Fan of ebikes, this is the first I have seen of someone taking a fast ebike and going through registering for legal road use - fantastic and subscribed. Looking forward to seeing this journey and the end result thanks for posting - great work. Be good to see the costs but if not just seeing how you get there will be good. thanks

Interestingly you said the VIN number should be on the offside in part one but it’s on the near side. I know the video is a couple of years old and I’ve been watching your more recent videos. Not aware of the Ebikes current status of it was ever completed in the end.

Magura has been making eBike brakes for a long time now, originally the MT7e, which was discontinued, and now just the MT5e and MT4e. Plus they are dual pistonm, use waterproof HiGo connectors, and have the switch integrated into the lever.

Hi Andy, can you add the cut off wires to both the tail light and the controller?
@beyondfossil7 жыл бұрын
Can you put the horn inside the main chassis somewhere since its "blooming loud"? It will improve the looks and reduce clutter on the outside (at 8:41 in the vid). I plan to do this on my build.
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+Rotormatic quite possibly but I don't want anything silly like this to cause the MSVA test fail. If they are used to seeing a horn on the outside like every other moped type thing they might query it if it's inside. I'll certainly move it inside after tho!

Andy, Love this thread and your plans to get MSVA approval. How is this progressing? Have you taken the plunge and headed to the inspection center yet ?
@raptorpome25777 жыл бұрын
thank you for doing this vlog as i am looking at doing the same but with a different bike ... why have you fitted indicators they are not required plus are you going to provide a link for all the parts you used...... have you sorted the tires out yet ... has it passed the test
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+raptor pome hi, i fitted indicators as it makes the bike a lot more safer in traffic, have you ever tried hand signalling whilst trying to throttle and ride a heavy electric bike! It's not easy. Parts list will come soon. Test is booked but I moved house so that has taken priority for now. More updates soon. Thanks for the comment.

Andy I was going to buy an ebike like yours prebuilt but after watching your videos I decided it would be better to build. thanks for all the great content, not much of any info on the subject here in central Maine.

+andy kirby I was about to upgrade from 2kw to 5kw but 14kw sounds a lot nicer. Did you get that on alibaba? I can't seen to find anything. There was an 8kw hub motor but it was about twice the size of your hub. Please help out a fellow ebike mad scientist. Cheers.

11kw maximum for A1 class
@erikjonromnes4 жыл бұрын
It’s the battery discharge current that makes the difference in the motor wattage. They do not generally advertise it but the QS205 motor he is using can handle some over current but you need to manage the heat in the hub motor beyond 12kw or so with ferrofluid and HubSink. You will need a safe BMS protected battery that provides the higher discharge and a compatible controller such as the sabvoton150 or 200 depending on your Battery’s nominal discharge. Remember to base these on their nominal discharge ratings and not their peak rating. The peak ratings are for short duration under the heaviest loads. Peak current compatibility is important to consider as well but just don’t confuse the two. Double checking is key bc some sellers will only advertise the peak rating bc it sounds better. They know that once they get your money you won’t want to return the product to China due to the ridiculous return shipping costs. Heck they might even get another purchase out of you to correct the mistake that they will say is your fault for being ignorant of these “normal/typical” industry selling practices.

I am not 100% sure about registering ebike in UK, but here in Germany the kickstand should be self folding as only you push up the bike, check this. p.s. Thank you for mentioning our store in video.
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+Artur Ragulskyi Hi Artur, yes this is what I thought as well, but having spoken to someone who passed an MSVA with this type of stand they said: There is a section in the MSVA manual on prop stands, and B) describes self reclining stands, which as youve found, dont exist. However ,the B) requirement isnt necessary if C) is met, and the stand is able to flip back "following first contact with the ground when the vehicle moves forward as a deliberate act of the rider". This language caused me a bit of confusion at first, but what it basically adds up to is you can pass the test using all those widely available stands that need an effort of some sort by the rider to retract.
@donaldgeissler28647 жыл бұрын
Where did you get the kickstand from ?
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+Donald Geissler this was from eBay sold as a dirt bike kickstand but I modified the bracket, east to do and it holds better than any other stand out there.

How much have you spent on doing this? Would it not be easier to buy an ebike? Also wouldn't you also need to get insurance for it? I know tax wouldn't be an issue-no emissions 😊
@andykirby6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, interesting point however most commercially available ebikes suck in the power department so it wouldn’t be worth registering one. It’s only really worth it if your ebike has 3000W or more.

