This is NOT an informative video about being a vegan, simply an experiment to try new things for a week and see what a vegan diet (diet only) is all about. I'm not a healthy eater, I usually live off fast food so my vegan choices aren't the healthiest either. I also can't cook to save my life, but this will be very apparent in the video 🙊
I'm very aware that being a Vegan is a lifestyle not just the diet.

I don't usually comment. Whilst I understand and agree that choosing to be a vegan is often a pro animal rights decision, I also understand that a lot of decision and lifestyle choices that go against the social norm or what we are used to is a challenge. I stopped eating meat, which I love, because I do not agree and could no longer stomach eating animals which had been tortured. I also believe that Emma and Simon are pro animal rights and do not agree with the torture of animals either. I think it is commendable that Emma stepped outside of her comfort zone to try something new and alien to her. And whether intentional or not she is using her platform to raise awareness of veganism. This in itself is political. Great vlog guys!!

Really impressed to see meat-eaters do a straight hop to veganism for a week! Just some advice if you ever want to do this again, or more often, if you want to have more variation I would advise cooking more stuff from fresh as there is a surprising amount of interesting and filling meals you can make. Although the vegan protein substitutes are great, they can get boring pretty quick which is something I discovered. Easiest way to do it is to search for recipes that appeal to you before you go to the supermarket so you can get everything you need - much harder to do a spontaneous shop when you're vegan!

So we've gathered haha. Thank you for the tips, we are going to to carry on trying vegan recipes, but we're just not being strict as we have food in the cupboards left over from Christmas that needs to be eaten or it will go to waste. Planning clearly is key which is tricky for us as we lead such busy lives that often quick convenience is a must for us. Having said that I'm sure there is an adjustment period to get used to fitting this in with each individuals lifestyle ♥️

I love that you gave it a try and kept it to foods that you enjoy usually rather than trying to going ham and going over your head complicated because its a huuuuge change. I can tell you it took me a year to really get comfortable cooking vegan. It takes alot of experimenting and you definitey have to WANT to do it..lol but love your efforts and kudos to you both!!

I have been eating plant based for years. I don't call myself vegan because i love my bags and cashmere. I think we all have to find a balance of what works best for us. Having the experience and discovering that vegan food isn't as bad as most people expect it to be is a great start. Even if you make no changes to your diet at least you will have a better understanding of plant based eating and people.

I couldn't agree more, it was such a learning experience for me and a real eye opener as someone that was pretty stubborn with food. I agree with some of the comments with people saying these 'labels' don't help and we feel pressure to fit into one category, when it's not that simple. You have to do what works for you ♥️

Former vegan here! I looked up Belbake plain flour, and found it on Lidl's list of vegan-friendly products. What I don't know is what else is in it besides wheat flour (I'm Canadian so it's not a familiar product here), but plain flour is vegan. What I also know is that many of these lists (vegan-friendly, kosher, etc) are compiled by consumers who write in to corporate, so they should always be cross-referenced with the actual product itself. No one curates these lists so there could be errors. I totally wish someone could have cooked for you! I make a mean lentil shepherd's pie (and not ironically)! I love that you guys were honest about your experience - it's not easy and takes a lot of shuffling through the crap to get to the good stuff!

With the Chinese restaurant experience, as a vegan I like to look up the restaurants menu before hand and if nothing seems vegan friendly i’ll eat a bit before I go. You can also always ask them to modify things on the menu like ask for vegetable fried rice without egg and the only thing to be really iffy of at a Chinese restaurant is oyster sauce so I just ask for them to not put it on anything. After 4 years of living this way it gets really easy and the world is becoming more and more vegan friendly too which is great for me!

I'm doing veganuary (the whole month of January) and I love it. The key thing is to be prepared in advance and do a meal plan. Me and my daughter are doing it. I cook healthy meals daily and we are choosing to have no processed foods. The deliciously Ella website has some fab recipes on it. Well done on giving it a try. X

Applaud you both for trying! I went vegan when my husband moved me to a farm in the middle of Amish country. It’s a four-letter word out here in meat & potato land. But when I realized the cows in the pasture were animals no different than the dogs I let sleep in my bed it made no sense to love one and eat the other. I no longer wear them and try to avoid products tested on them. 10 years and counting!! Hope you continue to try! If you have Gardein over there the products are almost too realistic and Coinnessour (sp??) Veg has amazing recipes!! xo

I'm unsure as to why it would say it wasn't vegan when all it is wheat flour, Credit to you for being better safe than sorry, its clear the effort both of you put in, sometimes things do just say veggie rather than vegan because of the factory. Those other flours are gluten free ones which is obviously not a vegan requirement but is healthier

