Ebay screwed me as well. I sent guy a brand new unopened with original shrink wrapped serial numbered headset with pictures of the original box and the shipping box on the scale with the printed postage paid label first the guy claimed he didn't receive the item, so I told him fine we'll do an insurance claim. Note: I have and provided the original invoice from my supplier to prove the item was legit not stolen etc. Since Ebay has become a fence for stolen merchandise. When he realized the insurance claim would find out he received the item and he wouldn't get a refund he then changed his claim to item not as described he never sent the item back Ebay fully refunded him and kept their percentage cut on both the item and the shipping cost. Ebay took the money out of my account, refunded the guy both the product cost and the shipping. So, I paid for the product he kept the product and I paid Ebay's fees and none of the 3rd world customer service agents would not help me and after awhile I was just wasting my valuable time attempting to deal with Ebay so I had to walk away and quit investing my time with them. So the scammer got a free item and I paid Ebay and the post office to let him steal from me. Fuck Ebay!

back in the day i sold a couple of nintendo 3ds on ebay. one opened item not as described, i received a destroyed 3ds back. looked like a 2 year old had been given it to chew on, and the game slot connector was snapped off inside it. the ebay rep simply instructed me to close the case so they could set it up as something else, a fraud claim or something, i cant remember. so i closed it, immediately the customer got a refund, and ebay refused to hear any more on the matter. saying case was closed in favour of the buyer so that was the end of it. i stopped selling on ebay years ago because it really is that bad.

Sadly Ebay is full of these types and Ebay ALWAYS err on the side of the crook unless you can prove irrefutably your case (which is nigh on impossible!) Glad the scammer was found out. This type of scum has been around for ever though, back in the 70s my dad used to break vehicles as a side business and sold a factory reconditioned BMC 1500cc diesel engine to a fella. It was a top engine and the guy test drove the engine in the vehicle before purchase, he was delighted with it. Now, for those in the US & elsewhere, a factory reconditioned engine was called a 'Gold Seal' engine and was painted gold, the originals being green. Fast forward a YEAR and the guy came back to our yard with an engine in a small trailer claiming the engine we sold him had thrown a rod through the block. My dad had his wallet out to reimburse the guy when I came along asking what the problem was. When he explained I told the guy, quite bluntly, to f&$k off as the engine in the trailer was an original GREEN engine. My dad had forgotten but I hadn't!!

Was it Clearwater cylinder heads out of Florida? They also go by Odessa heads on ebay. They royally ripped me off. Communication was top notch before buying the set of heads and Communication was prime during shipping and then once I received the heads the only Communication from Clearwater was for the cores which I had laying around and just shipped off. A few weeks later I got the new heads out and installed the left side and noticed light through a valve on the right head when installing so I quit installing and contacted them with no reply. After a few attempts of contact I told them that I would have to take the heads to get the valves done again since the off centered all of the valves somehow. Paid $1,500 for the heads and the only reply was that I voided the warranty by telling them I had the heads checked by a machine shop.

I agree with you on the feedback ratings and purchasing, but some years back eBay went to a 12-month feedback rating which only uses the last year to calculate your feedback percentage. As an infrequent buyer and seller on eBay with 23 years of doing this, I recently got screwed with this new policy when I got my first negative sellers feedback in 23 years from a person who did not like today's shipping costs (neither do I). This lowered my feedback percentage to 95% and remains well below 99% today as I do not sell many items in a year...it should be 99.9% using my 23 year selling record. Not all sellers with less than 99% feedback are bad sellers.

People don’t realize that you are more likely to get scammed by a buyer than a seller. This has happened so many times that I don’t even sell on eBay anymore. It's a mad setup for sure, if you get a win off ebay you're riding a wave. It won't last though. I bought some items from sellers who put their phone number on their ads. First I apologize for missing it , even though it shows in the pics , and offer them a full refund and shipping on my dime . Then they get to the point . " I'd feel a little better with a partial refund " . That's the game they try to play . I offer a full refund , they want some money back . Just flat no .....send it back if you want , but that's the only adjustment I make . Everything I sell is well worth the money and thoroughly inspected . One scam to look out for. They will print the ebay shipping label to your house, but they will look up another road in your Post Office district that has a house with the same house number. Covering up your house/street road name. When The Delivery person scans the tracking number on the shipping label, it still comes to you as being shipped. Only it's at the other home. They hope the other home get the item and returns it, while they hope you don't notice and they pocket the money.

