This motor was loud below 15mph. This means the magnets inside were loose. Watch how to repair a powerful geared hub motor with loose magnets.
Shoutout to @TheHowtoDad for giving me the gear puller idea. Check out his channel.

1. The small rectangular part on a shaft is a keyway not a clip. 2. The pin in the middle of the circlip pliers is to change from spreading to compressing. (Read the directions) 3. The yellowish PCB substrate (fiberglass) insulation between the armature windings and the stacktooth is for electrical insulation between them. A little bit of chipping on the exposed corner is fine. 4. DON"T USE RED LOCTITE if you ever want to take the motor apart down the road. A torch or soaking in solvent is about the only way to break Red Loctite free. 5. The biggest limiting factor of how much current you can run through the motor is the windings. If you melt the coil wire insulation, or fry a coil wire it's over for the motor. Never run more current through a motor than it is rated to handle. Glad you managed to get it going despite not doing much research into what you were doing.

Thank you for this video,The Company in Illinois referenced you when I asked if they have a video of the breakdown of the hub motor to add grease over time for preventive maintenance.I also fixed a PM motor like you did years ago with loose magnets and the only problem is that the glue can be sort of a spacer if there is too much glue behind them,So I used a starrett micrometer to measure the thickness of the magnets from the back of the disc where they are mounted to the face of the magnet and used as a reference the magnets that were not removed to see if the ones that you repaired are at the same position distance.How far the magnets seat in is critical in that the flux density lines can be a counter emf if one is further away from the outer ring they are mounted to.Since you are helping so many people with this video,I felt compelled to share some of my experiences.Good work,Someone upstairs is writing this all down.Cheers.Joe EE/P.E.

FYI, FWIW - Since I have a Freedom arriving next week (late May 2023), I asked Wired about this via their chat. Here’s their response (other than the pending order, I have no affiliation with Wired beyond being a customer) : “Wired Ebikes On the first run of bikes that we produced, we discovered that the factory that makes the motors for us was very inconsistent in their application of glue for the magnets. Once we discovered this, we had multiple discussions with the manufacturer of the motor, and they have stood behind their motor and are giving us replacement motors for anything in our first run that fails. Furthermore, they have guaranteed us that the Current production run, which is arriving next week will not have that same issue. Any of our customers that have notified us of a motor issue, we have either repaired their motor to make it stronger than what the manufacturer would, or replaced it with a brand new motor.” Fingers crossed -

They use nylon gears because they are quieter. The metal/nylon/metal sandwich gears are physically stronger than pure nylon, and quieter than solid metal, so they are really the best of both worlds. My bike peaks at 3,200 watts with enough torque to throw me off and flip the bike, but I've been running nylon gears for 7,000 miles with no issues so far. I do have solid metal gears, but they are so loud that I took them off the same day. The scuff marks on the magnet shell are from the factory grinding off sharp edges after balancing. Good cautions on the magnets, and if two of them snap together, they will likely crack. I lost two magnets that way. Nice job on the regluing, it looks pretty!

Truly there is little to no evidence of the nylon gears wearing down, even when overvolting, the issue is when temps are not monitored and reaches critical softening/melting temps and you get "peanut butter gear". I bought a bike with all steel gears and would consider nylon gears an upgrade.

If you have a shop vise the freewheel is very easy to remove. I secure the freewheel tool in the vise and drop the wheel on top. You simply turn the wheel counter clockwise like a big ol' bus steering wheel which gives you great leverage. Be sure to put some anti sieze or grease on the frewheel threads to make it easier to remove next time...