Morning guys! You are both so funny 😂Fair play trying the vegan diet 🌱 I am always in awe of people who give up things like alcohol, meat etc in January because January is such a horrible month 😩It’s 5 weeks long and the weather is usually awful. I think we should be nicer to ourselves in January and go skiing or somewhere hot and buy lots of bits in the sales with our Xmas money and start as we mean to go on in Feb ☺️ (spring cleaning, wardrobe clear-out.....) Hats off to you both and thanks for opening up your lives to us. ❤️🇮🇪

Your food shop was expensive because you bought a lot of packaged/processed foods. A whole food plant-based diet is super cheap (grains, pulses, beans, lentils, vegetables, etc.) Please don't say shopping vegan is more expensive, it's not! Wishing you all the best with the rest of your week!
@EmmaHill
@EmmaHill 6 жыл бұрын
We already had pulses, lentils, beans etc so we didn't need to buy those things and actually I do think vegan shopping is so much more expensive. We did a shop for vegetables later in the week which didn't make the vlog and it cost a fortune. It's often said on the news that eating healthier options costs more which is why so many people eat junk food because it's cheaper (and easier of course). Maybe you have it off to a fine art because you're used to what you like to eat and we were still trying to figure it out but for us it was definitely more than our normal shopping. Everyone will have a different opinion but that's mine 🙂
@holkangel
@holkangel 6 жыл бұрын
Fruits and veggies are not cheap at all. And if you eat a plant-based diet you need to eat so much more because the energy content is lower than w meat and dairy. That is also the reason for children should not follow the vegan diet.
@AnnieO_
@AnnieO_ 6 жыл бұрын
When i tried vegan for a month i felt hungry a lot of the time and so i bought more food to eat larger portions so that i would be satisfied, thus spending more money. Also, in terms of snacks i was having fruit and it's not as cheap as the non-vegan snacks i ate prior. When i told my vegan friends that i'm a lot more hungry on a vegan diet they suggested more carbs to fill me up and then i put on weight haha. I think it might be cheaper for people who are used to it and have done it for a while, but the start can be quite tricky for some! I'd like to try it again but plan it out a little more maybe, because it is a lot more effort than a non-vegan diet, and i'd like it to feel non-restrictive because i felt like i was on some crash diet for a lot of the time and im not about that lol.

I was vegan for years and got cancer anyway. So veganism does not prevent diseases. I eat meat, chicken and fish, not everyday but 2-3 a week and have never felt better and less tired. I was always tired and too skinny when vegan.

Thank you. If you can't eat fish, then don't. But it angers me when people claim veganism prevents diseases. It doesn't. I still got it at 34 years old. I am going it through now. I have changed my diet since. I don't eat it everyday and only organic or wild fish. Also, be on top of your breasts. If you ever feel something, go to a doctor immediately. I waited months thinking that that the lump on my breast could not be cancerous as I was so healthy and so young. Well, it was cancer . Perhaps I would not have had to go through chemo and then double mastectomy. But I am strong and positive and less hair! :) xoxo

Well done for giving it a go! I eat plant based about 50% of the time and I want to up that to 80% of the time. However, I think restricting yourself when eating out or ordering a takeaway is a miserable way to live. Also, I know I can never replace a burger or a fry up, so I’d never try. If people want to live a vegan lifestyle, that’s up to them, but it’s about doing what suits you. I’d love more people to reduce their meat and dairy intake, but it’s not necessary to do it 100% of the time, for sure! I really enjoy Deliciously Ella’s recipes if you’re looking to try incorporating more plant based recipes into your diet 🌱 Also, poor fur babies! My little Hector has to have his teeth cleaned too and it really knocks them about doesn’t it! x

Thank you Adrian ♥️ I'm more than aware I'm probably going to get a lot of negative feedback on this video for having some negative thoughts on vegan food but as someone that lived off junk food I had to be real and this was exactly how I coped. Trying lots of these things for the first time was a case of 'oh actually, it tastes ok' or 'mmmm I don't like that' but I've still got so much that I haven't tried and so the journey will continue and that's the positive I hope people will take from this. Me, the most unlikely vegan ever, is actually going to start cutting down on meats, dairy etc and continue to try Vegan things. Even I never thought that would happen 🙊

You have to be commended the fact that you did this period with a conscious attempt to address the conversation is great. I’m not vegan but I incorporated several things into my diet because of the healthy aspect of the diet. My family has dietetics so at 30 I decided to consciously add several vegan meals to my weekly meals. I found my skin and digestive system feel better. You know lots of Indian food is vegetable base and can be good for flavorful meals. Again I love your content. You are extremely inspirational! Simon and you are so adorable together! Was so shocked to see this title! I think it's totally awesome you gave it a go, especially as a fussy eater. It's definitely a learning curve and I've been vegan for a few years so I think I take for granted how difficult it was in the beginning but the fact you're incorporating a few things is great. Also, to everyone saying they're hungry, eat more! haha, plant foods have less calories than animal products.

