For those curious, the intro song is "On the Road to Find Out" by Cat Stevens. By the way, I was going to buy the Guild OM-120/140 as I heard elsewhere that the D-120/140 lacked the clarity for finger picking, but your rendition of Don't Think Twice convinced me otherwise. D-120/140 for the win!

I wasn't shopping for a new guitar, but, well, I've had this old Epiphone EJ-160 since high school...Long story short, played and purchased a D-140 with a natural finish a couple days after seeing this video. Sounds great, of course. But the craftsmanship is high quality, too: perfect frets, clean binding, really solid construction.
@EricHaugenGuitar6 жыл бұрын
Welcome to the party! Congrats! These D-140s are a tremendous value. I had my tech tweak the setup and put on 11s now and it plays like butter! How's the setup on yours?
@mikeseder93856 жыл бұрын
It was pretty good out of the box (or, rather, out of that odd-but-cool polyfoam case), but I'll probably do a minor adjustment. Haven't decided whether to switch to 11s like I had on the old Epiphone or stay with the 12s, which I'm kind of digging.

I love that case! So lightweight and yet thoroughly protective. Yeah, the 12s have a lot of punch - you lose a tiny bit of it when you switch to 11s.

I ended up putting 11s instead of the 12s that came on it - plays a bit easier that way. Also, my tech noticed they had a shim under the bridge saddle to jack the strings up higher, he removed that and now it plays quite low and comfortable, still no buzzes :-)

I have one of these (the natural version) and I effing LOVE this guitar. I also own a Martin D-28, and they both compliment each other very, very well. The D28 has a slightly pronounced bass, crystal top end, with a somewhat scooped and focused midrange. The D140 has a pronounced, woody, and somewhat airy midrange with a glassy top end, and present but not overwhelming bass. Both guitars are overall balanced, not having one tonal aspect that jumps WAY out in front of everything else.. but each have their own signature personalities. The D28 works very well for flatpicking and arpeggiated chords while the D140 shines at fingerstyle and strumming. I think the D140 is a more overall usable guitar than the D28 because it's sounds almost as good with flatpicking, single note lines, and arpeggiated chords as the D28....but works WAY better with strumming and fingerstyle than the Martin. IMO....you know. And just because I think it's an important distinguishment to make, you can purchase five D140s for the price of one D28. Let that sink in....... My D140 is flawless. I've literally gone over it with a magnifying glass (I'm serious) and the only flaws I can find are the neck/headstock joint was made at not quite 90° to the neck so it looks a little strange if you stand the guitar up and look at the back of the neck toward the headstock. The neck is perfectly straight and in line with the headstock.....just the slightly visible line where the two pieces of wood were joined is not at a perfect 90°. There also is a tiny, tiny bit of glue squeeze-out above the nut, and on a couple of braces inside the guitar. And I mean tiny amount. None of this is affecting the playability or tone of the guitar. Also, the top isn't bookmatched.....I wouldn't imagine a $750 guitar would be, and I'm not convinced it has any noticeably negative affect on the sound. Everything else about the guitar is absolutely perfect. The back is from a single, quality piece of African mahogany....which has beautiful grain and a nice elegant arch. The sides look fantastic and don't appear to have any unsightly grain anomalies. The top has very straight and uniform grain structure, and doesn't have any weird striping, shading, or other unsightly issues. All the binding and inlays are absolutely PERFECT....no wild lines, gaps, or squeeze-out. The neck and bridge joint are airtight. The neck is straight and the frets are immaculate, although I think it's going to need a light fret leveling and when the guitar is done settling in......welcome to the world of precision construction with organic materials. Also, I think the guitar would probably benefit somewhat from a change in saddle, nut, and bridge pin materials. The gig bag is very nice, also. I can't say enough good things about this guitar. I don't know if I managed to get an exceptional specimen or what, but.....especially at this price....these things should be flying off the proverbial shelves.

Just got the Natural and absolutely love it. For the price, it feels like I stoled it ($450 Factory refurb/new cond, with the case). This is a solid wood guitar with Scalloped bracing, not many guitars for under $1500 that has those features. Closer to a Martin HD-28 and sounds every bit as good (In its own way). Construction wise it is flawless, great neck, perfectly intonated, great action. Well balanced tonally that makes harmonic goodness. I really like the old school ragtime voicing, yet still has plenty of low end if you want to do good ol' bluegrass runs. I'm sold on the African Mahagony, really like tones from it.

A man after my own heart! I have a Guild DV-52 that looks exactly like your D-140, only mine has Rosewood back and sides. I've had it for 20 years and man does it have a rich, warm tone! I've gotten a number of compliments on its sound. I've been jonesing for a Collings D1 but then I wouldn't play my Guild as much and that would be a crying shame. What's your favorite acoustic guitar?

I’m looking to buy my first GUILD! I never play Guild, so I don’t know this brand guitar. I like the dreadnought style guitar. This D140 seems interesting for my first Guild 👍🧐🧐🧐

This sounds fantastic. What model/place of manufacture is this one exactly? Thanx. I'm looking for a medium priced, full size Dreadnaught with a lot of low end and volume.

This is one of the made in China models. I would describe is as "flat/balanced" frequency response - nothing seems too hyped, everything is represented :-)

I just played the OM versions of this line in a store, the OM140 and the OM150ce. The OM140 was the better of the two, and I compared it with s Martin OM18ce and OM28ce, and with Taylor 314, 414 and 614. The Guild held its own for a fraction of the price. The Martins and Taylors were all warmer and had more bass. The Guild was louder, zingy-er and clearer though, with fantastic projection and note definition.. I hear some of the same character in your demo; I think this line tends to have those characteristics. If you like a warm, bassy guitar, this might not be the one for you, but I like it, as I love high-end sparkle and zing.
@EricHaugenGuitar5 жыл бұрын
I think your description hits the nail on the head! Loud, Zingy, Clear, and Defined! I'm hoping that as this puppy ages, more and more warmth comes in.

@EricHaugenGuitar6 жыл бұрын
I think you'd be fine either way - the D-150 might be a little darker due to the rosewood, or maybe the opposite I dunno :-) One is mahogany sides (soft wood) and the other rosewood (harder) - I'm not exactly sure what difference that has on tone or if I'd even notice!

I'm really considering this one, but I'm still a little curious about the low end and dynamics. When you listen to a D-40, it's a beast you are listening to! I wonder how different the D-140 can be from the D-140 (besides the countries they are made). If you could tell me about your feeling about the low end and the dynamics of this guitar, I'd appreciate it a lot. Btw, thanks for this video and the other ones you are playing this guitar, they are great to have a good idea about this nice guitar.
@EricHaugenGuitar6 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean, Caetano! A lot of new guitars lack a little bit of low end warmth compared to some 20-40 yr old broken in acoustic. Mine is still warming up, but I'm quite happy with the even representation of all the frequencies I like. It's not vintage, but it's certainly not thin :-)
@wezleyjackson99183 жыл бұрын
I have the China-made Westerly D-140 (same as Eric is playing here).. I also have an all-solid D45 copy (custom build to same spec. as Martin D45).. The bass response of the Guild D-140 compares favourable to my D-45 copy.. The D-45 is a little more mid-focused and the D-140 more even, balanced and warm.. But the bass response is killer on both.. IMO close to as good as it gan get for any acoustic.. Never heard a USA-made D40 but I imagine the D-140 would hold its own as it is a joy to play and hear..

Cool! You're team Guild too! That mic is actually a Rode NT5 small diaphragm condenser. It's running into an Art Tube MP preamp ($50), and then my Tascam DR 40 field recorder. I EQ it and Compress it a little bit in post.
