I really wanted to call this video “Did Martina Break Her Hand?” because, for most of the video, we weren’t sure, and we couldn’t find out, so we’re doing our best to get by with this uncertainty. And with Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, Martina’s always in pain, so how do we know if she actually broke her hand or not? This is a real conversation we have. To be honest, the doctor Martina saw was really rushed, and we still don’t know what to do about her hand.
So we’re showing you a bit more of our vulnerable side this week, but that’s in hopes of sharing something we learned about ourselves in this video, because if we’re just learning it now, maybe you might be learning it, too. Don’t close yourself off from others. Reach out to friends and family. You’ll not want to, but you’ll be surprised how much better you can feel.
Our friend, Annika, also has a great KZbin channel. Check it out!

Simon, I really admire you for your commitment to help Martina but please remember that you don't have to do everything on your own. I work in the medical field and often see family members of patients get really worn out to the point where they damage their own health while trying to do everything for their loved ones. Just remember that in most places there are care giving services that can help you out when you are sick or injured and you guys need help. Knowing which services are available in your area can take that pressure off you. All the best to you both! I really love your videos!❤️

That is such an important message. The pressure of being the only caregiver to a loved person can be soul crushing. You cannot and should not feel like you have to carry that burden on your own. There is help out there. Nobody is alone in this.

Even when someone thinks they can do it all for their loved one, it’s still hard and we can’t always know how exhausting it is until it all piles up. Sometimes we need to be reminded that our loved one also needs rest days when they don’t have to do ANYTHING for anyone but themrselves. I have EDS and ME/CFS and Fibromyalgia and Mast Cell Activation Syndrome, and Central Diabetes Insipidus.... etc etc.... my husband gets a break each month for a long weekend when I go and stay with a friend or a family member who can help me out with my daily activities. It really is IMPORTANT.

@@shannont5049 yes I have. I generally have the feeling that they know what they are doing and didn't mean to say that they are doing something unhealthy. But Simon clearly expressed worries about when he gets injured or sick and mentioned it put a lot of pressure on him. So I was merely pointing out that informing yourself about which services can help you out in tricky moments can take pressure off you because you know which resources are available in your area. How is that negative?

As someone who's in a relationship with a chronically ill person, who will most likely only get worse as the years pass by, I almost cried watching Simon working so hard for Martina. You DO get that desire to be the very best support you can possibly be, but it's also SO SO SO important to not forget yourself in the progress...my partner would NEVER forgive me if I drove myself over any edge - whether it be physically or mentally - for his sake. It's a balance and I admire Simon and Martina SO MUCH for their beautiful way to co-exist while struggling with a stupid disease every day! 10/10 relationship goals!!!

Simon you are doing it right. Having too much muscle can reduce flexibility and add stress to your cardiovascular system. Like a dancer once said that you shouldn't lift weights, you should lift a woman. It is much more difficult to lift a human body properly than an iron weight. You need flexibility as well as strength to properly carry a person. Another fantastic episode. These videos are almost documentary quality but much more entertaining.
@Litcott

And if you Google the body type of the people who compete in strongman competitions, a lot of them look more like Simon than what you'd probably think of when you hear "shredded". Not having an ounce of body fat is aesthetically pleasing to some people but it really has nothing to do with health or strength.
@recoil53
@recoil53 5 жыл бұрын
Well lifting a woman gives functional strength - it builds up stabilizer muscles and proper form also has the muscles working in concert. But look at wide receivers, corner backs, and basketball players - very strong, have flexibility. You can have strength and flexibility, you have to work on both. That's why some football players also do yoga. A good use of rest days is flexibility and cardio.

Aesthetics don't equal strength. Getting big cut muscles may make you look strong but it's actually just the visual ; gaining real strength doesn't really look like anything. I mean ; look at the Mountain from GOT. He is pretty damn strong, and meaty, and isn't particularly lean or sculpted.

Because a strong muscle is a long and flexible muscle but lots of body builders work out for the looks and people with bulky thick muscles often have short muscles and that's rather bad. That's at least what I read, pretty interesting :)

Jae B I know people who work out like mad but don‘t stretch and literally squish all the liquids out of their intervertebral discs, thus ruining their back. The muscle grows thicker, looks „better“, but it needs to be stretched out to stay healthy. Doing some sun salutations or something after training is crucial to stay healthy over the years. So that yoga dude that all the shredded dudes make fun of has deep muscle control and strenght that ultimately keeps him going til he old and grey.

Good for you and being vulnerable Simon. Men definitely also struggle with body image issues. Keep doing what makes you feel good and healthy, ultimately that's what matters most. You recognize that while you worked hard to have a positive week, it was still a crummy week to get through. I sincerely appreciate your relatability, you never try to paint this picture of a perfect and easy emotional journey through your struggles. You always acknowledge that there will be times where it's easy to snap back and find your joy, but other times it will be a nonstop battle to get there. Martina - I have hEDS as well. Thank you for spreading awareness and the reality of chronic illness! Especially the pain. You always do a great job of explaining it. I wasn't diagnosed until 17, but struggled and looked for answers my whole life. I'm 28 now. Apparently (and unfortunately) I have a "nasty case" of it, whatever that means... I think they may also be referring to the fact that I have almost all of the major related comorbidities (POTS, MCAD, Gastroparesis, etc.). So I wonder, do you have any comorbidities? If you're comfortable talking about that, of course. Regardless, thank you. You are making a difference. P.S.- Can we talk about how amazing Simon is? If only there were more like him! What a kind way to think and support. And I'm sure it makes you feel more hopeful and secure about the future. You are a lucky girl! And thank you Simon for being a great example of a kind, supportive partner just by being you.

