I also stopped by the local Asian grocery store nearest and got ingredients for kimbap, dakgalbi, and home made kimchi.... it's going to be korean food fest in this house real soon!

I went to a Korean restaurant today and ordered the soondubu jigae, and it was DELICIOUS!! Though, they gave me such little rice that I couldn't finish the soup.. I had the small one and they put in sooo much dubu.. I loved it.. It was 7$..
@junlee330810 жыл бұрын
hmmm...if you run out of rice then ask for more. In Korea, they will give you more for free. In the US, obviously they'll charge you extra unless you're Korean. In Korea, it's customary to serve extra rice and side dishes for free at restaurants.
@krzysztof_kumor9 жыл бұрын
Jun Lee Not necessarily true, I went to a Korean restaraunt in Michigan today and I asked for more rice and it was free of charge. I can't speak for the rest of the Korean restaurants in America. To put it perspective I'm not Korean I'm Polish- American.

Every time I watch these videos, I just wonder how they expect their common customer to put so much food away at once. From my understanding, it's kinda weird to ask for a "doggie bag" or to pack your leftovers home from a restaurant in Korea. But I hate to waste food! I would be endlessly guilt-eating food until I was sick!
@YangSunWoo9 жыл бұрын
+Heidi Hudgins I take doggy bags from korean restaurants all the time. You should just ask!

The burnt rice soup they were talking about is actually nurungji soup/tang, and one of the staple comfort foods in Korea. I'm actually surprised Simon and Martina don't know the name of it, and much less grimace about it (Simon). I don't know how to describe the taste in English, maybe "nutty" is the word, but that word alone doesn't do it justice in describing the flavor. All I can say is that that is what I eat it when I'm sick and it's quite delicious.
@SugarFrosting10 жыл бұрын
Actually, DO worry about little bones! My host brother in Kyoto got one stuck inside his throat after he swallowed it. He had to get it removed in a hospital. So be careful guys :)
@krnpowr10 жыл бұрын
Yeah, those bones are dangerous. I don't know why she was saying don't worry. Plus there's a much better way of removing the bone that allows all of it to come off in one piece. Martina did it all haphazardly, leaving a lot of the bone on it.
@penapplieuoi10 жыл бұрын
Many Korean fishes contain small bones that are pretty soft, especially when they're cooked. I was pretty shocked when one of my friends told me I can swallow the small bones down with some rice. It was uncomfortable at first because I was really afraid of choking, but after a few tries it felt normal. But as always be careful. ^^
@victorfugl4 жыл бұрын
I went back and watched all their FABFAB, and saw your comment. She actually says to "just spit them out" after she says not to worry! She probably meant not to worry about getting all the bones out before you eat it!

I've been to Owl of Minerva only, and it was good, they even have the stone bowl rice dishes. But every restaurant, even in Korea, has a different flavour or style for their soups so you have to try many to compare. We've had soondubu at every restaurant in our neighbourhood, but this one is our personal fav. And in total honesty, the one in Bucheon is still our all time fav.

The table is a cleverly re-purposed version of an antique style library table, the drawers were shallow and slid under the edge of the table just like that, and held writing materials (quill, knife for sharpening, bottle of ink, parchment) for copying from books or writing letters... my great grandmother had one in her house when I was a child--minus the quill etc...she used it in one of her spare bedrooms for sewing, but never used the drawer-- the handle was missing! LOL Ah, memories...^-^

Ok....soo...bear with me: I realize that the Korean language has its own characters and text, but why are there so many different spellings of the phonetic Latin script? There seems to be a consensus on Chinese and Japanese....but variations within languages like Korean and Thai are often so wildly vast. Case in point: soondubu...I've seen sundubu, sundobu, soondooboo (no joke), sunduboo, etc. While its only mildly inconvenient, I'm wondering if anyone knows why particularly.
@Sweetthang910 жыл бұрын
Aaannnddd....I just saw soondooboo in this video, having not watched it all the way through before my initial inquiry. No judgement, simple curiosity.
@embirlily10 жыл бұрын

Timmy G it's true though, bare with me dude cause i'm a korean as well and i had this argument over a month.
@Sweetthang910 жыл бұрын
Suzy My assumption...and its an uneducated one, is that the Romanization of Korean words and all of their variations are the fault of the translator, not the originator. I assumed that much. I assumed that the variations come from the sheer number of individuals who attempted to phonetically express Korean to those of another ethnicity. I was simply looking for clarification, confirmation/verification, and/or other details that may enrich the discussion. A generalization like "Koreans are idiots" does not enrich discussion...it spoils it. I would expect much more courtesy to your own community.