That's a 750wat hub motor. You want to try doing that with a 2000wat hub motor the magnets would not crush your fingers it would cut them off. But there is a safe way to dreading the magnets uta a blue paper I forgot the name so when you get stater just slightly liftted you slide this paper in and you can remove by hand. I've done jobs on 2000wat 3000wat and never yes a puller just push down but not to use wheel as it will buckell. I've seen the Chinese do this in factorys and they make it look dead easy. It's conferdance if you don't have it it becomes really hard it's amazing when you no the trick it becomes easy but still watch your fingers. Even a 750wat not be taken lightly as the guy who made video. These videos are good for people who haven't tried jobs like this

Some magnet they don't use glue the magnet it's self ke in place because it's a magnet. The poles will be the same that's what keeps them in place if you do put glue on be sure to keep your magnet the way up as you mix the poles up and that will make your motor go slower strange but true I used to assemble these motor. If these magnets have no glue on do you find that strange on all magnets that shoud tell you not to put glue on

Actually, leaving the surface somewhat rough makes for a better gluing surface than that of a fine surface as it gives the glue something more to grab on to. Imagine climbing a vertical wall: if your fingers can find a crevice then you could cling tighter than you could if the area was smooth with nothing to hang on to. J-B WELD is best applied to clean, dry and somewhat rough surfaces. Sometimes, on certain applications, extra holes are drilled so the glue can get an even better foothold.

@@maximumchargeEV: I'm currently waiting for my new Freedom to arrive and hope I don't have this problem. I have another bike with a direct drive magnet hub motor that does have this problem however but I haven't split it open yet. I either have to pay someone to do it or purchase an expensive 12" puller, that I'll probably never use again, and do it myself. I've serviced the 750 hub motor on my Hemiway Cruiser but only to the nylon gears. Your video was very informative and helpful. TY ~ 🤠 Happy Trails!!!

Mine makes that noise!! I figured motor on the way out. Great video Hey just fyi that's a 500watt motor you can tell when you removed it. It's only couple inches thick. Real 750watt motors are double that thick. It's huge scam 1000s people ripped off.

Local bike shops usually don't work on ebikes at all, it sucks. you have to find a specialized shop, and even then sometimes it's not worth it if the cost of the ebike is so cheap.

Are the magnets being held in place behind that little aluminum ring they seem to be set down inside of
@maximumchargeEV
@maximumchargeEV Жыл бұрын
They are held on by the housing of the motor, the glue, and the pressure of them pressed up against one another. They also are pressed outwards into the housing at speeds above 15mph due to centrifugal forces.

@@maximumchargeEV can't remember which vid, but Justin from grin said In one of their videos that this is a common issue (lack of glue) and that they once had an entire container of motors from bafang arrive with absolutely no glue, all magnets loose, and they had to open up and reglue every single one. Now consider that bafang is the "big brand" and many kits and production bikes are using other chinese knockoffs of the bafang. 🤦‍♂️

OMG man, learn terminology and how to use tools. The snap ring pliers can be changed from pinch to pull by moving the pivot point. The little piece you called a "clip" is a key. Another point is the freewheel sprockets only receive power from your legs, not the motor. So no matter how powerful the motor it will have no effect on the wear of the freewheel when you are working with a hub motor system.
@maximumchargeEV
@maximumchargeEV Жыл бұрын
I noticed I could switch the c clip pliers after haha. Rookie mistake. Still learning. I'm aware of the freewheel mechanics with the hub motor, just wanted a better feeling gearing.

8:35 so it's better to have weak parts so they can break before the main part does... That is such a modern BS engineer thing to say. This doesn't consider that 90% of the people will simply throw away their motor or most certainly entire bike just because one of the planetary gears have ONE teeth broken... This is just a PURE SHAME and I really really hope that it will stop as soon as possible. The most majority of trashed hardware comes from this train of thought : let's just take a practical and sturdy equipment and replace some of the part with plastic or other weak material ! But it's for your own safety of course people, not for money NOOOOOOOOO of course not !!

The fact thatEVERYTHING you buy today will let you down for a 0.10 € part is just a pure shame and almost no government are taking action. A little law against planned obsolescence here and there but just for a very small part of the industry is not enough. Our landfill are overflowing with trash that could be working fine. I hate that.

When you change free wheel to a larger one, it will require longer chain, also might need to change the chain ring if its worn. If Drive train components don’t wear evenly, you can get chain skips and other issues
