I finally got it done after days struggling with the cysts section. First I want to thank ebontis for making this guide. Second I want to point out that I was stuck on the cysts piece for so long because I wasn’t understanding why the game wasn’t allowing me to switch the cysts missions at the bird in two locations. What I found , and sorry if it’s said in the video, but you must progress through the alone in darkness quest far enough that it makes you visit each of the different cyst locations. I had already redone them multiple times prior and found the cysts for those that allowed me. 3. Tbe game allows you to do the cysts repeatedly before even beginning most of the khvostov questline which makes it even more frustrating because you’ll end up redoing a lot of the same places and cysts quests. I don’t want to say it was frustrating but it’s one of the most frustrating questlines I’ve experienced beyond just collecting those materials in d1 for the exotic swords lol.

FOR ANYONE STUCK WITH/AT 16 MOTES OF LIGHT! I read a few people posting about putting these in your Vault, then running the Overthrow in the Blooming to have the Taken Meatball spawn in again once you beat the Tier 3 overthrow.. Well, i JUST did this, and it worked like a charm! Got the 16th mote, put them in my Vault, ran to the Blooming, ran overthrow until the final Taken Meatball spawned in, beat it, and then it dropped the "Mote of Primordial Light". It does not drop out from the chest, like where the Engrams and Ergo Sum word and Glimmer do, it auto drops to you. Best of luck Guardians! 😎👍

My exotic mote dropped from boss in impasse and not the meatball. I think it has everything to do with the order you defeat the bosses in each region. I was in same situation where I had 16 motes and kept redoing overthrow in Blooming hoping the meatball would spawn because everyone saying the exotic mote has to drop from the meatball. Someone suggested I look at the WASTELAND WARRIOR triumph and check to see if I defeated each boss in each region. I had defeated all but one boss in impasse. So I defeat him thinking I’d have to go back to blooming and defeat the meatball…. But nope, Boss at impasse dropped the exotic mote I needed.

All required Triumphs completed. All 9 bosses slain. All Motes (16) recovered. Meatball slain. nada. Just did another in The Landing. Nada. There is obviously a glitch...maybe it might get fixed in the upcoming update. Anyhoo, this is an excellent guide vid by Ebontis, as ever! GGs++ ...a lot of editing went into this one! Cheers!

@K2shadowfax go put those 16 motes in your vault and head back to the Blooming . Run Overthrow until that Taken Meatball spawns. After you beat the meatball, it should drop for you. This is exactly what I did to get it to finally drop. It does not drop from the chest, it auto drops to your character. I wish you luck!

Watched many guides but this one got me the Khovstov Exotic and it is worth it. Love this gun. As a causal player, it took me a week of grinding to finally get it. There is a glitch where the last boss on the Blooming doesn't drop and I found after three attempts was to go to orbit and redo it. It's a pain but worth it believe me. Racked up close to 1,800 kills in a few days. I don't take it off. It just works so well. If you do the grind and at the chest to finally get the exotic version but doesn't seem to open, just slowly go around the chest until you see the option to open. Was on the left side of the chest for me. I almost broke my controller before I figured it out. LOL!!

I am at the cyst part. I never realized the cyst nodes have to be discovered and unlocked. Some of the cysts are kind of annoying. Like the sword one. I had to do it three times because I kept getting disoriented and if you go to the end you lose the hive sword so you can’t open that one section to get the cyst. I have three left. And I’m sure I’ll get stuck on finding that last boss.

I also realized from the video it’s 9 bosses. Not sure why I thought I just had to kill 3 of them. I’ve yet to see the meatball. The irony that the meatball causes when this was the same boss that caused people grief back during forsaken for the thorn quest via gambit. That boss is cursed.

E! What a grind. Finally finished it all, I was in your guide constantly, over and over again. Thanks again for all of your efforts! Had trouble getting the chest to open in the end. I had everything! Had to return to the room twice and play with positioning. It would finally open, but ONLY by approaching the left side. Crazy...

Just PSA: Don't do it in one day you will be frustrated, if you tired, stop playing, focus on one task at the time, very easy to distract to do all in one in the area but if you can you can, if can't don't push it, game should be fun but "Bungie" apparently know how to piss off the player and their employee (by firing them). This has to be the longest most drawn out quest Bungie has ever done. All I can emphasise is BEFORE you leave that Boss area make sure you get that hidden key. Go into your triumphs, the pale and then secrets and track one man’s trash. Now you won’t miss the key and have to rerun an area bc you gave up and left. Some areas the key is not in the exact location but it’s indeed in that general area at the very least. As always another wonderful guide from Mr Ebontis can’t say I’d still be playing Destiny without his guides.

