I put my tacks in as high as I can reach because I'm 6' so at least anyone shorter than that can't mess with them. I never knew they made brown tacks. I hunt 95% in the afternoon so I only need the tacks sometimes to find my way out. I keep a nice clean trail to my trees stands and believe it or not, the last two years my clean path had puffed up leave piles all over them. I thought it was Turkeys doing it, till one day walking in I saw hundreds of Robins in the woods scrapping up leaves. That's right, Robins. Robins in New Jersey in January and February. So, sometimes you us can't win.

early season i never hunt morning bc i know I'm going to spook deer that are already bedded and have a much higher probability to just sit that area in the afternoon. pre rut/ rut / post rut I've had luck sneaking in at daybreak and seeing the bucks when they get back up to move a few hours later to check scrapes or does that are bedded. I've never really seen a big one going back to his bed unless it was pitch dark and i can't shoot anyway. maybe its because i didn't get there early enough to catch the first light movement or maybe its because i spooked them on the way in with the light while they were on the way back to bed. i just prefer to sneak in when they are bedded and i can see and they cant see my light and hope they get back up or a doe leads them in.

I have spooked lots of deer with lights. That being said, I can somehow see pretty well during dark even with overcast clouds. Most of the time I know my entries and exits well enough from scouting I don’t use markers or flashlights. I always take one in case I need it. I do sometimes need it to see what I’m stepping on but other than that I’m good. My eyes are very sensitive to light and quickly adjust in the dark. It works for hunting but my eyes sometimes hurt and water in the sunlight unless I have good sunglasses.

I use a green light and am usually able to walk by bedded deer. If I’m not smelled. One year I hunted a giant crp field. I watched 3 bucks bed 20yrds from my entry point When I left I walked almost a mile out of the way to avoid them. I wanted to do an experiment. Would those bucks bed there all night? Or get up and move during the night. Next morning, long way around to my stand again. Daylight came and I couldn’t glass a single buck. Around 8:30 I decided to rattle When I did. Not only did the three stand up but two more stood up. Those bucks stayed right there all night. If I would came in like normal. I’m jumping 5 bucks before I even get to my stand. Unfortunately I plucked the string, bounced my elbow off the tree, lost my balance and duff the shot. A neighbor found him in a fence line 3 days later. :(.

I was coming out of a tree just after legal light using a dim red lense headlamp. Thought I heard something but dismissed it. I had an issue with something and got frustrated and turned my white light on. Large deer took off immediately. Found the beginnings of a fresh rub less than 30yds from me where the deer had ran from on my way out. I have since used only red lense for entry/exit.

I say that alot myself because I hunt all public land and shoot mature deer and see some of the guys I know letting 160 inch deer walk because they're only 3 1/2.....That's farming. you cant do that on public or the guy on the next ridge shoots it. I have had to "settle" for alot of mature 130 inch deer because thats what the woods blesses me with that particular year. Last year I proudly shot an 8 1/2 year old(lab tested) 6 pointer on illinois public.

Hey John, you can see white, green or brown tacks during the daytime. Just get a super bright LED handheld spotlight and shine it around. The tacks do light up in daylight and are super visible. I use that method to find tacks on my private land. Another hint is to never put tacks visible from a road. Its easy to drive along with a spotlight and find hunter’s entry trails. Those reflective ribbons with clips are very handy for marking a blood trail. Easy to collect again after the recovery. Much better than marking with surveyors tape. I don’t know if you mark your blood trails but I always do unless I can see where the deer went down, and is laying. The story of his run can uncover unexpected changes in direction and reveal a trajectory you might not have expected. On evening only stands I put tacks on the exit side only cause i don’t need them during daylight. I prefer to put my tacks low so I don’t have to raise my light at all but you are correct, some can get obscured by vegitatoin. I think it makes them harder to spot during the day. At night any tack position is easy to find. I didn’t hear you mention being quiet, I mean real quiet, on the way in. I sneak in, one careful step at a time. It can take me a long time to reach the stand but who cares. I like being outside and listening to the woods. By making a nearly silent entry I”ve had daylight come and found there were deer bedded in sight of my stand. It only works of you can get up the tree silently. I do leave stands in remote locations. Haven’t lost many.