Luckily I only ran into a couple thieves but on those items it could of really hurt except due to insurance and precautions taken. I high quality scanned everything I could and or documented with high quality pictures and video of item being packaged. A lot of this seems to be the category you sell in, I was on Ebay for over 20 years selling my architectural sculptures, never had even one problem, but you sell in a category like computers, electronics or maybe clothing and you WILL have probems guaranteed! I lucked out because most of what I sold and shipped cost close to $100 to ship, and to return something would have cost as much, but they were custom cast and usually 2-3 weeks between payment and shipping. The final value fees on Ebay were ridiculous plus the Paypal fee even added to the SHIPPING cost!! so if an item cost $50 for actual shipping and the buyer pays $50 for shipping, when the Paypal fee was taken out you wind up subsidizing the shipping costs out of pocket. OTH people gamed it as it was- they'd sell $900 item for $1 plus $899 for shipping and paid the fee on the $1 sale. I had a set of 4 small sculptures and only listed one, showing all 4 , with the option to order the others, many wanted the set of 4 so rather than listing a set of 4 I just sent a Paypal invoice for the other 3, I still paid a final value fee on the one sold and the Paypal fees for the 4 but it cut my final value fee costs to a more reasonable amount that way. Ebay also went downhill when they changed from paying for listings 7 or 10 days at a time to FREE forever until sold, THEN people started gaming the search results, one guy had salvaged antique garden gates, he must have had 50 of them all the same, rather than listing them on one, he ran 50 separate pages and it would appear on like the first 6 or 7 pages-- pushing every other listing further back where nobody is going to scroll back 8 pages, and the stuff was up there for YEARS!

@@HobbyOrganist I have to admit your category is unique, the thing is I have sold some one off stuff I fabricated myself with some decent luck in the past. The problem with hobby stuff is exactly what you said there are people who have a bunch of the same junk filling tons of space with every tag in the dictionary, and some kind of bot pushing them starlight to the front. You can get a few sales in, but you have to make something different quickly because those people will latch onto your description and keywords regardless of if they sell something similar or not and take all your customers by pushing you so far down the list nobody will see you. I video and upload the packaging process and package weigh-out and shipping label application to the box nowadays, after I sold 3 items in one listing, and the buyer said they only received two and wanted a 33% refund. I called him out on it and instead requested a return and full refund instead, and then relisted the two I got back for double the original price. Same buyer ended up purchasing them, and didn’t mess with me a second time after I told him the full video was already uploaded onto KZbin. But I’ve also struggled with USPS, so refuse to use them anymore as one of their “associates” tore open a very well glued and taped medium flat rate box, but still delivered a torn open empty box (that was registered as 8lb weight) but buyers doorbel cam showed the box being waved around by the postman like it was (clearly) empty. USPS refused the claim, and closed in their favour after the third appeal. So I started using fedex, and realized how it’s actually no more expensive than USPS is these days. I used to go out of my way to support USPS, but now go out of my way to not put any business their way.

When I get stuff from Rock Auto, it looks like Fed Ex rolled it here, box all beat up, torn open, always makes me wonder if everything is still in the box. When I ordered my aluminum heads thru Summit, I was REALLY worried about them as they were heavy. When they arrived, delivered by UPS, the boxes were in perfect shape, not even the corners were dented. I was pleased.

Sounds similar to a lot of Amazon, you pay for the item expecting it will ship fast and get to you fast as you need it, and THEN discover after waiting on the tracking, that it's actually shipping from freaking CHINA and has to go thru customs and handover from one carrier to another wasting more days time! Ive cancelled several of those. What I really hate is you order something and it's marked "Shipped" because the LABEL was printed out immediately, so it wasnt REALLY shipped at all and could be sitting around a few DAYS before it actually goes anywhere.

If you get a buyer who wants to cheat you, and it's not the kind of item where you can clearly prove them wrong, you may well lose, their rules do favor the buyer. But their rules do provide protections for sellers as well. I've been on the seller end of several disputes where I wasn't at fault, and have won nearly every one. Part of it is being careful about how you describe and show the item, and how you describe what you are and aren't guaranteeing about it, and part is just that some kinds of items are more likely to attract cheating buyers.

