This brings back memories. I used to have this recorded onto an old VHS tape (which sadly got destroyed in a flood in my family's basement). The Worst of 2002 introduced me to Ebert & Roeper, which led to me eventually seeking out the original At the Movies series. I now have my own movie review blog, which I like to think was inspired by all of their reviews, particularly Roger Ebert.

It took a few years, but *Death to Smoochie* did get a cult following eventually. I saw it for the first time a few months ago, and while it wasn’t a masterpiece, I thought it was good, campy fun.

Enough is a truly stupid bordering on reprehensible film in almost every way possible. The truly scary thing is that there are fans of the movie who consider it to be an "empowering" story of a woman regaining her life and getting her "righteous revenge" on her ex-husband...and getting away with it because of "double jeopardy". Such idiots don't understand that double jeopardy would only apply too the theory of the original case, for the second case (and actual murder) they'd be able to not only charge her with aggravated murder (because she carefully planned it all) and she'd get the rope for it.

Enough was on one afternoon while I was flipping through the channels, and when I saw the first abuse scene, I thought, “This is completely unrealistic,” and turned it away. If you listen to stories from actual domestic abuse survivors, abusers don’t just turn on a dime one night and start beating their partners while screaming that they have every right to do so and no one’s going to stop them. What happens a lot of the time is the abuser will use violence during a confrontation or argument, then be regretful afterward. “Oh, baby, I’m so sorry! I don’t know what came over me! I’ll never do it again!” Then the abuse does happen again, and it keeps happening because the target thinks it’s just a rough patch and they can tough it out, or they think other people will brush off their concerns (which sadly is not unheard of as there really lowlifes who don’t try to understand a situation and cut off people with pat suggestions like, “Maybe you’re just not trying hard enough! A relationship is a two-way street, you know.” Thankfully there are people out there who do listen). It’s the same situation with the infamous Family Guy episode “Screams of Silence: The Story of Brenda Q.” That one also showed a distorted depiction of domestic violence which some critics worry will skew people’s perceptions and make things worse for people being abused (“Well, my spouse doesn’t do that to me, so it must not be real abuse!”).

5:54 to 6:00 my favorite savage quote from Ebert on this episode. As for Death To Smoochy, it wasn't that bad of a movie but I don't think Ebert is dumb for naming it the worst movie ever made. And Roeper was wrong about the film gaining no cult following because it sure has gained a cult following over the years. Just shows that the audience and critics always see movies differently.

And the writers of _Juwanna Mann_ should sue every contemporary conservative website writer for plagiarism since all the articles they write on transgender women in sports sound like they were copied directly from the plot of the movie.

Sorry, but I've got a warm spot for Signs and They. I thought They was a throwback to the old '70s horror movies where a female character was menaced by something that's out to get her and that she (and the audience) has no real understanding of because its existence is never explained; think Don't Be Afraid of the Dark and Trilogy of Terror. There's plenty of suspense and creepy imagery in They. And Signs I thought had a good story and good performances by Gibson, Phoenix and Culkin. It suffered a little from lack of logic (the old "why would aliens who are vulnerable to water invade a planet that's covered in it" chestnut), but I still thought it was well made, an exploration of how one family perseveres and triumphs in the face of an unprecedented crisis, and how maybe God _is_ watching over us after all. In terms of image and emotion, Signs and They are scary, thoughtful, gripping pictures. I wouldn't defend any other movie on your list. Except maybe Mothman Prophecies. That one's pretty creepy too, but maybe I kinda liked it because I've always been fascinated by the story of Mothman. But to each his own.
