The way I understand it is that if you have it at 1 percent, ebay doubles your listing so the customer see's it twice. If you use trending rate which is different for every listings, you get put into more categories. This is the theory in the U.S.. I've had mine at trending rate plus one or two percent. I'm selling a lot more expensive items. Some of the sells you get it's because your item was promoted but, the customer just didn't buy the one that was promoted so, it helps overall also. It's also a theory that you stop and start your promoted listings every two to three days also gives you a bounce in sells. None of us know if this is true or not, it's just a theory but, does seem to be working at least for me. Thanks for the video.

I do 1% on a lot of old stock and low value items and it's working fine for me. Will keep using this as long as it's working for me. Very good Vid as you explained a few things that i was unsure on. Keep the vids coming

Concur with you on this. Been using PYL about 6 weeks and, like you, am very impressed. I tend to push items a bit more at around 3-5%. I use it on about 75% of my listings and about one-quarter of my sales are generated thru PYL. I'm happy to spend a bit more to get sales. Old items I've had years have been selling very soon after relisting.

But do you have any idea how many of your items would have sold anyway without the promoted listings? Might be worth it to list 2 basically identical items at the same time and keep everything in the listing the same except one item would be promoted and the other wouldn't. Of course it would probably have to be done multiple times in different categories to be able to see if it makes a difference. Thanks for all the info Nic. Great video!

On your orders page (sold items) it indicates if the item sold via a promoted listing. All of my items are promoted, but I still get some sales that are not a result of the promotion and in that case there is no extra fee to pay.

Enjoyed the video Nic. I think the system works when fewer people use it otherwise if the majority do the promotions will effectively be cancelled out by increased competition..Also qtr 4 is possibly the worst time to judge it , probably more meaningful after Christmas?

I use 1% and promote everything in my store (for ease). Worth doing at the moment.... whether it will be in the future now they are showing it to everyone when they list, I'm not sure. It may end up that everything is promioted which then just defeats the object. Its good for me for now anyway. Cheers for the video Nic

Promotions have worked for my store and I have never, ever looked back. My margins have always been around 50-55%. I changed all of my listings to promotions at an ad rate of 9% and my monthly sales went from £3k to £5k. They’ve been consistent and I will never stop!

The 1% is working for me. It accounts for about 15% of my sales and have just taken it as an extra business expense. Not necessarily generating all my sales but must be helping.

Hard to find the balance however, we found if you up your prices of your items by 30% then promote your listings by 20% it can equal the same sales if not more because your a higher percentage. (It's just a horrible amount of money to pay out of the sale.)

Maybe you could message the Barbour buyer and ask if the promotion influenced them? Most people are nice. I wonder whether the success with a lower % is because it's relatively new. As more people start to use it at 1% you'll maybe have to up your % to stand out and it'll start costing more and more money for you. Maybe. Good it's only charged at point of sale.

Be aware that if a person cancelled their item before say you sent it out, you don't get your ad fee back. You get a credit for your selling fees but not the ad fee. I had this on one of my item. Very annoying as they bought it and changed their mind.

Great video nic. I decided a a month sgo to do 3% promoted listings and has worked in spates. Gonna reduce that to 2% and see if it has an affect or increase sales. Do know more % you go the more EBay will promote the item. Does get quite expensive if you doing for loads but i only do it for a certian few.

I assume that higher rates help where there are multiple sellers promoting their listings. If everyone else is going with 20% and you have 1% then your listing is unlikely to get much of a show. We run all our listings on a couple of percent and find that around 30% of sales come via the promoted listings with around 20% uplift on like for like sales. The fact that 70% of our sales still come via unpromoted listings suggests to me that other sellers are going with a higher figure and getting the top slots. It also suggests that promoted listings are not a magic wand; you still need to be competitive with your pricing and do all the other good things we have learnt over the years to make our listings attractive to buyers.

I have been using promoted for a while, mostly at 1% but have gone with trending on a few items. I think it’s probably impossible to say the promo sold the items without a comparison listing to test against. It’s getting sales so am happy to keep using it for the relatively low fee. Update, I was listing as listening, listed a PS4 game on promoted, it sold in under a minute lol, but it that due to q4, promotions, or just someone actually looking for it & was at the top of search, hmmm was going to ponder on that but what the hell its sold so good enough for me 🤣🤣🤣🤣

