Legend has it Roeper still stays at night fearing that Stitch will crawl out his window and say “Ohana means family.”

"Lilo and Stitch" is an underrated classic. It has great characters, a good story, and expertly-done animation. I still enjoy the film on a regular basis; hard to believe its already been over 20 years since it came out.

I often disagree with Roeper, however I almost always could see where he was coming from. His negative reaction to Lilo & Stitch is perhaps the strongest disagreement I have ever had with the man. Lilo & Stitch is one of the few Disney films that I actually love and do not find overrated.

Lilo & Stitch is a classic! ❤️ I agree with Ebert. Why does Roeper have to be so harsh?

Never missed Gene Siskel more. Who is that wet blanket supposed to be? How can anybody have a bad word to say about Lilo & Stitch?
@speedyboris Жыл бұрын
Let's not forget though, that Gene gave thumbs down to Hercules and Mulan, so it's hard to say whether he would've liked Lilo & Stitch or not.

The Wild to me is not that bad of a film. In fact I’d probably give it a marginal thumbs up. More people need to see it. Not because it’s underrated but because absolutely no one talks about it. Positively or Negatively

Roeper was way off with this one. What a bone-headed critique from someone who I generally respect. I agree with Ebert--no kid is gonna be scared of Stitch. I think the cottage industry of handbags, purses, t shirts, and plushes that has sprung up in the two decades hence has proven that. Stitch is just two steps away from Hello Kitty when it comes to cuteness. And doesn't Disney know it--sales of those handbags, purses, and shirts are HUMONGOUS in Asia especially. As for calling the animation "simple", I have to assume that Roeper was, like general audiences at the time, dazzled by 3D animation where you can see every pore and hair on every character's body. Well, IMO the lushness of the watercolor look of this film has stood the test of time way better than its contemporaries. Shrek is a great flick, but the LOOK of it has aged quite a bit. Monsters Inc fares better, but the human characters definitely suffer. Thankfully they're minimized. But this is such a grand return to the tradition of the 40's animation paradigm that I'm surprised that Roeper wouldn't appreciate it. Good thing Roger did.
