i have been watching some grimdark painting videos lately and some of my favorite results come from using enamels and then using the q-tip to remove them. have you ever tried that process? it would be fun to see you making a video about your experiences with that style and process, or see you trying it out for the first time if you never did it before.

Those shoulder pads might be the finecast farsight enclave shoulder pads instead of 3D prints. Hard to tell from the video

They are 100% finecast shoulder pads, I have some myself. They have the signiture finecast bubble holes so you know they are legit.

They are definitely finecast, back when I had a tau army I did FSE and used them, they have the same soft detail and soft edges around the top and bottom. a 3D print would be a lot crisper, and wouldn't have that distinctive finecast greyish white colour.

That definitely makes these more interesting. I didn't even consider it because some of them look like they didn't get printed properly, but then again, finecast isn't exactly perfect.

As a Tau painter, I know exactly what you mean about some of the mechs looking awesome and some... less so. Those crisis suits are the older version and I call them derp walkers. The newer ones have some subtle changes that make them look waaay better IMO.

I won't lie, I wouldn't start a Tau army myself...but I've always kind of wanted one of the suits. Take off the head, put on a small car. Paint it blue with flames and a magic 8 ball. Cause, I dig giant robots...you dig giant robots. We did giant robots. Chicks dig giant robots....Nice!

1:54 the great thing about 10th edition is that you don’t need to paint any drones, but if be wary because GeeDub takes a lot more than they give.

@@dominicparker6124 so in tenth edition, the drones are just tokens and aren’t actually used for anything in game. So effectively-in 10th, you don’t have to paint the (if you collect tau) guard/tyranid numbers of drones you have. You don’t pay points for the upgrades either. However the “GeeDub takes a lot more than they give” is reference to how they are fickle with their rules writing, and might go back on them not really being required. TLDR: drones are now basically like grenades, in that every model that has them doesn’t need to model them anymore.

That's kind of a bummer, I actually like the drones! But yeah you're right, they could change that at the drop of a hat. They are at least primed and ready to go, so I've got that going for me!

This is the first time I've seen Tau with that colour-scheme, but it looks really cool. I like the effect of them looking almost like a real-world military, like when comparing the Sons of Horus with other Legions of Space Marine. So far I don't have any Tau models, but I do like many of them, especially the Vespid. I'm thinking that these models could also be combined with some Gundam mecha.

The first models I painted were a tau fire team that I mixed up the pieces for and haven’t had the heart to fix lol. I have a lot of tau models to paint and this just reignited my drive for tau.

Wow, you're really able to build interesting narratives from the models you find online. The person who originally put these fire warriors together mix up some of the bits. I'm seeing breacher team heads on half of their strike team models. A bit slapdash, but once you figure in that it's a Farsight Enclave force, it colors in the narrative of the army. The Enclave is a break away from the greater Tau Empire, so they have to deal with a greater logistical strain then most Sept worlds would, forcing to improvise where they would rather not. I would play into this by making their armor, suits, and weapons to look beat up as you continue to paint them. "Yeah, the electronics warfare suite on the Ghostkeel is completely fracked and we don't have the parts to fix it. But, we got a spare Riptide shield generator that we were able to rig up into its place..." "WE GOT ORKS INCOMING!!!" "Make do, Shas'Vre..."

I'm a big fan of painting with a narrative. If your models fit into a story, even if you make it up, that always makes them feel more personal and interesting. Now that this video is out I will probably take into account all of the information I have learned from comments and put that into the rest of the models!

I tried to build a Tau-Army in third Edition, when this Xenos-Scum was pretty new. (And I a teenager, who was interested in Manga for the first time.) I still have a lot of Miniatures from this first "Start Collecting"-Box (or however it was called) unpainted. I think I gives this Miniatures a revised another day and maybe try either a different Colour-Sceame, than my tennage self back then or I will revamp that old Sceame with my skills from now, which I got, since I fell back into the hobby.

