In korea, when you ask someone if they had eaten, they ask "have you eaten rice", so yes, in korea, rice = meal. no rice = no meal.

A few months ago, I thought carbohydrates were the problem. I went on a low carb diet, and it worked, I lost 10 kg. But I've also recently been doing a high carb low fat diet and that also works, I'm further losing weight and I'm also less puffy. Turns out a combination of carbs and fat makes me gain weight. So eliminating either one worked for me. Honestly, try a high carb low fat diet and see if it works for you. You still get to satisfy your sweet tooth by eating fruit.
@MsWannabeGamer9 жыл бұрын
재기찡 It did work for me and the only exercise I do is ride a bike for 30 minutes a day to university and back. When I'm on vacation, I do no exercise whatsoever, but instead up my fruit intake and continue to lose weight.

[Turns out a combination of carbs and fat makes me gain weight.] Absolutely true. The body burns carbs first and stores any exceed carbs or fat. [I'm also less puffy.] That's probably due to excess protein when you were on the low carb diet. Protein causes inflammation. That's why people on Atkins reported joint pain and feeling "swollen". If weight loss is your goal, a low carb/high fat/adequate protein diet is most effective. Better for your health in general too since your blood sugar level is more stable. Better for brain function too. Absolutely superior if you are diabetic. But I am glad you are doing well on a low fat/high carb diet even though I think the issue was protein which most Americans consume way too much of.

재기찡 not true. if you want to lose weight: eat less than you burn. it doesn't matter if it's low carb or high carb, if you're at a caloric deficit you lose weight. it might not work for some people because they're simply not at a deficit. if you go high carb but reduce total food intake so you're at a deficit; you still lose weight without aerobic exercise. it's just math.

+Silver Panda, Rice is mostly carbohydrates. Carbohydrates get broken down to its smaller counterparts called glucose, which gets used immediately by the body to create energy. Your brain cells and red blood cells need glucose as food and nothing else. Glucose will be used, AND also stored at the same time in your body as fat (triacylglycerides), or glycogen (a long string of glucose). By storing the energy in your body. It's the body's survival mechanism to prepare for long periods of starvation. This is way people consume a low amount of carbs, mostly for brain cells and red blood cells. If you consume less carbs, the body will exhaust the glucose first, then glycogen, then fats. In case of extreme starvation, your muscles will be broken down. Now, how you're eating rice three times a day and still not gaining weight might be a genetics thing where you burn glucose at a much higher rate than others, hence the term "fast metabolism." If you exercise regularly, you would also burn a lot of glucose. Everyone's different.

If Americans love bread, then us Asians, we love rice in every single meal. Our day wouldn't be complete without eating rice 3 times a day
@bluworld1310 жыл бұрын
Most Asians have a high metabolism from many generations of eating rice in every meal which is high in carbohydrates. Americans that have ancestors from Europe, Africa and South & North American natives have not eaten rice in multiple meals or everyday so their metabolism is not as fast. I am a mixed race black/white American and I was to eat rice with every meal I would gain weight very fast. I don't have a high metabolism to burn it off. It's has to do with the hereditary genes and the region. For example Natives from Alaska eat seal and whale meat that has brown fat. Most Alaskans carry brown fat in their bodies to store for energy to keep body temperature normal and prevent hypothermia (freezing to death). It's in their genes to have that ability since no one else can save brown fat in their bodies.

+Rocío De león Alburez. Um, no... Carbs don't make you lean. Calories make you fat, whether they're from carbs, fats, or proteins. Less calories make you lean. You need a balanced diet (in the proper proportions) consisting of carbs, fats, and proteins in order to be lean *and* healthy. To lose or gain weight you need to figure out how many calories you actually need. For example, If you're a 170lb Active male (meaning, exercising 4x a week for an hour each session) your basal metabolic rate is around 1800 calories, just to breathe and sit on your ass. To maintain yourself in your active lifestyle you'd need around 2800 calories. You should be eating .8-1g protein and .3-.4g fats per pound of bodyweight, and the rest of your daily allotted calories should be carbs. To lose weight, reduce calories by 5-10%. To gain mass/muscle, increase your protein intake to 1-1.5g per lb and increase total calorie intake by 5-10%.
@elizam.199 жыл бұрын
You should go high carb low fat vegan 😌✌🏼️
@PorcupinePunched9 жыл бұрын
+TanjaEubanks Correct, sort of. We are great at processing carbs in our bodies, and carbs are not inherently "fat", however it is easy to over consume carbs and bloat your caloric intake for the day, and in turn bloat yourself. When we process carbs in our bodies first they turn into glucose, and if that doesn't get burned quickly, it turns into glycogen which we store in our muscles and liver. There is a limit to how much glycogen we can store though. Once you reach the limit excess glycogen becomes triglycerides. www.livestrong.com/article/349952-glycogen-triglycerides/

