As someone who has eaten hundreds of MRE's in the Army. I recommend you just carry a rag with you to wipe off the chemical from the outside of the pouches when you cook them. There is a reason they have warnings about that heater on the bag and why some of my buddies turned their heaters into mini bombs for fun. I'd also recommend any MRE that has the words "Macaroni" or "Mac" as the food as they are the most sought after ones in the military. My personal favorites being "Chili Mac" , "Beef Stew" and "Chili with Beans". But for all that is holy, stay away from the dreaded "Breakfast Omelet" MRE...

You should try some of the foreign MREs. There are some wild ones out there. The Russian stuff is good and the European ones are good too. The British MRE are pretty much like ours so not much difference, but the Russian and European ones can be leagues better than stuff I have had in US MRE. Even though I do enjoy the US MRE too.

That and the US First Strike MREs are a pretty good deal when you can find the cases. They have 9 to a case, and each one pack is a 24 hour ration pack with basically 3 regular MRE condensed into one.