In the earliest days of the internet (arpanet) the few transactions that went on were between individuals and went something like: I'll send it and if you like it pay for it. There was a point in the transaction where the buyer had both the item and the money and the seller had neither. Now it's the other way around. There is a point in the transaction where the seller has both the item and the money and the buyer has neither. Further, businesses get to make up their own policies that are always going to be self-serving to one degree or another. Even further, there is never any doubt as to the quality or suitability of the money whereas there can be with the item. The bottom line is it depends on what side of the transaction you're on. As a buyer it's better to use eBay as it holds many sellers to a higher standard than they would set for themselves. As a seller ideally you want to sell direct as it gives you more control. Neither is perfect, only preferable based on perspective.

His house is in the general area where the map shows his address, but it’s across a fence and on the other side of a tree line from my property. His stuff gets delivered to the front door of my building and sits there until I happen to go out there for something and see the package on the ground in front of the door. I always take his stuff to him when I find it, but that could be days after it was “delivered.”

By the way, even if you pay for extra insurance, it doesnt cover LOSS in their system or off your front porch or delivered to the wrong place! I had 2 crates shipping by UPS to California, tracking showed both arrived in a UPS terminal in that state, one tracking continued on to the client, the other sat there, I contacted UPS and they "investigated" and told me they couldnt find the shipment anywhere, sorry... I asked; "well, what about the EXTRA INSURANCE I paid for?" they said "I'm sorry sir, the insurance only covers DAMAGE or breakage" so WTF am I paying for extra insurance for???? I was never worried about breakage or damage in a PLYWOOD CRATE. Another time they dumped a shipment off on the WRONG porch- of an abandoned house, my client said tracking showed delivery to his porch but he doesnt HAVE a porch! on a hunch he walked down his street and found the box laying on a porch of an abandoned house 2-3 blocks away.