Very nice try. Ive been Vegan now for several months and at first I found it very hard, just like your week, But the more I learned (by watching youtube videos) about how to cook vegan, how to get my complex plant based proteins, and how to add flavor - it became much easier. Eating out can still be a challenge though, sad to say. Fun to watch this adventure.

Kudos for completing your vegan week! Never considered going vegan, but now I'm tempted to give it a go! For me, being a part-time vegetarian (and organic meat eater) is quite easy and doesn't require much effort really - I've just never wanted to go vegan because I don't want to be overthinking my diet. Personally I've obsessed over food (or, rather, not eating, yikes!) when I was younger and that's just something I never want to experience again..😶 Sorry to be rambling on - love your new piercings 😍 and Simon's narrating 😅! 😘😘😘

I would definitely recommend trying it, just a week as a tester. I don't really eat a lot of red meat, I can't stand steak, for me it was just the chicken ( I love all chicken) and cheese/dairy etc. that were the 'struggles'. But if I can do it, the most unlikely vegan eater ever, then anyone can 👍🏼

Great vlog. I did a vegan week last May and really enjoyed it. My husband was converted too as loved all the variety of salads I made. I definitely had more energy which felt great. We are now flexitariane as love cheese and bacon, but prefer beans as a base for chilli and veggie burgers instead of regular burgers. Ethically I struggled as love my leather handbags and couldn't give up that aspect too....but love the lifestyle of vegans and vegetarians. Brighton has some good restaurants.

Yep the handbags and shoes would be very difficult for me too but I'm hoping that every little helps and even if we cut out some meat that we used to eat, and eat more veggies then that's got to be better than before. We loved all the veggie burgers, they're so good 🙌🏼

Emma- Anyone who has ever learned to cook, has always started off with a few turds in the kitchen! ;-) Really cool that you gave it a go! I am all for people trying to vegan-ify their diets as much as they can tolerate, due to the negative impacts industrial land use has on the environment, animal welfare, and people's health, BUT I personally, am not at all sold on eliminating leather or wool from my wardrobe. Until the production of PVC and polyurethane (often used to create vegan "leather" and the like) becomes a "greener" process, and until polyester becomes biodegradable instead of sitting in landfills for eternity, I would rather not give up my clothes made from natural fibres/skins. Yes, unfortunately they sometimes come from animals, but they pose far less damage to the environment. I would much rather buy a pair of leather boots and a wool sweater which can last me 5 years or more, than have to buy synthetic materials year after year, that send smoke flumes into the sky as they are produced.

I think it's a bit of a misconception that leather is just a natural product. The cow skin is actually doused in tonnes of toxic chemicals to turn it into leather, so the workers at most leather manufacturers in the world have a low life expectancy. Also, think about the resources and antibiotics fed to the cows, just to get their skins, and the methane that they release. Totally agree that it'd be good to come up with alternatives to synthetic leather (people are currently experimenting with pineapple/mushroom leather) but it's still better than actual leather which definitely isn't sustainable. Also cotton is natural and can be worn instead of wool :)
@alygootsable
@alygootsable 6 жыл бұрын
And I think it is a bit of a misconception that just because an animal was not harmed in the making of a product, that is the most ethically-sound version of that product ;-) Of course I know that it takes more than a cow to make leather, but at this point, I really don't think there is enough research-backed findings, to determine that one truly is better than the other (with respect to real vs. synthetic leather). As I said above, a leather jacket takes an animals life, (and as, you pointed out, takes human labor and a degree of chemical use) but I can have the same jacket for 5-10 years, and someone can even own it after that. There is no synthetic material that can live up to that, and because they get destroyed more easily, more has to be produced (and you would be hard pressed to find a person in East Asia whose health was unaffected by pollution levels/chemical exposure- which, in part, comes from the production of synthetic fibers- so I don't completely buy your "low life expectancy" with real leather argument) I am also well aware that cotton is a fantastic fiber, but I am a Colombian living in Scandinavia. This means that I am outside a lot, and freezing my ass off a lot more. Cotton is not always going to cut it. I use wool, animal skins, feather bedding, etc. to keep myself warm, and I will pay as high a price I can to make sure I buy something that was made as ethically as possible and will last a long time. I have just found that this, combined with eating animal products sparingly, works best for me in my given situation- but I wholeheartedly look forward to the day when I can be 100% vegan, or when there is a non-animal product just as durable and warm as wool or sheepskin.

