I love that the author of can’t spell treason directly thanks travis baldree for inspiration thru legends and lattes. as someone who LOVED those as a “buffer” between heavier books, it’s so nice to have a 2nd series to bounce between that’s just. cute. and wholesome.

Lol nice smelling, handsome, massive man. I think I'm going to start making note of every time a book has a version of a "he was sitting and I was standing but we were eye to eye because he's massive and I'm tiny" scene.

Right now "When the Moon Hatched" is sitting at 4.17 on Goodreads...and I'm so confused....did we read the same book? I am actually a fan of Sarah J. Maas (though she lost me at CC3) because I appreciate her "plotting" and sometimes a girl just needs some simple spice after reading a Sanderson tome :D ! I'm not sure if you said it in a prior video or I saw it in a different review, but "When the Moon Hatched" is like a terrible mashup of Celaena Sardothien, Rhysand, and Fourth Wing all rolled together in one book. Oh, and let's throw some Avatar elemental magic in there for good measure. There was just too much going on, and as a result none of the plot points were properly developed. Dragons that curl up in the sky and become moons when they die? An interesting concept and beautiful imagery, but it was barely explained or explored. There is so much hidden potential. An industrious person with a red pen and a lot of time on their hands could do that book a world of good.

I think I mentioned somewhere that this book felt like C from Throne of Glass and Rhy from ACOMAF mixed together; glad I’m not alone there 😅 I agree about the dragons being such a cool concept. I’m frustrated that it started out self published (not the frustrating part), and when it got picked up, traditional publishing didn’t seem to do much to it. If they’re going to pick something up, I expect them to do more than put their name on the inside, you know? 😅

I am currently reading When the Moon Hatched and am on page 229. So far, I am loving it! It has lots of world building, historical information and lots of Fae folks/creatures. This book is a page turner which is unusual for a 690 page book. It is not your typically told story which I find refreshing. My imagination has been awakened and I am grateful for it.

That’s great! I’d say I got frustrated with it more as it went; the creation myth, and the initial start, were things I was on board with, but it went in a direction I didn’t love as it progressed. I hope that won’t be your reading experience though, especially given how much you’re enjoying the beginning!

much like Fourth Wing (which I read in its entirety), When the Moon Hatched felt in the similar taste category...I borrowed it, tried 50 pages and did not feel bad about putting it down. There is an audience for it, it's not me, and I didn't want another Fourth Wing situation where I felt like I wasted my time and energy to see the hype. I would be interested how you feel about "Spark of the Everflame". I've seen that one hyped just as much. At this point, I think I've learned if a Romantasy is hyped and hit mainstream and normie readers, I will not enjoy it.

I've just picked up WTMH. I think I got it on a $2 kindle special months ago when it was already like, "Hey, I'm here and everyone is talking about me"--and dragons. But the first chapter and I'm already perturbed by the inconsistency of narration and internal monologue. Maybe I'm too old for books like this compared to when I was a teenager and devoured anything that filled that yearning hole in my middle? I don't know.

I'm happy your video came up in a recommendation - your ability to critique elements of stories is a nice change from the trend to recommend a "buy your own adventure by choosing tropes" that I've seen in fair number of reviews lately. If you haven’t read it already, I recommend The Black Witch by Laurie Forest. It has a ton of lore with the different cultures and creatures, like the Lupine shifters, elves, Fae, Selkies, and there’s even dragons. I’m currently reading the second one in the series which people said was the downfall of the series, personally haven’t found that to be the case, but it’s one of those books that meanders while we get to know the characters and their own backstories and issues they have going on. I haven’t actually cried, but a lot of that type of stuff is really emotional. And it still has an overarching plot. The writing is a lot better than I expected. It’s not the most perfect thing ever, but I really enjoy her descriptions, humor (Diana is my absolute favorite character for this), and how the characters interact and develop. Also talking about pantsing, and now I’m wondering if the books I’ve read where the last 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 was super disappointing, not what I wanted or expected at all, did not like it were novels that the author didn’t plan out. I’ve read a few like that this year and they just take such a weird turn, and I’m just like ok but why is this happening, what are we doing? Two of them are The Infinity Courts and This Dark Descent. And Infinity Alchemist, but then I didn’t like that one for various reasons before the weird twists started happening

man I genuinely like the ACOTAR series and Fourth Wing and I still hated When the Moon Hatched. I think there were some cool things in there (Nee is my fave character lol) but it's unbearably written. I agree that the dialogue is TOO modern, but that combined with the OTT florid descriptions just doesn't work. Fourth Wing actually works so much better than this by being more sparsely written, if that makes sense. so at least the dialogue goes along with it. also the FMC. part of what I really liked about ACOTAR was that Feyre was not just snarky, she was legitimately wounded by the world, and she would sometimes be legitimately unpleasant. the protag in WtMH is like annoyingly snarky, like she delivered so many lines as if she was expecting applause and reaction gifs. again, combined with how OTT the descriptive writing is, it just makes the book even worse. idk! I have a lot of thoughts too but none of them are positive lol. and I DO really like fantasy romance, even the ones people like to swipe at

I just finished „When the moon hatched“ and I can’t put into words how annoyed I was by the writing. There were so many words to describe so little things to then not go into details for very interesting things. Tell me more about the dragons and how the characters enchant them, how did Rave end up being an assassin, why is there a huge wall in the centre of the world and why is the Gore build into it? So many cool and interesting things, so much potential but instead we get the constant inner thoughts of the characters that are totally unnecessary. The inner ice lake?! Wtf! It this shades of grey and Anastasias inner goddess all over again??? Why are the characters so one dimensional? Why do they not openly talk to each other? Why are there so many plot holes? The whole book is one big mess. And don’t get me startet on Raeve. I really wanted to grab her by the shoulders and shake, shake, shake her! She is one of the most obnoxious, childish, selfish characters I have come across in a book! Uhhh I really hated her!

@@katanabluebird I’m sorry you don’t like the title but give this book a chance. It’s a fun cozy read with some action and great characters. Everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I definitely can say confidently that it was a lovely read. It makes me excited for the next book. ☺️