Hey John, I really appreciate all your videos, I've learned more from your videos than anything. I'm a self taught bow hunter and have been at it for about 12yrs now seriously any ways lol, all on public land her in Michigan. Mostly where a grew up in central area north east of Grand Rapids by about 50 miles or so. Only have 1 truly mature buck under my belt but it drives me every year to try to get another one lol. But I feel my biggest disadvantage is my sent control. In the past I haven't been able to financially be able to use sentlok so I resorted to the gimmick spays on the market, but now I'm able to actually start purchasing real sentlok and be able to get my sent control working and figuring it out. Thanks to your videos I Ave a pretty good idea on how to start using and storing my clothing. I did have a question that I'm hoping you could maybe give me some advice on since you happen to he in the Michigan public woods also. I live a little farther north now in the clare area and was wondering if you could give me some advice on what sentlok suits work best for our weather and tips for boot, hip waders, basically a rough idea on what I should start with purchasing and things to add as I go for sent control? Question John - walking through standing corn is usually pretty dang noisy. You're not worried about the noise spooking deer bedded on the edge? You think a visual intrusion is spookier to a deer than an audible intrusion? Maybe because they don't know what's making the noise in the corn (because they can't see it) but they know it's a human walking down the edge?

Evening hunts are the absolute best to kill big deer. If you know where they are bedding and feeding it’s a done deal. Mornings are much too risky in the sense of possibly spooking deer. @@bendrixbailey1430 It's not my rules, it's the DNR's rules. If your stand gets 'stolen' after the DNR says to clean them up, then that's your problem. There's a reasons they put those rules in place, so people won't claim spots year round or get hurt in the offseason climbing on someone's old equipment. I'm not enforcing anything, I'm just saying what the rules are. If someone takes your tacks or tears down an illegal treestand, it's well within their right to do so. What is your take on using dry creek beds (less than 6-8 feet to just a shallow washout that is like a sandy path through the trees and brush) as access routes? I may be wrong, but in several public spots I hunt they seem like perfect routes.... like highways with an off ramp to the ambush spot. Just curious about your thoughts.
@johneberhart40622 жыл бұрын
Dry creek beds are perfect if you can find them without large deadfall trees and branches all over in them. In swampy areas, most creek beds have a lot of stuff in them to climb over. If they are cleaned up in the spring, they would be awesome.

You made the comment about us not coming to Michigan to hunt bucks older than three years old. You said it doesn’t make sense. If we shouldn’t come there then why do you hunt there. Not saying you are doing this but it sure seems like you are trying to keep out of state hunters away from Michigan. And for waders put in a plastic bag not having sent that’s not true. If a deer can smell where you have walked in rubber boots hours b4 they will be able to smell where you had on the waders just from your human scent. If a plastic bag masked our scent we would be wearing plastic bags in the stand.

Are you for real? I live in Michigan and that's why I hunt there. I tell people they are wasting their money to come to Michigan to attempt to kill a big buck because they are so rare on public lands. Plastic bags are scent free and they don't make garments out of plastic because it allows ZERO air flow through it.

Can you elaborate on the milk weed wind checkers? I’ve been using them for years and learned that just because the (insert favorite wind app/channel) says for instance a SE wind. The spot I hunt might mean the wind actually goes through that spot from the South. Or any other number of spots and wind doesn’t necessarily mean that where the wind is coming from for that given spot. Just curious what you mean by technology? Genuinely would like to know…

John uses ScentLok activated carbon technology to hide his human scent. He doesn't pay attention to the wind. So to John, using milkweed for checking the wind is pointless.

John there’s one thing I think you left out that you had in a video a long time ago and I had never heard or seen anybody do it before and I started doing it and I have noticed that it is a game changer I have a thermal monocular that I can scan before I get out of my Tree for my exit I also coming out I have to go through a food source and there’s really no way around it and I’m able to scan that area to to make sure there are no deer on my exit I also use it for my entry

I mentioned a thermal imaging unit for checking for deer before getting out of a tree in a video about a year ago and mine is a Leuopold. I believe I mentioned it in one of the boot videos

Got to say, not a fan of tacks and flags. No one ever takes them down. Littering up the land even more.

One of my areas there is yellow paint (covering previous green paint) on almost every tree for a half mile.. all leading to someone’s ridiculous ladder stand right out in the open in mature timber with zero understory lol

Probably wouldn't be so much negativity if you didn't intentionally take digs at people, throw some lessons out and quit bashing people

John, I have an idea for marking trails on public and it also makes it highly unlikely you will spook deer. I have used it for years... If you have any interest I will share it with you.

"Deer farming" 😂😂. Yeah, I can't stand watching those videos.....two guys in a tree, cameras, no face masks....moving around, pointing, etc. Do that where I hunt, you're going to starve.

This guy is so full of himself, dude kills deer but ain’t none of them giant, “anyone that hunts managed property is the only hunter in the game “ ^^gtfo dude that’s worse than guys with trail cameras claiming deer as their own