What’s really great about this conversation is hearing that for so many of us we are making ourselves aware and adjusting our consumption as it fits in our lives best. As a nurse this makes me want to pull my hair out- there is nothing wrong with having good quality meat and fish - in fact diary meat and fish are natural foods that contain so many nutrients that feed our body and fill us up especially with iron,b12 and calcium that our body needs -I feel people go from on extreme to another either consuming cheap heavily intensive farmed produce to nothing at all and relying on the stuff you had this week which is awful - hence the hunger and tiredness. Changing say your cheap meat from the supermarket for less but better quality meat and having it say twice a week rather than everyday I feel is such a better idea both for animal welfare and our bodies

For me, instagram has opened my eyes to the treatment of animals and it took some time (not long) before I stopped eating meat. It was a bit challenging to change the way I ate but I'm use to it and don't crave it now. I'm also conscious about my skincare/ make up - not tested on animals - and try to avoid leather goods as much as possible. Whatever I already have, I wear but won't buy new leather goods.

becoming vegan requires the emotional connection to the whole issue. I myself am vegetarian (never liked red meat and decided to try and leave chicken and fish out as well and 2 years down the road haven't craved ay of that at all lol) and most of my home made meals end up being vegan bc the meat substitutes I like tend to be vegan as well, but I haven't been able to commit to the whole lifestyle either. idk if I ever will. but I know I'm doing something good with my diet. and tbh many of my friends who are at the student period of their life eat a lot of vegetarian as well bc its cheaper (at least where I live). but if you found some substitutes you liked, try eating vegan/vegetarian a few times a week :-) thats doing something. and if me and my friends/family go out they take into consideration my diet and make sure theres something for me to eat as well. I went to visit my friend in a different city for the weekend and we went out to eat twice, once to a burger place bc apparently the vegan version was bomb af (and it was lol) and the second time we went to a full on vegetarian place. the other times we cooked at my friends place and she ate the same food I did. in big cities its really not that hard to find places that offer vegan options as well :-)
@EmmaHill
@EmmaHill 6 жыл бұрын
ann I totally agree 👍🏼 you do need to have that emotional connection. And often people think that because I have dogs that i have that feel love for all animals but it’s not as simple as that. I’m similar to you, the only meat I really eat is chicken, I can’t eat red meat because it doesn’t agree with me 🙈 In the centre of a big city I think it’s much easier to eat out but we live in London, in zone 5 and we have nowhere that offers vegan options around where we live. If we go further out to where Simon’s family live the same applies unfortunately so that really would make it difficult for us to eat out with family. x

The world is changing their mindset on meat and animal by-products. For some it's harder to access and it's more pricey but eventually it'll become more common and cheaper! I believe it's healthier....milk causes inflammation, meats cause your body to become acidic which cancer cells thrive in....all stuff I read.

It's hard to eat vegan for one week. There's definitely a learning curve to it, it takes a while to ferret out (ha ha, NOT a vegan phrase) all the things you can and can't have....AND one of the biggest things for me was "taste memory." When I first went vegan and tried vegan cheese I thought I was gonna hurl. There were also fewer options even just five years ago, BUT when my head said CHEESE my tastebuds expected one thing...and what they got was something Very Different. I gave up cheese altogether for a full year. Then I was at a Whole Foods (do you have those?) and had a little personal size vegan pizza from the ready-to-serve section and I was like YUM. Vegan cheese. But I'd gone WITHOUT for so long that I didn't have a good taste memory of what cheese *should* taste like anymore...and this was yellowy and melty-stringy-pully and a little savory...and GOOD. And then I tried others and I was okay with it. But cheese was definitely the hardest thing for me to give up. BLEU CHEESE the single hardest thing to give up. Boo. But good for you guys for giving it a try.

I like to say that I'm plant-based and not vegan because I still have my leather purses, shoes, belts, jackets. Eek I've been eating vegan for almost six years. It'll be six years in March of this year. Another great option that might be a bit more doable is to download Dr. Greger's Daily Dozen app and try to get those in every day. I must admit that I almost never get in an hour of exercise every day. The rest of the list is much more realistic and you can focus on what you should be eating instead of what you can't eat. :-)