For those stuck with 16 motes: if you’re 100% sure that your missing one is from Koftiks, as others said, place your 16 motes in vault, go spawn him again AND make sure you’re directly UNDER him when he is dying. I got stuck here also, had to kill him 3 times, first I went back to tower after no mote, third time I waited from the second time for OT to spawn again, but the trick was to place myself under him as he was exploding. In regards to the cistern missions. I would have the same 3 appear on my map,but when I'm actually running on the map there's another bird offering a different one. Make sure to do those also.

Good, helpful video. I did get stuck with only 16 motes, but I watched another video that said put them in the vault, play Overthrow in Blooming until Meatball appears as level 4 boss. It's not guaranteed, but it did work for me.

Agree on prior quality comments, great vid, ty. If your first time through, make sure you break the debris in that final stage BEFORE you lose the sword. I finished it, hadn't gone through the last section, had ditched the hive sword and couldn't resummon. Had to restart (didn't need to complete, just through first room) ;(

On the slim chance anyone sees this comment, the Chest has a 'semi-bug'' and it won't open UNLESS you go to it's Left Side (Left side when looking out to the open sky) So only on 1 of the 4 sides will the chest actually show the '/interact' icon.

Like a lot of players, I have only 16 motes of lights, even though the triumphs show that I've found all the chests and defeated all the bosses. Some on reddit are suggesting it's Koftiks (the taken sentinel boss), though returned to the game, is still bugged, and needs to be replayed. I tried that, but I still didn't get the mote. Someone else suggested vaulting the 16 motes, then fighting the meatball. That didn't work for me either. Someone else suggested replaying all the bosses, saying that the triumphs info is also bugged. But that's problematic, as they spawn at random. Also, having to replay them all is a PITA, especially since there's no guarantee it'll work. And this exotic mission is already too long and tedious. Also, you have to play each level until whatever boss randomly shows up. Bungie needs to either fix the triumph/boss bug, or just gift players having this issue a mote. And before any D2 cultist/apologist complains: No, I'm not looking for, asking for or expecting a handout. But players shouldn't have to replay the fights, just because of bugs in the game. BTW, I'd be content with the devs simply fixing the triumph info, so I'd at least know what boss I had to refight. Bungie should compensate us; we shouldn't have to accommodate them.

I was going to post it on Bungie's forum, but too many people there get really triggered, nasty and insulting anytime anyone posts anything they consider in the least bit critical of Bungie or Destiny 2. The hell with freedom of expression and personal opinion. I learned the hard way to avoid like the plague posting on the forums.

I had this same issue. Here's the fix that worked for me. Store your motes in your vault and then go beat the meatball. It should drop the exotic mote.

Great guide but according to my lost in the dark quests I have 6/6 cysts opened. But for the life of me I don’t see aerial ace one. Every time I go to the bird it just takes me to another in darkness cyst I know for a fact I’ve seen it on my map but I can’t seem to get into it?? Ignore above, I managed to get it activated. But yeh got my exotic and this mission is exhausting as hell but it’s done. Thanks Ebontis for the great guide. Made it very simple to understand.

I need only one more thing to get both the legendary and exotic Khvostov, and that is the Lost Encryption Bit from the Searing Light. I have run solo and with a fire team, I have run the cyst and the inverted cyst. I have completed it in under four minutes. And as yet, I cannot see the rubble pile to complete. What might I be doing wrong? BTW, you have some of the absolute best videos on these subjects, keep up the good work!

Good guide. Would say it were great if you had said you need to get the encryption bits as you clear each Cyst. Just finished them all to catch up to you and now I find out I have to go back and do them all again.

The lost encryption bits are not always in that location. Mine Slayer Cyst encryption bit was in a cave close to one of the crystals you have to destroy. I believe it may be relative to where the big boss is killed

I had the legendary rifle and the final mote of light but the golden chest still wouldn't open. I figured out you need a primary slot open but also the legendary version of the rifle needs to be unlocked for dismantling even though you don't dismantle it. Confusing. Then I was able to open the golden chest. Thanks for the guide!

Awesome guide! Bungo is super slimy for just making you replay activities over and over... just to get something new. They already recycled and reskinned areas. The grind gets worse and more expensive with each "expansion"

Read last week's Bungie news about it. Basically if doing these in all three sections doesn't drop, just go to orbit and reattempt.

For the people that can’t get the smokering darkness cyst to show up: finish your in the darkness quest but dont grab a new one, it should show the bird to change the cyst type then