I'm old and my hobby is restoring gravity fed vintage Honda's motor cycles. I don't do it to make money. I'm 68 with cancer and not tons of time. Ha. My 75 Honda Cb 360t I just fully restored (bought the bike in really bad shape and it took me 5 years because I got cancer and lost a lung and spent 2 years in hospital) I say that because this is work that I love. I have a regular job even though my wife is begging me to retire, but I don't know how. I like my day job and I like getting grease under my nails. Ha. And I have an executive job but we are just working class. Anyway, I just finished my 75 which is exactly like the one I bought in college. It was the first thing I ever had that was new. Poor family. Got me interested on tinkering with stuff like cars because we had to keep what we had working. And buying that 75 Honda had me going from working 2 jobs a day to 3. Ha. One of them was with a salvage yard which I loved because I would just remove parts, clean them up and once in a while install but mostly disassemble before crushing and I could go any time of night to do it which helped me around my classes. Anyway, once I got finished with my Honda (the next day was a local car show and my bike was the first to win best in show. If I knew how to post a pic I'd love to because I'm proud of it and did it all by hand and with the tools I had. I didn't have a rich mans rebuild. It was important to me. Any way, if you mess with vintage bikes any, the tanks and panels and a couple of other parts are very hard to get with issues. Particularly tanks. Rusted are tough because they can rust inside to a point it's so thin it will rust through. It's easy to fake a good tank by putting a bunch of nuts and bolts (never use small screws like people say. They get stuck.) Rattle drain and rattle till all the rust is out then Kleen coat (don't use that crap either if possible). Anyway they're hard to find. Side panels are always cracked from heat and time. Long story. I'd never used ebay to sell anything but did buy a few things long ago when they were fairly honest to work with. So When I had an excellent extra tank that I had bought as a pair from Minn. in the US when I started my project, I snatched them up. One was almost new looking and the other almost the same but you could see some normal wear but zero dent's in either. The one was so nice I had to get a camera light to examine the interior to see if it was not original and called the guy who said they were his dad's and he had this thing about restoring vintage Honda's particular 360's and 350's because he was real old and had one as a kid. Hated to tell him I was two years older than his dad. Ha. So I hit a gold mind. Back then you could actually contact the person though ebay for messages. He had them way under valued. So much so, I contacted him directly with the note he had included and said I would feel better if I could send him something I have of value for a bike or pay a bit more. Honest kid (Kid of 42..Ha) and he said he didn't restore like his dad and was just cleaning up what he had. I was lucky and picked up a few other things that would go with another build on a 125 that apparently was his next restore. Here's where ebay and I get crossed. I didn't need the extra tank and it was a unicorn of an tank. Other than replacing the petcock and precautionary cleaning and inspecting, it was ready to go. I had also bought a few of his side panels (look at the fins on the 360t and you'll know what I mean) that he had made by laser printing that was thick and solid. The fins that I've bought from all over the world were cracked. Mostly from Vietnam for some reason. So I had a pair of those that were perfect and strong and exact replica. I posted the tank and side panels separately because someone said it's the fastest way to sell them when people search for parts. So I did and got them both sold in a few day after being posted. Maybe I'm just unlucky, but the tank guy said the tank had pin holes and wouldn't hold a gallon of gas and was rusted out. I knew this was BS but he knew the game and filed a thing with ebay and started a process that I had no idea what to do. I had taken some really good pics of the tank inside and out and he claimed I had sent him a different tank. Long story short the tank he had was not the tank I sent nor was it even off a 75 Honda. As this was going on, the same thing happened with the side panels and the same story. Ebay was on the side of the buyer again. The side panels he showed (he claimed were ine) were all cracked on the fins. Long story short I got screwed because I had no idea what to do and filing a complaint with Ebay was a joke. It cost me some real money which I needed for my co-pays on my cancer treatments (some of you know what I'm talking about). The good thing was I didn't get greedy and had a flood of people wanting to buy that tank and offering stupid money for it. Ha. but it was already sold. I'm sure he made about 400% profit (no less) or resale. But like I said I didn't try to screw anyone because I figured the buyer would be into vintage bikes and that was cool. I found a few great vintage bike forums that are great and honest. So I sold for my tank at cost plus shipping and all that crap. I had to refund it all and got back a tank that had been left outside for years with not cap, and had severe dents. Panels were worse and had paint on them which mine were raw plastic or whatever they use for laser printing. Turns out the guy that bought the tank had another email and IPO/Email account, mailing address and his girlfriends name and bought the panels. This guy knew the game and was good at it. I got screwed and no amount of contact with ebay made any difference and my case(s) were closed and you couldn't get any response on them anymore. I wouldn't sell a thing on ebay nor would I buy anything on ebay. Those side panels I got from somewhere in SE Asia were a no go as well because Ebay sell a ton of fake crap from China and the ring of fire. (I think that ring is hell) So. I feel for you and glad you were smart enough to not get screwed. I'm still in the process of the 125 but parts are hard to find so I'm thinking of a 450. Hate to do that because of the cancer thing took away so much of my body muscle I hate buying anything that I can't pick up when I drop it (yes drop and we all do it....ha) The 360 I can handle barely but the 450 is pushing the edge. Never owned one and just know what you can find on google for the weight. I also need to make sure the rebuild will give me time to ride it because life is life. Thanks for that post. I subbed your channel and hope everyone watches it. Wish I had. Amazon is getting bad as well so I just go to my forums and can do well on most stuff. I sold a guy a NOS set of radiator shrouds for a Honda ATC, he wrote me that I sent him used ones and "for that reason, I'd like a refund" (who would word it that way? I'd be pissed if I paid for something that was new and received it used), he sent me back 2 used junk radiator shrouds. Fortunately Ebay refunded both him and me, as I had no history of any trouble. That means he got 500$ worth of free radiator shrouds, not good, not at all; I got lucky. The Ebay model is to protect the buyer, not the sellers that pay their fees, it makes no sense...