I like the fact that you sound a little skeptical about whether it was the promoted listings that got the sale on a less common item such as the leather barbour which may well have been the only one available, I sell lots of multiples and very similar items and my paypal tells me in reports that I got lots of returning customers (buying similar items) before promoted listings, I see my regulars now making purchases with ebay telling me these new sales are Promoted sales, maybe they prioritized my items photos when that buyer logged into ebay who then clicked on these to get to my listing, but I guess Ill never know for definate. I have a few items that have the red Popular underneath when searched, I dont promote these at all and being the cheapest on price worldwide just gets the job done regardless it seems. I would suggest to those on a budget, bulk edit your first xxhundred listings and move your prices up by 1.1% and then promote those items by 1%, As with being a seller we all aim to increase revenue so ebay also wants to increase its revenue - theyll take your 'bait' here as they would love the oppourtunity of taking an extra 1%+ of the capital value of all items listed across their platforms. Dont forget that eventually paying more promo fees will just be a race to the bottom, paying out a larger percentage but never get advertised - this is why im skeptical about if my items were actually promoted before getting sold.

I have been using promoted listings the past couple months and really like it. Generally it is frowned upon because "we are just giving eBay more money", but this mentality won't help your business. It's more of an angry teenager rebelling against the parents sort of deal, and we all know how that works out (Mom and Dad usually have your best interests at heart and know how life works better than you do!). So I asked myself a simple question: Would I rather discount my items by 10% or more or promote the listings for the same cost or less? I went with promoted listings and haven't looked back. I have been pretty consistent with the "recommended range" of 5'%-7%, not trying anything lower, but would like to hear others' experience with running 2% or less.

In theory I don't like paying more to Ebay as I already pay for a shop. I have also been experimenting with promotions. I have raised my prices to cover the extra cost. Results have been good but once everyone gets on-board does the advantage deteriorate and if you don't pay your demoted to outer reaches
@NicHills
@NicHills 5 жыл бұрын
Yes I was a sceptic too and resented paying more, and I worry to that if everyone pays to promote there will be little advantage to it... I think it is worth doing in competative categories, but not so much on niche or unique items.

i'm using personal account with seller hub. Before using seller hub the only option i had when i listed something was about 7% to promote listing. But for some items i really 7% is quite high. Now i have moved to seller hub, i can change individually the percentage, but is there a way to change the percentage in bulk on many items at once?

It would be interesting to test if an item you have multiples of (like the frank sinatra cd) would sell better for a higher price if promoted, compared with the same item (on Andrea's account) without (or with cheaper) promotion on it for a cheaper price. So maybe put the price up with 50% and put a 10% promo on it! Would be very interesting!

Hi, I have been using promete your listing and found that I sold a few items that were having around. So I put a higher pecrntage on those items and I did get sales. I also found that people would put my items on there watch list and purchase them when you re list with no add fee. But it's so up and down I'm not sure how good it would be now as so many people are doing it. I've got nothing prompted at the moment and sales are fine. So I'm undecided about the whole thing. But will still keep playing with it

Q4 isn't going show a true reflection selling second-hand goods will be interesting to see in the quieter months my own feeling is it won't matter to much the private seller just wants rid we need make a profit now if we get our items promoted as a business and the private seller doesn't that could make a big difference and I think we should automatically get that paying a shop subscription without additional fees

i honestly dont know how i feel about it i started low with the percent and got nothing.... went upto crazy percent like 15 percent i had couple days of lots of sales so i thought wow!! this is great then i had no more sales for the rest of the month than i normally would. i stopped promotoing and changed to a 15 percent sale instead had 3 days of 200 pound sales then that stopped too... i really dont know which way to go with it

Promoted listings is Ebay's way of making more money from you in extra fees. A slippery slope when everybody starts having to pay extra to sell their items. Ebay already takes £300-£400 a month.

Promoted Listings are NOT NEW at all. This has been going on for over 15+ years now on Ebay. Now Ebay is seriously trying to shove P.L.'s (Promoted Listings) down people's throats and get them to spend more money on this to drop their Sales and Sales Prices as well. I did this in the beginning including my father and BOTH of us LOST OUR BUTTS because eBay drains your accounts with P.L.'s. My father was a Jeweler making his own jewelry with Real Solid 14kt Yellow gold and Real Solid .925 Sterling Silver Jewelry with The Lost Wax Method of making jewelry. Yes, sales in the jewelry department picked up a lot and was nice, however A LOT of the thousands of Store Listings and Auction Style Listings with P.L.'s dropped off of eBay, or got knocked so down below the Site Views, etc. on search results via google, etc. I learned that Promoted Listings ARE NOT Worth it unless you got something that is maybe a Truly 1 of a Kind item. Even then, People DO NOT need to OPT-IN into Promoted Listings (Cross Promotion Listings).
I Set My Promoted Listings to 100% on eBay…Here’s What Happened.
