruit rather than concentrate. To reduce calories they'll reduce the good stuff (fat, carbs & sugar), reduce the size, increase the water content and/or increase the air used to produce the product I.e. Ice cream.

As someone who has a history of disorderd eating (I'm fully recovered now) I actually found this video quite helpful. Because it rationalised how much these diet foods really are set up to draw people in when in reality it's often better to just eat a whole foods diet.

Love the video, and it really highlights the importance of comparing 100 grams of the different varieties up against each other to see if there is an actual difference or not. Also loved the videos in the description😄 just one thing: you keep saying that there is a lot of misleading information out there - which of course is very true - but artificial sweeteners is also a topic which is worth debating, and really doesn't need to be worse for you than actual sugar.
