I'm really glad you spoke candidly about Ship of Destiny. I felt pretty astounded that of all the many, many videos I'd watched about how great people thought the Liveship Traders was, only one other person mentioned that horrendous ending. I've never felt so disturbed, betrayed, and angry about a book before. I have Fool's Errand on my shelf to read, but I feel so put off it may take me a while to get round to it.

I hope you enjoy Fool’s Errand! I was bummed with the ending Ship of Destiny, not because of what was explored, but with how it was explored. I think SPOILERS: the little details were bothersome to me, like giving the ship his eyes, when that’s the ship she’s going to be on for most of the rest of her life. It felt like pouring salt on the wound (and that’s just one detail; there were a lot of other things that all piled up that I didn’t care for)

When you were talking about a hangover from reading Fullmetal Alchemist it brought to mind how I felt recently after finishing the First Law Trilogy. I felt emotionally exhausted. To the point that I've decided to take a break from Abercrombie's work. It just is so intense and the emotions kicked me so hard. I still don't know if that was a positive or negative thing lol. Also, I have found another reason to avoid Robin Hobb's books, sadly. But as always I really enjoyed your video. ❤

Finally someone else who enjoyed Liveships but not the direction of the third book! I share a lot of your overall feelings. I still think the trilogy is masterful in a lot of ways but I really struggled with the tone the finale took and how absolutely awful things were done to the characters for what felt like the sole purpose of making it "more realistic." If we're going to go there, then I want the character affected to have more processing time after. I felt like that was kind of glossed over in the aftermath and I'd personally rather see more of their recovery journey and fortitude than the pov musings of the one who did it. A book that I felt did it better (at least to my tastes) is Daughter of the Forest by Juliet Marillier.

The only book I remember having a book specific hangover for (hangovers normally come from reading a lot of books in a short span of time) was Pet Semetary by SK. I have never experienced emotion the way I did with that story, and it wasn’t your standard “oh I’m sad” or “oh I’m angry.” It was like soul deep. I’m honestly afraid to try anymore SK for this reason.

I cannot tell you how affirming it was to hear your review of the Liveship Traders series. I have felt so at odds hearing all the positive reviews when the negatives outweighed the positives, for me, by so much. I generally have a hard time getting through Robin Hobb's books. I enjoy the stories, I enjoy the world, and I enjoy many of the characters, but Hobb is a master at having her characters gaslight the living hell out of each other, and it gives me massive anxiety to read sometimes haha. Fitz and Althea are often maligned by other characters for not being okay with being treated like crap. I usually end up feeling fairly frustrated by the end of her series.

About Liveship Traders: I really didn't like some of the things in that trilogy but I love some other aspects of it. I also had problems with the conclusion and the fates of some characters. Still, I prefer Tawny Man and Farseer because to me it still feels the less dark of the books (not counting rain wild chronicles). I still love the series overall but I certainly have a lot of complains. I read Defensive Baking and Nettle and Bone and enjoyed both, but my preference seems to be Kingfisher's fairy tale retellings like The Seventh Bride and The Raven and the Reindeer. Will you try those in the future?

I had many similar gripes with the Liveship Trilogy. Especially Kennit’s character and the way that whole situation was handled. I will say that Farseer ends perfectly, and that both Tawny man and Fitz & the fool deliver more satisfying conclusions to their stories. It’s entirely possible to read the series while excluding both liveship and rain wild. I think liveship is at least recommended reading to get some lore but rainwild is entirely unessential.

So I read Liveship first. I eventually enjoyed them once it finally started moving. I found the end of all of the eventual character arcs fairly disturbing, one incredibly so but cant talk without spoilers. But in summary, great character work but some major story/plot issues. I have since read Assassin's Apprentice which was a complete meh. Fitz was just not interesting, the side characters bland and Hobb musr like writing whiny kids. Everything I liked about Liveship - gone In both, she brings up a lot of very dark things that are completely glossed over which is really too bad.

Thank god someone is saying this about Ship of Destiny. It ruined the series for me retrospectively. I agree authors must be free to put some pretty awful things on page but I just didn’t see this one as justified or necessary, and agree everything after it was just one wrong turn after another, to the point where this one plot point ruins every other character you’ve grown attached to for 2 1/2 very long books in addition to the two directly involved.
@ebnovels
@ebnovels Жыл бұрын
I think I was most disappointed in the fact that it then felt like the one character’s entire point in the series was to become the victim to the other character, and then we SPOILERS magically take away the pain of the “encounter” so that we have a nice happily ever after in the epilogue. That, along with many other things, didn’t sit well with me personally. I appreciated the intent (in particular, the way people rarely believe victims, the cycles of violence, etc) but the execution was not handled, imo, very well. Obviously other people do connect with it or think it’s handled well. It’s all subjective of course, and at the very least, I respect what I believe Hobb was trying to do.

Not sure if you are aware, but sexual recidivism is disturbingly high, especially involving children. In America, we release these monsters into the general public and within few years, they commit again. What Hobb wrote is not something exaggerated. We tend to show more mercy to these monsters than to the general public.
@ebnovels
@ebnovels Жыл бұрын
Not sure if I’m aware? Why do you think I felt it was important to give people that information? It’s BECAUSE sexual assault and rape are so prevalent, and it’s either something that has happened to someone, or is something they live in fear of, and perhaps don’t want to read about or relive.
