今回もご視聴誠にありがとうございます。
エンジンの調子が悪く、お預かりしたXLH883の修理事例をご紹介します。
症状としては、綺麗にふけあがらず、アイドリングもばらつき、最終的には片肺になってエンジンが止まってしまう。といったものです。
お預かりして、症状を確認したところ、確かにアイドリングが軽やかではなく、黒煙がもくもく出ています。明らかに濃い症状。
ガソリンが濃い、薄いが原因で不調が起こっている場合、まずキャブのセッティングを疑いがちですが、今まで問題なく乗れていたのであれば、セッティングがそんなにずれることはありません。それ以外の故障の方が可能性は高いです。
ガソリンが濃い場合は、比較的診断は簡単です。燃料が濃くなる原因はそんなにありません。チョークの不具合か、二次的に燃料が供給されている。キャブレターの中のジェットが緩んで外れた。キャブレターの中でどこかしらクラックが入ったくらいでしょうか？
通常の使用方法で考えると、チョークか二次ガスあたりが可能性が高いです。そんなわけで、チョークから確認しましたが、戻し忘れもなく、しっかり閉まっている様子なので、二次的にガソリンが供給される可能性のある、燃料コックを点検。原因としては、負圧ホースからガソリンが供給されているのが原因でした。
負圧コックは、エンジンが回転して負圧が発生すると、燃料コックが開いてキャブレターに燃料が供給される仕組みです。コックの中のダイヤフラムというゴムが切れて、そこから燃料が流れてしまっていたのだと推測されます。
この現象は、ハーレーに限らず、国産車でも起こりえる現象です。4気筒の場合だと、負圧を２番シリンダーからとっていることが多く、どんなにセッティングをしても、２番だけなぜかプラグがかぶるといった場合、今回のような原因の可能性があります。
故障診断は、構造をしっかりと理解したうえで行うことが大切です。とりあえずキャブを開けてみよう、点火時期をいじってみようでは、根本的な原因が見つけられず、かえって難しくしてしまう可能性があります。何か手を付ける前に、症状をしっかりと見極め、なぜ今回のような症状になっているかをしっかり考えてから診断することが大切です。

Here is an example of an XLH883 repair that was brought to us because of a problem with the engine.
Symptoms are that the engine does not start cleanly, idles unevenly, and eventually stops with one lung. The engine would eventually shut down due to one-lung.
When we received the car and checked the symptoms, we found that the idling was indeed not light and black smoke was coming out. Obviously, the symptom is thick.
If the problem is caused by the gasoline being too thick or too thin, the first thing we tend to suspect is the carb setting, but if the car has been running fine up to now, the setting will not shift that much. Other malfunctions are more likely.
If the gasoline is thick, it is relatively easy to diagnose. There are not many causes of thick fuel. It is either a faulty choke or a secondary fuel supply. A jet in the carburetor has come loose and come off. Is it about a crack somewhere in the carburetor?
Considering normal usage, it is most likely around the choke or secondary gas. Therefore, I checked the choke, and since there was no forgetting to put it back and it seemed to be firmly closed, I inspected the fuel cock, which could be a secondary gasoline supply. The cause was that gasoline was being supplied from the negative pressure hose.
The negative pressure cock is a mechanism that opens the fuel cock to supply fuel to the carburetor when the engine is running and negative pressure is generated. It is assumed that the rubber diaphragm in the cock had broken off and fuel was flowing through it.
This phenomenon can occur not only on Harleys but also on domestic cars. 4-cylinder cars often get negative pressure from the No. 2 cylinder, and no matter how well you set up the carburetor, if the No. 2 cylinder is somehow plugged up, this could be the cause of the problem. This may be the cause of the problem.
It is important to understand the structure of the carburetor before diagnosing a problem. If you just try to open the carburetor or tweak the ignition timing, you will not find the root cause and may end up making it more difficult to diagnose the problem. It is important to assess the symptoms and think carefully about why the symptoms are as they are before doing anything to diagnose the problem.
