My parents bought their house in the 1980s after so much hard work. Just like so many of their neighbors. They worked on these houses for years and created the community of beautiful Altadena. It was the kind of place you could go back and visit; see all your childhood friends and hang with your friend’s grandparents who still lived in the same home. This place was such a gem. I’ve lived all over and never found anything like it. Everyone is shell shocked. We were lucky to experience it as it was. I love you guys!

My mother's in assisted living in Arcadia and I know they evacuated half of Arcadia. Her facility's been without electricity for a day now and she's on the 2nd floor and can't use the elevator. The phones aren't working at the facility and my mom's phone lost battery so I can't get in contact and I'm watching all of this from New Jersey. I just hope they contain this fire before it comes down the mountain to the surrounding buildings even more. Growing up in Southern California in the San Gabriel Valley, I recall seeing fires in the mountains every summer but they were always contained and never came down the mountains. Now it's seems like they are so powerful and devastating and he's right, it's really dry there now, more so then I remember as a child in the 70's and 80s.

The United States Forest Service began mis-management of forests, brushland and prairies in the mid-1970s. This included wildland fire defensible spaces. Livestock grazing to reduce fuel loading was reduced or eliminated. Managers allowed fire loads to increase from dead and down trees and brush. I was in wildland fire w/20 person Montana Indian Firefighter crews from 1987 - 2001. We went to several fires in Redding, Big Bear, Orange Co and San Juan Capistrano. Love and prayers to all that are fighting these fires and those who have been affected by US and Cali-fire mismanagement.😢

If the fires get much worse I hope the insurance companies can cover all the losses. I heard some people say there were houses that cost upwards of $10 million but there were also cases of houses that had their insurance policies canceled due to fire risk. It's just that if 1,000 homes are completely destroyed, insurance claims could be in the hundreds of millions. I don't think most insurance companies could quickly come up with that amount of money and even if they do, it will probably be the last time they would offer policies to any homeowners in those fire-prone areas. I never thought those fires could reach down into the residential areas in Los Angeles but with the strong winds blowing embers for miles it seems it can happen. The more area the fire covers, the fire fighters become thinned out. How many hours can a fire fighter go without rest or sleep while fires keep popping up. That's a scary scenario that no one is prepared for. I had wondered why no airdrops were being done but I didn't know they couldn't fly in heavy wind. They need to drop fire-retardant to stop houses from easily igniting from sparks. Four major fires all in different areas will be hard to control with limited resources.

LA has a lot of work to do with building codes and zoning. These house constructions are stylish, but they offer essentially no resistance to fire spreading. The landscaping is not hardened for fire, with trees and other vegetation growing essentially right up to the houses.

Homes in LA are made of Wood the help withstand Earthquakes, vegetation around your home is key, you have to keep it clean. Also alot of these fires start in homes because of the embers being blown around by the wind so if it gets into Roof Soffit's and then your in deep trouble.

Not in that area- As it is, the codes are already very stringent and tight, and efficient. The houses are also mostly clad with Stucco, or similar products, which is fire preventative to a degree- Much more so than standard siding.

Not enough people fighting the fire when it's just a small bush fire around the house -- all ran away and it's impossible to rely on the limit firefighters to save their houses. People should develope a plan, prepared to stay and help put out the small fire around the yard before it burned the house and became 100' tall fire. Stucco wall and tile roof won't catch fire easy. It needs human or robot to fight the small fires, not the fire Dept. This area are new big beautiful houses.

If the dry brush surrounding the house catches fire, then the vinyl siding catches fire and that's enough. With no one around to fight the fire it's all over in minutes. They said that some areas had no water pressure at the hydrants. Multiple house fires at once wasn't planned for.

I happen to admire old maps. I found some quads years ago from CA, A-G only , from a state collection. 1900-1940 dates. the list includes names like Academy, and Altadena-1929. From Mt Wilson west to the Rose Bowl. south thru Pasadena, and very few homes back then. Who led the charge to over-develop this land? A great conflagration was inevitable. It was not a matter of how or who, but just a matter of when. Other areas are also susceptible and not just in California.

@@clonesharpshooter101 Ocean water desalination plants for emergency supply of freshwater to go after fires when they are small, more stockpiling of water in hilltop tanks, aggressive capturing of rainwater in the rainy season and more active forest management. If you need to close down a critical water reservoir for over a year for repairs (Santa Ynez Reservoir), you MUST have a backup plan to supply water in an emergency. Together those components would have made a huge difference and saved many lives and billions of dollars of damage and everyone knows it except the Mayor and the Governor.

On the one hand, I empathize with these families. On the other hand, I do not. These are wealthy families. Otherwise, they would not be able to afford living in these multimillion dollar mansions atop these hills, looking over canyons or the Pacific Ocean. They are affluent people with ample assets. They can easily relocate or rebuild. Whereas, those who aren't affluent, can't start their lives over again.