Nothing personal Andy you're doing a good job but I had to cut this short, I'm turned off by those in higher places making sure you follow their hundred and one commands: it's not really your bike it's theirs. Take care.
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+Steve Donovan sorry to hear that Steve, I surprised by this kind of reaction. I'm literally doing this to have the best of both worlds. We are at a unique juncture in terms of technology right now, to be able to build our own viable and actually simple transport that isn't powered by fossil fuels. I'm not handing my bike over to the authorities as you suggest but I am adding a layer of safety and security so that I can, if I want ride in the middle of the road at speed to get to places quicker without worrying about getting the bike seized. My aim might not be clear, but this is still an Ebike and it will go anywhere an Ebike will by simply taking off the number plate! This is what I mean by having the best of both worlds. Additionally, if you've ever experienced riding a bike with brake lights and indicators it's amazing how much better you are treated by other road users! I don't think I'll ever go back!
@stevedonovan92657 жыл бұрын
I understand Andy. I was turned off once you mentioned the "ball" at the end of the lever as a legal requirement. That's Big Daddy speaking too much for me especially with the power to seize your property. I think the ebike 25kph limit is ridiculous too. The extent that rule-making has increased all for 'your own good' is really for bureaucrats own good securing their lot in life. I think those given the task should set a basic standard of limits that recognizes a meaningful responsibility with the individual and quite trying to protect us from ourselves because they know better. My posting is nothing personal toward you even if you're in agreement with the rule-makers. I wish you the best.
@andykirby7 жыл бұрын
+Steve Donovan yeah I do agree with what you are saying here and I don't agree with the current silly Ebike max speed rule either, the system is out of date. My ultimate goal is to help try and change this by showing the process in these videos. If it inspires more to do the same then hopefully it will help in some small way. It's been an interesting learning process for me either way as some of the things in the manual do make sense from a safety perspective.
@ScrimHyphen7 жыл бұрын
I'll be honest, mate. I'm surprised you're jumping through all these hoops to register it. If it were me I would simply not comply with the laws of how powerful ebikes can be for the road and ride it where ever. Do you think you'll ever be pulled over and fined for riding this? I'm impressed nonetheless, someone has to do this stuff.
@kenny1235027 жыл бұрын
As long as your not being an idiot the cops should usually leave you alone unless you try to ride on the highway. In most countries the legal limit is 20mph on the road, however even with that in the US I have an ebike and i ride all in the street downtown past dozens of cops and noone says anything. Hope that helps, cheers mate!
@ScrimHyphen7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. In Australia the limit is an appalling 25 kph (15mph) and a maximum of 250 watts (presumably, thanks to the big oil lobbists). I think you're right, as long as we obey traffic laws i dont think we'll be targeted.
@ralph17p7 жыл бұрын
It's not just going to be a fine though. Riding without insurance and riding an unlicensed vehicle will mean the bike gets impounded and probably destroyed. You'd get points on your drivers license (6 just for the lack of insurance and possibly others for all the bits that are unroadworthy) and yeah, there would probably be a significant fine on top of that. I think with eBike kits where it still ends up looking like a conventional bicycle you're probably right - but this bike is hardly a below-the-radar high powered ebike. It looks like a motorbike and any traffic cop on a slow day is going to pull him over to ask about the lack of plates / tax disc / insurance etc.
@ScrimHyphen7 жыл бұрын
I agree. You want it too look as much as a conventional bike without sacrificing safety (indicators are essential imo) and I wouldnt wear a motorcycle helmet just a bmx one. Think you're overestimating the penalties a bit. I heard of people riding bikes like the one above, been stopped by police (in Aus) and were able to go scott free.
@lmaoroflcopter6 жыл бұрын
ScrimHyphen penalties are clear as day they are those of riding an unlicenced, unregistered, untaxed vehicle. If Mr test case manages to get off because he caught Mr plod on a really good day I'd not want to bet my home built motorbike on that. Having come of a push bike at 25mph and needed a skin graft on my left arm for the road rash, can guarantee I'd be in all the gear for this. Road rash fucking hurts, but skin grafts are a world of pain and pain in the arse faffing beyond that.

Cheers now we will all soon need to register our e-bikes and be taxed accordingly you really never thought this through the impact it will have on the e-bike or cycling community you Just highlighted to these clowns they can screw us for more money some people cycle due to not having a driving licence e-bikes make that easier I think what your doing is opening the flood gates for dvla to start demanding licences and tougher rules which isn’t good for cyclist or e-bike community your cool though you can drive😡😡😡😡
@lmaoroflcopter6 жыл бұрын
Lucifer you numpty the rules already specify exactly whats legal. Nothing has changed. If you want to build a kit car for road use, you have to get it registered. If you want to build a motorbike for road use you have to get it registered. If you want to build an electric version of either of those things... You have to get it registered, why on earth is this earth shattering news to you and others I've no idea. Literally naff all has changed. He wants to build an electric motorbike, not one limited to 250w and 15.5mph max assist speed that must only assist when peddled.