Now I know what to say and help my doctor the best I can. It’s so difficult to figure things out when you look fine and I have a guilt issue of not wanting to burden my doctor and laugh and smile through the pain to be polite.... even when In the Er about to go in for surgery or put on dilaudid. Simon, basically you rock. Please clone yourself, or give "How To Guy" lessons, or something! The really ripped ones usually dump so much of their time and personality into it that "ripped" is kind of woman-code for "self absorbed and not much fun to talk to." It's kind of like an evolutionary warning, like the bright colors on poisonous toads.🧠💤 Martina, thank you once again for sharing and being an inspiration. No exaggeration. THANK YOU for explaining about pain description. As a nurse, it's so hard when nearly every patient says "it's 10/10 and aching" regardless. I try teach patients about numbers and types, but they don't always want to hear it. Being accurate in your description helps SO MUCH. ☺️
@vixxcelacea2778
@vixxcelacea2778 5 жыл бұрын
I think a lot of people feel like if they aren't dying, they won't be taken seriously, so they say a 10 to get help. Not a nurse, but I wish people would understand that the level is there for a reason, it's not meant to say "oh, you're just a six, walk it off" it's meant to help understand what could be happening. There are some cases where a dull 2-4 ache in a specific place can be a sign of something much more serious and sudden intense pain should never be ignored. Don't under or oversell what you are feeling. Your pain matters regardless of intensity and level. Giving an honest description helps everyone understand what could be the problem. Sincerely a person who's never had a 10 pain, but has definitely felt 8. I understand a 10 means I think I am literally dying and a 4 is nothing to sneeze at.

First, props to you for being a nurse and second, I think it’s going to take me awhile like Martina to figure out pain description words 😆 When I first went to the ER last year due to an internal bleed, all I could think was why the **** do I have to keep repeating myself! I was super polite though, never rose my voice or swore at anyone but internally I was haha. I guess unless you are experienced you won’t really know, some people do have higher pain tolerance or is just stubborn. I refused to take the pain meds unless it got to the point it hurt to even breathe haha but I will definitely try to be more descriptive next time but I get Martina when you go to a place that has no idea what your condition is they get confused or blame common things.

Everything that Simon said about being shredded: YES. I, too, see fitness models say, "Anyone can do this," but we have to remember the sacrifices they make to look that way. It's a LOT of time and mental energy. I once was on a very regimented workout/diet plan, but my life revolved around that stuff. I was constantly planning my life around food and workouts. If you want to be shredded, that is the sacrifice you make. But for me? It wasn't worth it. People must choose for themselves what is most important for them.

I never really leave comments on any videos but I just want to say that Simon you are an amazing husband and human being. The love that you have for Martina really shows through how you take care of her and help her with her needs. Martina you’re so brave for sharing your illness and spreading awareness about EDS. I wish you both a lifetime of happiness.

It's amazing how you guys are able to make me laugh, cry, learn, be inspired, and better understand things all in one video. If you ever have those totally justified "why me" moments, just think about all the people you've positively impacted because of your unique talents and your unique perspective. You always remind me not to take abilities for granted, to be ready for any challenges, and to be mindful of the hidden struggles some people go through just to live a normal day.

EDS does suck! But thankfully I came across one of your videos recently and realized we have the same symptoms. Thank you so much for spreading EDS awareness! Knowing that others experience the same thing is so much better than a lifetime of misdiagnosis and not knowing.

I noticed tape on your shoulder. Could you sometime do a video on your EDS and how taping helps? I have arthritis and Fibro and hurt a lot; would love to understand better how taping can help.

Seconding the love for KT tape. I also have EDS, and it's a wonderful support that can take the edge off some symptoms and is lighter that a full on brace. (Though if you need a brace, always use a brace over KT tape, you'll just end up injuring yourself more). The only problem I have with my EDS and KT tape is that I'm HUGELY allergic to the adhesive on some brands, so I would always recommend buying just one kind and trying it before expanding the collection. Hope we could all help! Best of luck my friend.

@@curiouscatalyst That is part of my problem; Im a BBW and they dont make braces that fit my body properly. So I thought why not KT tape. The adhesive allergy is the one thing Im worried about.

I'm a newly graduated nurse. Every video you guys upload makes my day so much brighter. However, I especially love and appreciate these videos addressing your EDS. This video especially spoke to me. We always ask patients to rate their pain but don't always, as you said, dig deeper. Healthcare providers, especially nurses and techs, are first line advocates for patients with chronic illness associated with pain. Asking these pain related questions is a right we have to give to our patients. Thank you for sharing your experience, you are truly a beacon of light
