I think you described Viking very well. One year ago we did a 15-day cruise from Bergen to Barcelona--busy every day with many ports of call. Being old cruisers, we kept comparing Viking with Celebrity, our most-used cruise line. Each has its strengths and weaknesses, but Viking was just so good in so many ways. Yes, they remembered us after the first night; knew our drink orders; chatted about the day. The two best cruise meals I ever had (Chef's table) were on Viking and two of the best shows ever seen on a ship were on Viking. We love Viking enough, that we are scheduled on another in June and another after that. We always stay for four nights in Bergen, two on the ship, two off, and explore our beloved Norway on our own. I don't work for Viking and my thoughts are honed by over 40 years of travel. A cruise well done.

Viking is the standard for us. No ships with thousands of passengers and thousands of crew for us. No children, no casino, no climbing walls and other tacky items. Staff is the best anywhere. Spacious, comfortable Cabins are all balcony, no inside rooms. Many public spaces to find yourself alone. We won’t sail with any other line if Viking has a cruise where we want.

We have enjoyed two Viking Ocean cruises, and your description is very accurate, little things Viking do are having coffee m/c in every cabin, heated bathroom floors, basically only 5 grades of cabin so no upselling, no casino, no gold sales or art auctions. The crew love Viking, and are cared for. Cant wait for the next time ! Oh and no children and NO TIPPING brilliant !

Viking Ocean is its own niche. I've sailed two trans-Atlantic crossings & have a Bermuda cruise coming up in a few weeks. The genteel sophisticated yet comfortably cozy atmosphere is glorious. The ship design is perfect. Love that all their ships are mostly identical. I agree that The Restaurant could use a little fine tuning, but that's nothing against the hard working crew who are understaffed like you mentioned. The entertainment was just the right scale & I don't think the typical Viking Ocean passenger needs or wants a lot of scheduled activities. The trans-Atlantic crossings are mostly sea days & between the food, music, lectures, shows, & dancing in Torshaven, there was plenty to pass the time. With a ship like these just sitting in one of the comfy couches or chairs & looking out to sea from the floor to the windows(that are everywhere) is one of my favorite onboard pass times. Bon Voyage!

My BFF & I sailed on the Jupiter in July on the “Into the Midnight Sun” cruise from London to Bergen & loved it. The ship is beautiful, the staff is so accommodating, & the talks are very enlightening. The food is very good & well-prepared. Viking ocean ships are not “fun ships” which I appreciated; no photographers constantly taking our pictures, casinos, or art auctions. Everything onboard, with the exception of spa services & a premium drinks package, is included. We’ve already booked another cruise for July 2020 & can’t wait!

I sailed on the Viking Sun crossing the Pacific ocean from Valparaiso Chile to Sydney Australia stopping for tours at Robinson Crusoe, Easter Island, Tahiti, Bora Bora, overnight in Auckland NZ and maybe Wellington NZ. We sailed up two fijords and then crossed the Tasman sea to Sydney. There were plenty of sea days which I really enjoyed since I have lived most of my life in the middle of the USA and get tired of land and trees. All about the experience was worth every dollar and I so want to do a grand voyage again even if I have to pay double occupancy.

BTW my trip was from February to March of 2019 and spent three extra days in Sydney and I traveled single paying double occupancy (couldn't find anyone to travel with me).

Yes, Viking Ocean is now one of our favorites. We Cruised on the Viking Sun over the New Year in 2018-2019 in the Western Caribbean, and even though it was our third trip trough the region we enjoyed the Viking included excursions, an extended excursion to Chichen Itza. Staff attentive, passengers seemed to be very academic (professors, college presidents and world travelers) we felt very much at home, and met several (soon to be) life long friends. On Day Six or Seven Denise (my spouse) did mention, I wish I could just have some Chicken, because as you mentioned there was an over abundance of sea food (Lobster Therm-adore on New Years Eve). Great Trip.

After 36 prior "regular cruises", we tried our first Viking River Cruise, Grand European Tour in 2017. WE LOVED IT! In 2019, we tried our first Viking Ocean Cruise, In the Wake of the Vikings and we LOVED IT! We are now booked with Viking on two Ocean Cruises in 2021 and one in 2022 on the Arctic Explorer to Antarctica. We do not see ourselves leaving Viking anytime soon.