CARBS ARE ESSENTIAL
@gustavlp8 жыл бұрын
+AyeItsMe No. They are not at all essential. If you want to claim the opposite, please show me a single scientific report (not som journalist article) mentioning any essential carbohydrates. Of course you want to believe that carbs are essential, since they taste SOOO goddamn good. Personally, I LOVE bread, pasta, cookies and rice etc, but sadly, they're absolutely not essential. And even worse, they're really problematic in human bodies. Fat however, is the most essential energy source for humans, followed by protein. The key point here is that an "essential" nutrient is a nutrient that humans CANNOT live without. And by "live" I mean live, as in *not dead*. Humans are perfectly capable of living without carbs, and in fact, much better off. If you want to read more, like a plethora of different reports written by medical doctors and biochemical scientists, check out this summary: highsteaks.com/carbohydrates/ Ignore the fact that this particular website is "meat-loving". I just chose this since many quotes and reports were collected and linked in that article. In other words, I'm not using that particular website as any sort of authoritative source. I'm just using it to easily show a condensed summary of quotes and reports, for which there are many links. There are links to the original books and reports, including cohort, observational and clinical studies. Like this one: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2129159/ , published in the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. I'm sorry to burst you bubble. Carbs are indeed incredibly tasty and amazing to eat, but they're not essential at all.

Hey guys! I was "no carbs" too at the beginning, but that s*cks. Why? Because every cell of our body needs carbs to function (not protein, and even less fat. Maybe some but just in little amounts). Did you ever notice that fruits or vegetables are PURE carbs :D? fruits = sugar. But sugar we need to live. Please check out the 80/10/10 diet or RawTill4 Diet! Carbs are good. Eat more carbs too loose weight, cut off animal products and fats and you will feel soooooooo good! I promise. I know so many people outside there living this lifestyle, eating up to 3000 calories a day, not working out like crazy or something (sometimes even no workouts) and being lean, healthy and happy! (The diets I mentioned are mostly about raw foods. But thats really not necessary. You can perfectly eat only cooked meals all day long and have the same results)

80 10 10 is unhealthy and unsustainable - Douglas Graham looks like death, pale and frail. RawTill4 is hilarious to me because all those gurus who used to preach to NEVER EVER eat cooked foods now suddenly eat cooked foods again. Just eat a normal, balanced diet, no need for fads.

I lost weight eating rice, vegetables, tofu and maybe some fruit for lunch most days. I don't think rice is bad at all, it makes you feel full and stops you snacking. I think it has more to do with in between foods that add on the weight. Portions to obviously, eat more vegetables, and a smaller serve or rice and protein.

Why stop eating rice or noodles when they're delicious? Just eat less. You know you can just eat half of the rice... Your body needs all of the stuff - carbs, fat, proteins...

rivoncz I think they mean more refined carbs. Fruits and Vegetables are considered carbs, but the fiber and vitamins they contain makes them good for you whereas a piece of bread just goes straight to sugar.
@gustavlp9 жыл бұрын
+rivoncz No, carbs are not at all needed. In fact, you're MUCH better off without them. I don't feel like arguing with you, since you seem to have very little understanding of biology and nutrition. @rivoncz9 жыл бұрын
gustavlp No, I don't have that much understanding of biology but I'm quite well-versed in exact sciences as I'm an IT guy. I didn't know what ketosis is but I know it now. Anyway, it seems that you are right that carbs are not needed so much as the body can create glucose from other sources, but I'm not sold on the idea that any kind of "sugar" is not needed. Also according to multiple studies, it was shown that low-carb diet is only a little bit better or not better at all than normal diet, but more studies are needed. Either way, low-carb diet has still not been proven as working or more effective than conventional diet. By the way, that article sucks as it says that "sugars are bad" when it doesn't provide any verifiable source on that issue.
@Euleogy9 жыл бұрын
A 'normal' diet does have carbs, but as I said earlier, the type of carbs matter. There are health factors that can limit this, as well as what the body is used to. Personally, I have PCOS, and so I need to eat a low-carb diet, but most people are fine with the carbs they need. You can get those carbs from non-grain sources though.

@DJIndy9 жыл бұрын
Betzy Maya They only don't work when people foolishly get the idea that they can just revert back to the way they previously ate and be fine. If you go back to eating the way that made you fat to begin with, it will do it again. High carb doesn't work for most people (maybe most of European decent?) because it causes an insulin response (if you are insulin resistant) which makes you hungry/sluggish, and thus you'll end up eating more and doing less. Fructose and Sucrose sugars are some of the worst offenders for this effect, but other carbs typically act similarly, though typically to a lesser degree. Fats, on the other hand, satisfy hunger much better and do not typically make you sluggish when you are insulin resistant. Protein is kinda in between the two, but you need a certain amount of protein to maintain muscles (and to convert into what glucose your body actually needs when in ketosis).