6:40 so I’m sure you know this as refurbishing stuff from eBay is your job, but it’s THE issue with tau suit models. The newer crisis suits have better ankle joins but they will still snap and require pinning in a couple of places (toe to base, ankle to foot) It’s funny because I’ve noticed it with the Primaris dreadnougts’ feet too.

I don't usually buy Tau in general, so I wasn't aware that this was an actual issue. It totally makes sense though, there's a ton of plastic being held up by pretty small pieces at the bottom.

Great video! I got a Tau army off ebay too this year BUT I decided no mechs at all. Its an all infantry army with 1 etheral and only 3 stealth suits guys, with like 80 infantry models! My theme I want to do is a fuedal Japan-era style where I put toothpicks on the backs with each their own banner. The colors will be white for the armor and sea foam green for that vintage 50's car color I love, and bright red for the accents on the guns n tech bits etc. I want to make my own emblem n put it on the back banners, maybe 4 different emblems representing a unique tribe the Tau incorporated into the Greater Good.... haven't started on this army yet but this video is good motivation!

Those aren't 3D printed shoulder pads! Those are official finecast Farsight Enclave shoulderpads It's a rare upgrade bit which you could buy to make your Enclave fire warriors look different. They're quite rare, nowadays, since they got discontinued a while back. The lore is that -some- Enclave Soldiers use them, but not all, and they use Commander Farsight's personal insignia and not the typical Fire Caste iconography

Oh man, the airbrush is like easy mode with all these flat panels, definitely worth getting an airbrush you paint a lot of Tau or mechs! Even then, it's worth it for most models.

When you use the sand method for basing, do you use watered down PDA glue to seal the sand onto the base, or do you find the primer helps do that just as well? I've always gotten the impression that T'au have always been the army everybody loves to hate in WH40K circles. Very cool and simple/effective paint scheme for these guys!

Tau definitely feel like a love/hate army! I'm in the middle lol, they have been fun to paint but I probably won't rush out to get more. I use a slightly watered down PVA just so it flows a little bit and it does tend to get into the sand really well. I blow off the excess that doesn't dry, which is not very much of it, and the primer locks everything in really well. Sometimes the larger rocks need a little more glue, so I do put some on top and around to lock those in, but other than that everything sticks really well and doesn't come off even when using a drybrush over the top.

Question from a beginner that has only painted 28mm models how do you support your unbased large models for painting. I have tried hot glue, tacky putty, and apca glue to try and hold them in place to no success. I have resigned myself to just holding the model in working on, but the repeated handling it rubbing the paint off leading to constant touch ups. Any advice would be welcome. Thank you in advance

There are a couple of ways you can go about it. If you build your model and it's on a base then you can get holders that support larger models, I have an old Citadel handle that takes the larger base sizes and it works pretty well. Alternatively you can magnetize the base and use a holder with a magnet on it, as long as it's strong enough of course. If you can get away with sub assemblies then drilling holes in the joints and pinning them to corks is probably the best option for not touching the model. I guess you still will need to when you go to assemble it, but when the paint is dry it really doesn't come off. Hope that helps :)

What sonic cleaner do you use? I'd like to get my own but I dont know what to look for

Mine is a GT Sonic, but honestly, all of the ones on Amazon are pretty much the same, the names change every few months but I am sure they are all made in the same factory. I use a 3L model and that's a pretty nice size for most things, but there are smaller ones that are less expensive. Just make sure to get one on Amazon just in case you need to return it, you never know!

What do you use to strip the paint off? It's MUCH cleaner than anything I've seen.

The sonic cleaner does most of the work, but LA's Totally Awesome, a concentrated degreaser, is great at getting paint off. Soaking in a jar works but takes a while, the sonic cleaner does the job in 20 minutes or so, really handy for getting stuff clean quickly!

I've been using Medea NuWorld's Paint. It's thinned with some of their thinner, but not much. The paint is airbrush ready and brush ready, so you can go either way. They have all sorts of colors, but for priming I use their Zenith Black and Zenith White. Tau are not robots, though they include a few. Are you sure you are not confusing them with Necrons. Even the battle suits are occupied by a living being.