I stopped selling on ebay after having several "customers" try this same exact thing with me. After picking up their parts/engine/transmission/etc in person they would complain to ebay and tell them i sold them the wrong part. Despite having a no return policy, ebay would basically tell me to take the item back and refund the money. Most of the time the buyer was sending pictures of their old part to them and saying that is what I sold them. Even after proving over and over that the buyer is trying to scam, ebay would give them their money back (not from me) and they get to keep the item. Each year I'm at SEMA I see the people at their booth and they ask if I use their site. It ends up with me going full rant on them. Usually the person I am talking to hands me a couple packs of their 10mm sockets and discount coupons just to shut me up and go away...🤣🤣

What matters on a third party sales site is description: get it right, get it complete... good enough so a county clerk with zero tech or repair skill [never turned a wrench] has a shot of identifying it correctly if the box split open and loose parts were everywhere. E-commerce is getting weird these days: search results finding walmart trying to sell things never [and I mean never] found in their stores, etc. Case in point, I bought a nice quality miter saw through Newegg of all places several years back - definitely not computer or consumer electronics type stuff they built the business on - they just served the listing and passed it through to the actual merchant. As for usps... if you don't pay for certified [or registered if you want the insurance], there is ZERO help on claims [loss or damage] because there is no tracking number. I found myself in such a predicament earlier this year, and post office had dumb looks, while the online tool [which they knew absolutely nothing of] was broken - the submittal itself failed because it wouldn't let me check off two boxes required. The breakdown? Seemed to mostly have occurred during the Obama years - man, he played alot of golf, and the country was quietly going to hell..

Where I work he have a “he who fits checks” so youcheck everything like piston sizes, journal sizes etc cos once you open the bearing and ring packaging you own them and a sticker put on shrink wrap and ring box flaps says so. Stops a lot of issues.

Damn I hate some people.. Why is there so many crooks out there! Another thing I noticed with eBay just eBay in general...is now when ever you wanna look up a specific item for your make/model etc it now is about boating sales for ANYTHING rather then what you wan't. Same goes for google searches anymore. It pisses me right off.

These day if I buy or sell anything on ebay I video the packing/unpacking process just in case. When packing I also film myself marking the box with random pen marks and fixing the shipping label etc.

I hate that people do that. Finding parts, other than engine parts for my 8.3 Cummins can be a bit of a challenge and I love that I have a handful of sellers on eBay that have what I need. I'd be relegated to driving miles to multiple junk yards with medium duty trucks, buses, and RVs to find what I need.

The real problem with E-bay is that the seller can't leave negative feedback on the buyer so these scammers just fly along and the sellers don't know who not to sell to.

I quit selling on ebay around 10 years ago after the increased fees and fraud started showing up. The best way to deal with the "it never showed up" issue is to offer shipping insurance as an option and a clear explanation in the terms that you are not responsible for lost packages. In the rare instance that a tracking number never says delivered even though it was and the buyer decides to commit fraud you can require a signature for expensive items to protect yourself from an automated ebay chargeback.

I had no idea, that a older Walmart building in my town, was actually now one of the biggest parts warehouse in the southeast. I thought it was empty, friend of mine was at a trade show out west, and someone there asked her about about the parts warehouse.

I have an important question to ask. I was tearing down a Chrysler 3.7L V6 out of a 2006 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. I haven't done anything with an engine in 30 years, before that I was a Chrysler Tech. Times have changed and during teardown, I stamped the rods and caps with the position they came from. I started going through an online manual to get the specifications. That's when I noticed the warning not to stamp the rods or I could possibly damage them. I would like to know from an unbiased machine shop. Should I replace them, just reuse them or should I get them checked by a machine shop for cracks? Please let me know I do not know what to do. Thank You! Steve

I sell on eBay too, full time for almost 20 years now. I have learned to accept that 2% of transactions will have issues and that 0.5% will know how to game the system for a free part. It's a cost of doing business. I try to keep sale prices under $300 so it doesn't hurt so bad and if the sale is more than that I take extra steps. When it's an expensive item I reach out to the buyer before shipping so they know I'm a human too. I take photos of the item in the shipping box, I take photos of the box, and I pay for 3rd party insurance. My documentation has saved me more that a few times. That said, most buyers are good folks and most claims are just misunderstandings about the part, it's condition, or how long shipping can take. The scammers are the most memorable though.

I sold stuff I found at thrift stores on ebay for 2-3 years and thankfully never had anyone screw me over. It happens all the time though. Only had one person say that they received the item broken and they refunded it (without returning the item but they sent an image of it broken) but I had insurance on the package so I still got my money.
