I wrote this on your previous post. I purchased ADG Absolu Instinct. The seller had over 1,000 positive reviews and not a single NEGATIVE ! I received it and realized it was counterfeit. Took pictures and luckily I had an original to compare. I was able to return it and then realized they suddenly got a bad review for the same exact thing. 2 days later, my review along with the other person’s was scrubbed. This scammer went right back to having zero negative reviews 🤬🤬🤬

Happened to me with seller scamming me a fake le labo another 13. I took it to nordstrom at the mall and the le labo rep said it smelled off. Also the batch numbers were different from box. I left negative review and returned it. The seller blamed me for switching. The sellers blames all the negative reviewers. I've bought before and got legit perfumes, so it seems like they sell both real and fake. I got my money back. I made the mistake of not checking the negative reviews. But here's the thing, there are scammer buyers which make it hard sometimes to determine who's lying. I've got solid connections with legitimate sellers on ebay and we have solid positive transactions. Ediscount perfumes, perfume empire, forever lux are my top 3.

Since Ebay won't do anything, contact the Federal Trade Commission who handles that sort of thing as well as counterfeit stuff. Also contact the perfume company as they may want to to enforce their proprietary products

Thanks, Ash! One other trick I employ when searching for authentic fragrances on eBay is to go to the search parameters and select 'USA only.' One still needs to do their homework from that point on; but, at least, the auctions originating from China, etc. are filtered out from the beginning and not shown in the search results. One can also select 'North America only' if they want to include search results from Canada in addition to the USA. (This advice is for people shopping from the USA, but can be adjusted for wherever in the world that the customer is located - Australia, etc.)

I've been selling on ebay for many years (not cologne) and the "no returns" doesn't mean anything, you can still return it for a full refund as long as you show that it's fake or not what you ordered. As a matter of fact Ebay is 99% of the time on the side of the buyer over the seller. I've had so many scammers buy something from me then open a claim with ebay saying they never received it. I'll show ebay the tracking number proving it was delivered to their address and ebay will still make me refund them. Then a week later I'll show ebay that they're now selling the product they stole from me on their ebay store and ebay doesn't care.

Great post. I am a pretty sophisticated buyer and I got faked out by an eBay seller too. But here’s the thing, the seller I bought from had over 1,000 positive fragrance reviews. They were a fragrance eBay reseller in New York. When I got the fake (and I knew instantly), I went back in to file an eBay complaint and the seller had changed to something like Hong Kong Trading Company. I got my money back, but somehow they swapped out sellers. The seller I bought from disappeared. I also was not allowed to leave a bad review for the “new” seller because they were not the original seller to me. There’s some kind of seller switch out scam going on which can get even the best of us.

About two years ago, I was tempted to buy some Amouage fragrances from Wal-Mart, and I'm very glad I didn't. I could tell that the seller at that time was a scammer. Hopefully things will change for the better at these websites Ash (and others) are warning others about. One time, I bought a fragrance from Amazon, and the sprayer didn't work at all. I contacted Amazon, they contacted the seller, and the seller told me to ship it back in order to get the refund. I didn't trust that, though, so I told Amazon that I have a concern the seller will sell that same broken product to someone else. Amazon agreed with me, so I kept the broken product, and I got a store credit that was more than what I paid.

What makes this even better is I tried to sell my very real Gucciy Guilty and it was struck down as counterfeit. Meanwhile, my Burberry Hero EDP sold (also very real) only for the customer to leave negative feedack claiming "fake" without ever contacting me at all. I hate Ebay, I won't sell or buy fragrances on there from now. My account with perfect feedback since 2007 got wrecked and there is nothing I can do about it.

Ya it's for sure a problem. It's tough for eBay to check all the frags. They have 3rd party inspections for watches, high end purses and jewelry but they need another layer of protection for fragrances too. I've gotten a few fakes recently of designers and clones, but luckily I can usually spot a fake now and get my money back from eBay right away. but I'm sure so many people get taken every day.

It's a lot easier to authenticate watches in jewelry precious metals then fragrances because they have to be up to date on all the nuances of the packaging and the cellophane wrapping across thousands of brands which is basically impossible then they would have to open up the package to examine the product which are not allowed to do because then it's a shipping hazard.

