It's time for another episode of Martina's Midnight Munchies. Today, she's making Almond Flour Pizza. We're trying to go somewhat lower carb than usual because we've found that eating in Japan has been very generous to our waistlines, so we need to cut back on the noodles and rice and carbs. I didn't realize how hard it is to do so in Japan. Try going out to a restaurant that isn't very carby. Right? Really tough.
So we're cooking at home more than usual. Here's something we're cooking a lot. We filmed this a week ago and just tonight made another one of these pizzas. They're great!

Does it have less flour than a normal pizza dough recipe, or is almond flour known to be better for you? From a diabetic standpoint I would think it has just as many carbs. Just curious. Looks yummy!

I'm a cook who also loves watching your channel for the food videos. A word of advice for this recipe; don't get rid of that liquid from sauteing the veggies, or use it as a "dipping sauce" or whatever. Reduce it! After your veggies are cooked to the doneness you want, strain them into a bowl, return all that liquid to the pot and crank up the heat so that the water evaporates out of the liquid, until it turns into a thicker flavorful syrup. You can then coat your veggies in that syrup and they will taste WAY better on your pizza.

to peel shallots easier, bring two cups of water to boil. once it's boiling throw the shallots in for half a minute or twenty seconds. fish them out and then into an ice bath. they should still be raw and the skins should fall off.

cpunching Almond flour is actually just ground almonds, not real flour. So they actually are low carb, but yes they still have a lot of calories so they wouldn't help if someone is trying to lose weight. A cauliflower crust would be better for this.

***** Eating 1500 calories in one "midnight meal/snack" when the average person her size need to eat around 1200-1400 in a day to lose weight... She might as well just started eating frosting out of the can at that rate. quickedit- Doesn't matter if it's 1500 calories of sugary junkfood or almonds, anything in excess (like obesity) is not good for your health.
@Vykk_Draygo
@Vykk_Draygo 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah. Nothing unhealthy about carbs, and there is nothing healthier about almond flour versus normal flour. Any how. It doesn't matter how much weight you want to lose. You have to cut calories. All that cheese and almonds... yeah. I pretty much don't eat cheese while I'm cutting. It has a freaking TON of calories. Same for nuts.
@cpunching
@cpunching 7 жыл бұрын
Vykk Draygo Man, have you ever seen the visual charts of how many nuts equal 100 calories? It's fucking insane. 5 Macadamia nuts equal 100 calories. That's 1/12th the daily calorie limit of the average (sedentary) woman should be eating to lose weight. In 5 nuts. For the same amount of calories you can eat either an entire head of cauliflower, 3 cucumbers, 2 heads of lettuce or one and a half grapefruits. Thank god for calorie counting apps.

Dude, cheese is 400 calories at 100 grams. It doesn't matter if you eat carbs along side the cheese, there's still like 1000+ calories worth of cheese alone on that one "snack." Too many calories of any kind is bad for you regardless!

I recently used the basis for this pizza crust recipe and it came out great. I modified the seasonings to what we thought we could tolerate but it was basically still the same basic recipe. It was my first almond flour pizza crust and I had my doubts since some almond flour recipes have been a big disappointment. I was kind of suspicious when after it had been in the oven the suggested amount of time it still looked entirely uncooked so I left it in a few minutes longer. It still looked undone except the edges but I took it out and it felt kind of done? Anyway I put my toppings on and even used some spaghetti sauce on it and it came out great! The crust was still crispy despite all the toppings and sauce. It actually made a good sized pizza. I may cut it down next time and try making a smaller pizza to take to work. I don't know how well it would reheat if we had leftovers.

This is part of the keto diet (low carb high fat) and I have made these crusts myself. Another type you can do is make the flour like normal but take shredded mozzarella and melt it in a non-stick pan until it 'melts', but it just turns to like playdough. Then mix in the almond flour into the shredded mozzarella by folding it in on low heat to incorporate it together, then flatten it out as normal (though with this method the dough won't be as sticky as usual). It actually turns out really well. I do the keto diet for two reasons: losing weight and maintaining my blood sugars due to diabetes. I want to move to Japan and live there but knowing that a lot of things have carbs there made me worry that most of the things I see them eat are things I cannot have at all. But so far in six months I have lost 55 pounds and brought my out of control blood sugars to normal levels. I will have to maintain this diet for the rest of my life most likely, so moving to Japan on this diet concerns me. I am glad both of you have gone this path, it is good to see both of you doing well. Hope to meet you when I move to Japan in 5-6 years. :)

I actually made low carb pizza twice this week and used eggplant as the crust the first time and tofu the second time. I especially liked the tofu crust!! It was really tasty and you don't need to worry about it getting soggy. Also, if you'd like to make low carb burgers, I replace the bread by eggplant slices, I genuinely like it better than with bread!

It's not ONLY in one ear, at least not all of it is. Her voice seems to be balanced to one side though. It is pretty annoying. :(

you can use chia seeds to substitute the eggs. For the equivalent of one egg: 1 tablespoon of chia and 45 milliliters of water, let it soak for 15 minutes and it's ready

I use chickpea flour. It isn't low carb, but it does have a lot of fiber, so it won't raise blood sugar as quickly as other flours. It too needs a lot of spices and needs to be pre-baked, but it is still tasty. I may try this when almond flour is on sale.

reducing Carb intake is not the solution!!! reducing fat and Hormone is the reason, leave out the meat, cheese and tons of fat from nuts!! please, you see that reducing carb intake doesnt work, try otherwise! i love you so much, please listen!

Ah, but reducing carbs has worked for us in the past. And it's been working for us over the past couple of weeks as well. I've already lost 8 pounds since coming back from Hawaii. Martina has lost 5.

ok. i accept that! but i feel like its always a diet thing and nothing longterm. i am proud of you that you have lost weight! i just want to say that since I went vegan, i am constantly at a good weight, without working out. maybe you could try one week vegan? only one little week? 🍉🍇🍅😍

Oh, we don't eat meat all the time. We have many days in which we eat only veggies. Or other days in which we avoid meat and eat fish instead. We just don't post videos of those as often, and so people think we eat meat incessantly. We like having meat on the days we have it, but we don't have it all the time :D

Dear lara. Reducing fat and hormone is the reason? Is this anecdotal evidence from vegan channels? Maybe this works for you and some people, but you have to consider not everyone's body is the same. Some people have genetic predispositions or other issues like Crohn's. Do you know that if your recent ancestor often suffered from famine, you may be more genetically dispositioned to gain more fat from carbs and also likelier to suffer from diabetes? I know vegans that have too much carb intake and you can tell by seeing how they have extra pounds or extra fat under their chin. Please don't think there are absolutes. SOME people for sure do succeed by reducing carb intake. Some people are more prone to getting fat from too much carb intake.

This might be low carb but it surely is high calories. Why would you even do that when you don't save calories? In the end it's all about calories in calories out. If I make a thin crust pizza out of wheat dough it's way less calories than this thing.

not necessarily because some calories are easier to burn off than others like calories from carbs are harder to burn off than sugar calories that's why most diets are based on protein, carbs, and specific fats and not just counting calories..
