One thing you have to consider when comparing prices is that portion sizes have doubled to tripled since those old times. Even watch some old movies and you'll see that many people would have just a slice of toast or one egg for breakfast. Kids and adults ususally ate about the same amount, but nowadays we have kids meals because portion sizes for adults got so large.

Cool concept, but I dont know why you guys are saying places aren't worth it at 25 or 40$ for entrees. That pretty much every sit-down restaurant in lower Manhattan that isn't Chinese or ramen. I doubt any of the places that are more than 100 years old are serving anything from menus back then. I doubt burgers from 1880s had tomato, lettuce or potato buns.

Should've got the oysters at PJ Clarke's, in fact oysters were extremely popular in the 19th century in America and England. So they would've likely had that. The "1884 Burger" would've been likely served at a roadside cart instead, the cheese not being introduced for another 40 or so odd years. It would also never be that pink and likely be more of a smashed style. Probably much smaller, too, with the only condiments likely just being grilled onions.

I've always had this though to myself that the first company/restaurant to do something really well and get that proof of concept of their unique product will always eventually fall off because competitors see their success and innovate on top of that product to make it better. It happens with everything whether its food, technology, stationary goods. Some examples i can think off of the top of my head would be like the Hydroflask water bottle. When it entered the market, consumers had a craze for it because of its new innovative vacuum temperature seal bottle. But fast forward only a couple of years, companies like Stanley, Takeya and Owala have innovated the bottle and are much better than the standard Hydroflask. Another example of this would be like boba shops. I remember a time where Quicklys boba and Tapioca Express (this is california btw) used to rule the boba market. But in less than a decade, many other boba shops have come up and it is hard to go back to the old places. These places survive mostly on nostalgia and novelty. For anyone who bothered to read this, let me know what you think or if you have other examples of products that were once king of the market and fell off due to lack of innovating to keep up with the competition :)