wasilaify Exactly. Just look at what bears do in in order to gain copious amounts of weight before going into hibernation... They stop eating real food such as fatty salmon and other meats, and instead start eating sugary/carby foods like berries, fruits and plants. They gain weight incredibly fast, and the same goes for humans. We have evolved to eat fat as out primary energy source, especially saturated fats, since they are the most chemically stable. The problem is that we've been fed the wrong information for about 30 years, starting with ONE single study conducted in the mid 80's, by a man named Ancel Keys. His study was later found to be severely flawed, but governments had already changed their guidelines for health, and thus begun the "fear of fat" as well as the obesity epidemic. :/

I lost 20 pounds in Korea, and gained it ALL back when I came to Canada. I think that Korean food in general focuses on veggies and protein, which is why it is easier to lose weight. North America in general is so carb and sugar heavy, that it can be difficult to lose weight, even when you try. Also, most of the foreigners don't have cars, so it is easier to just walk everywhere, which probably helped.

go jump invisible rope in that small area where your "balcony" is, just do it for like 15-30 minutes at a time, jumping rope is more intensive than running but hard to do constantly while still being cardio

I’m on a ketogenic diet for a while now. So I’ve been trying to cut back on the carbs and sugars but I feel so much better not eating that stuff anymore!

I got my parents to buy organic coconut oil at Costco on a whim, after hearing about all the health benefits, and I really recommend that you at least try it. It is solid or liquid depending on the room temp, but it literally melts on your finger. Now, it DOES add a coconut flavor to many dishes (you can tone it down by using olive or another oil at the same time). Usually the flavor is a yummy bonus, but there are some times it clashes with the dish's own flavors, so use discretion. ^^

I specifically said that fat is a much more "durable" energy source, and that carbs are much faster, which makes your body choose them before it chooses to use the fat. And just for the record, "cutting out carbs" doesn't mean no carbs AT ALL. I means that you cut out the biggest carb sources, such as pasta, bread, rice and so on. It's impossible to completely avoid carbs, since almost everything except meat, fish, chicken etc. and some oils have carbs. Even broccoli has quite a number of carbs.

I'm actually researching traditional korean food because of things like the china study that suggest you should eat mostly carbs and almost no fat or animal products. This seems like it would be much easier for you! Look up dr macdougal and or hclf vegan. It's really easy to just make bibimbap without the oil.

what I have learned in nutritional research is that white rice, which is starch, is just complex sugar and will store itself easily as fat. same goes for all "white" grain products(bread, flour, etc). brown rice has more fiber to slow down the absorption, and is okay on a diet, though cutting the carbs they mentioned out of their diet is not bad, as long as they have veggies, which contain good carbs, nutrients and fiber, all necessary for healthier eating

You could switch white rice to brown rice and eat only half a serving per meal - that worked for me so far!! (half a serving would be roughly 120g and i'm sure in Korea it's not difficult to find a food scale that measures in grams) But way to go guys. You guys look great.

I too have been trying to lose weight recently but I haven't been keeping track of my weight. I do some exercise such as dancing and I watch workout videos online. As for my diet I should note I am a vegetarian and am currently on a no flour diet. It's tough cutting out all junk food but I really want to lose a few more pounds and tone up. Thanks for this video it really has motivated me again! (I also have super epic dance parties!)

I have Ehlers Danlos. And I used to love them 8 years ago without ever knowing I had it then. I just related to her issues. And we lived in Korea. Then years later I was diagnosed. Now I’d love to just talk to her about it. ♥️

You don't have to cut them out of your diet entirely but I'm sure if you maybe cut your rice and noodle portions in half it would help you lose some weight. You could also try swapping white rice and noodles for brown rice and whole grain noodles because whole grains are the carbs that your body needs for energy. For me I've found it's really tough to cut out carbs entirely from my diet, so I just try to eat smaller portions of them and eat more meat and veggies. Hope this helps :)

Yes. Cutting down rice and noodles will help you reduce your weight. I used to have rice with my meal 3 times a day. To T and since I am Asian it is hard to eliminate rice completely from my diet. I started out slow. I cut it down to only 1 serving of white rice per day. Like Martina and Simon said it is not just a diet. It is more of a life-style changing thing. Within 2 months period, I lost 10lbs. Nowadays I can enjoy a meal without rice.

밥 (rice) is the Korean version, yes, and it does mean meal as well. But I think what Zen is trying to say is that if you were to change 밥 to hanja (Chinese characters), it's also the Chinese word for rice/meal. It's the same with Japanese.

Me too because that's practically one of my only diet. But you don't 'have' to completely give it up. What I do is only eat white rice on Saturday. You're more likely to break your new diet if you just completely give up everything.

So, you guys have mentioned that you will be staying in Korea for the long run. Besides a business visa, is there a possibility for foreigners to obtain a residence or citizenship in Korea? Is that something you guys have thought about and/or is it pretty much impossible to obtain?

If you exclude carbs from your diet you can eat as much as you want, until you're satisfied! So no more restricting your portions..You can eat steak after steak after steak (if you want), and you won't feel any sudden hunger later!! It's amazing! Please trust me, and hundreds of thousands of other people!