This is true for sure, not everybody selling there is scamming and if you know what to look for you can typically sus out a fake really quickly. The issue is that the majority of people buying fragrances on eBay aren't going to know what to look for and so they get duped thinking they're getting a great deal. It's a double whammy as well because then people selling legit products will have more paranoid people questioning what they've purchased because eBay allows fakes to run rampant.

Another issue with eBay as from a sellers perspective too. I sold someone an authentic celerio eleysium 100ml and have the legitimate receipts from a verifiable vendor. The buyer messaged me and said he believed the bottle was literally just water, but after asking him more questions because tested its legitimacy myself and have the receipts, the buyer eventually told me he hadn’t even tried spraying it yet. Wouldn’t be a big deal if he hadn’t also left a negative review calling me a scammer. I don’t accept returns on my account but that’s irrelevant due to eBay’s guaranteed money back, which allows buyers to force a refund and return if they want-no reason or evidence is needed. I lost money off of shipping and the buyer left a falsely negative review. Kind of crazy to be honest. STAY AWAY FROM EBAY if you’re buying or selling, just an absolute shady mess for everyone genuine. If anyone wants a LEGITIMATE 100ml bottle of celerio Elysium let me know.

Why, you buy directly from the company that makes it. I know that's what I do now, it's not worth wondering if I just got a weird bottle or a fake when the smell isn't 1-1 with samples or is weak.

I recently bought a bottle of Percival from a reputable seller on eBay, but there was something that seemed off about the packaging. I emailed Parfums de Marly about it, sent them a bunch of pics and they couldn't (or wouldn't) confirm whether or not I appeared to have a genuine bottle. They told me the only way to be certain is to buy directly from them or one of their official resellers. I sent it back for a refund and bought one from an online discounter for a few dollars more than the seller on eBay.

The difference now is fakes have flooded the market in such a way that you can't tell if you're getting real inventory from anywhere other than the company itself. It's common knowledge to buy Chanel fragrances from Chanel because they are so faked. All designer fragrances are headed that direction, even ones that sell for $50-60 on the secondary market.

In my experience, i always ask the seller if the item is authentic. Most of the time the seller will tell you if the fragrance is fake or not. Also i like checking reviews. I would say the problem is still somewhat small as long as you look for red flags, it’s about the same risk to get scammed as trading colognes on marketplace or reddit.

It is 100% not the fault of the buyer if they get scammed by someone presenting counterfeits as if they are real. That’s why there are consumer protection laws in place. I would suggest writing an email to your attorney general. The more people who get involved the quicker they’ll do so,etching to put an end to it.

My experience... Ebay. Received a fragrance and it was obviously, poorly, re- wrapped. It was weak and didn't smell exactly like the original. When I returned it the seller refunded me the price, minus $10. I called eBay and they actually refunded me the $10 so I was made whole. I called Walmart about a similar issue and they researched my purchase and I think when they saw the seller they literally refunded me the money and told me to keep the cologne. So obviously they had issues with that seller.

Ash, one more advise to anyone out there buying from eBay, make sure to go to feedback and read the negative reviews on any listing you are interested on. eSellers will give refunds/partial refunds if you give a positive feedback. People that write negative feedback will decline the money to leave a mark on the seller. Unfortunately not everyone do it.

Need help finding a note breakdown. I have a bottle of Cartier declaration sport. Even though it is on sale at about two websites, there is no information on Notes even tried Fragrantica and other apps available any info is welcome?

I think that for us buyers to actually make a point with eBay, the companies themselves are to take it up against eBay.

I know I do alot of transactions with Ebay, but for selling/buying shoes, and I personally have never had ANY issues. They also put there name on the line with authenticity guarantee. I haven't tried buying fragrances yet, amd this makes me hesitate even more

I have a counterfeit bottle of Lattafa Ameer Al Oudh Intense (from Amazon) and a counterfeit bottle of Moschino Toy Boy that came with a complimentary counterfeit bottle of Miss Dior Blooming Bouquet. The Al Oudh Intense box is missing text, the Toy Boy has scuffed lettering, and I'm not even unwrapping the Miss Dior. I thought the Al Oudh Intense just needed time to macerate or whatever but a year later and it still smells like trash. And I really thought Toy Boy normally smelled like a vague waxy wood.

Yup…EBay, Amazon, Walmart, Mercari…it’s a mess.