Went to Alaska in 2019 and was great. In order we enjoyed the most 1) the beautiful scenery of Alaska - mountains, waterfalls, and glaciers are hard to beat 2) The ship was amazing - we had some 80 degree days and the pool was open, really enjoyed the bar in back of the boat as you could see the mountains and waterfalls as you cruised, 3) the cities were disappointing after being on Viking River Boat cruises in Germany, France, Austria, Hungary, etc. The cities were not much to see however we did like Icy Points Straits, Skagway, and Juneau. Signed up for Viking Homelands for 2021 but they cancelled our trip and sent the boat to China! So we are trying to go this year and due to Putin and the Russians they just changed our schedule and took off Estonia, Russia, and Finland. Understand taking Russia off but why Finland and Estonia (too close to Russia?). If we get to go on this trip May 16 - June 3 it will be our fourth Viking trip (2 ocean and 2 river) Interestingly we polled many other travelers on the Alaska trip as to if they liked the River Boat or Ocean Boat cruises the best. About 90% said the River Boat cruises - and we would agree. As nice as the Ocean Boats are they can’t beat going down a curvy river and seeing these fairytale cities. The walking tours were also awesome. Especially like Wurtzberg and Miltenberg, Cologne, Germany and our best extra trip to Strasbourg, Austria.

Question about motion sickness on the day with no port of call sailing. I have only been on 2 cruises, but both times I was sea sick on the long haul day of the trip. Watching things rocking around me for hours just got to me. I was fine on the days when we didn't have a long trip between ports of call. Did you have that experience on the Viking ocean cruise?

Thank you for the info. We love Viking and have done 6 rivers in Europe. Our first ocean will be in less than a month (Aug 2021). WE LOVE the small ship and the 930 passengers. Never have we sailed on a large ship and never will. Hate the thought of 6000 drunks and kids everywhere. Love that Viking DOES NOT have casino's or cruise directors leading a conga line etc. We appreciate and like dressing a little nicer for dinner, can't stand to see cargo pants and flip flops all freaking day. Yes we pay more but you get away from the trailor park burger king crowd! If you want average rip off crusing still with Carnival or Disney, if you want upscale go with Viking. FYI, saying food is as good as the North End of Boston isn't saying much. I'm from there, it's average at best.

Hey guys what was the average age of people aboard your ship? We are in our mid-60’s, went on a Viking river cruise a couple of years ago, and we were some of the younger people aboard. Made us feel like we need to wait a few years before we do it again. Seems like you must have been some of the youngest people on the ship!

Love Viking , for me it’s an amazing conduit to explore a region of the world. Viking ships are in short Top Notch Hotel Resorts that transport you in the most relaxing method between destinations. As stated the Quality of the Service, and Food is outstanding plus the entertainment is there not so much as the reason to take the cruise , but rather to enhance the experience. For me Viking is great if you want to do a deep dive into exploring one of more of your ports of call, my suggestion be willing to spend a few extra $$ if there are unique experiences available at ports. A few things , Take the time to enjoy Tea Time if you are at Sea. Book the speciality dining spaces. The main dining room is okay, and the staff to diner ratio is greater in the specialty spaces , but you will still get a nice meal. When you think of cost take into account what you might pay to travel by Air, Train or Bus between the ports plus the time , and effort needed. For me Viking is an Amazing experience / value when exploring the Baltic or Mediterranean.

In reply to Orlando and his comment below: Perhaps she asked to be called Princess. Perhaps her given name IS Princess. Perhaps she is a daughter of royalty. Perhaps her dad/mom/grandparents called her Princess as a nickname and this carried forward. Perhaps you might not assume. PS: Under "your definition" of Princess, why then is it not obnoxious to name a pet dog Princess ?
@nwzimmer15 жыл бұрын
I had the same response that Orlando did. Actually I wouldn't even quite call it obnoxious, more like cringeworthy. And note that he doesn't just refer to her as "princess", it's "*the* princess". It just sounds really lame. Maybe if he were speaking to an audience who knew some kind of backstory that made it relatable, but in this case it's just all cringe...

Nicely done! It would be nice to know your bottom-line assessment of the value-for-cost proposition on this cruise. Viking Ocean Cruises are more pricey than on other lines, but also include more. Would you say that the extra cost was worth it? Thanks!

Great question. Stay tuned, we are working on that very type of analysis and will have a post/vlog about it soon. Thanks for watching.

I believe Viking offers a great value, especially if you typically purchase an excursion daily on other lines. Plus, wi-fi and beer/wine are included at lunch and happy hour.
@sandidavis453 жыл бұрын
I would have to say yes! I have sailed Viking pre.-covid and we're booked for 2023. We knew the total cost prior to departure and there were no surprise bills under the door. We have cruised other lines and watched people with huge bills at the end. Charges for restaurants, booze, sodas, excursions, gambling or whatever. We love learning about our destination, no kids, no casinos and no nonsense. Staff is exceptional. Viking is worth it.

I enjoyed this review and video. I'm really looking forward to my Viking Jupiter cruise in 2022 (I postponed from 2021 due to COVID-19 concerns). The Viking river cruise I took a couple of years ago down the Danube river was amazing and I expect this one will be too.

Recently off Viking Sky and underwhelmed with the food, at the price point I expected more but it's no better th a other lines. The evening's were dull with few passengers bothering to dress up. Lectures were at a ridiculous time at 6.45pm. No tea in the cabin and worst Pina colada I've ever had, similar to a kiddies slush drink . Fine clean ship but not for me
