For years, I have resisted the idea that I needed a dedicated artificial light source to charge my solar-powered watches (which are all Casio "Tough Solar" watches, by the way). Anyone who has a Citizen "Eco Drive" watch or a Seiko solar-powered watch OR one of these Casios has probably wondered if everyday exposure to normal light conditions would be enough to keep a watch going strong with a healthy battery. And, in the past, I've thought there was absolutely no need to buy a special light just for charging watches. I saw a CoolFire brand light a few years ago for about $40 and I thought that was just an unnecessary expense. So... what changed my mind?
The truth is, I have such a large collection of Tough Solar Casio watches (including G-Shock, Edifice and Oceanus watches) that it's difficult to give them all a consistent dose of light through normal usage. So I decided to give one of these solar-powered watch chargers a try. Instead of getting a CoolFire (or is it Cool Fire?) device, I found a basically no-name product on Amazon, currently available at this link: www.amazon.com/dp/B0CB7DMLJW/
So, why did I prefer this option? Price was a factor. It was only about $15 so even if I didn't like it I wouldn't be too disappointed by this choice. However, I decided I like it a lot. I like the fact that it has both a high and a low setting, with the high setting producing more than 40,000 lux and the low setting producing about half that much light. That means the low setting will produce very little heat, and I prefer that. Also, on either setting, this USB-powered device will automatically shut off after 8 hours. I like that, because I can leave it alone at any time (including overnight) and not have to remember when to turn it off. In all of the information I found about the CoolFire device, I didn't see anything about an automatic shut-off.
The CoolFire version at Amazon (This link: www.amazon.com/Coolfire-Charg... ) is said to use "multiple UV-free LEDs" but I'm also told that LED lights in general produce very little UV light, so I'm inclined to believe that the one I bought is also using UV-free LEDs.

I thought I was bad. I have about 110 watches. You turned me on to the G-Shock Squares and that was dangerous.

I bought the same charger as you on Amazon. I also felt the same way as you. I didn't want to spend $40 dollars for a charger when I could just open the blinds and expose my watches to the sun. But when I found a charger for $15 dollars on Amazon I decided to buy it. Great charger for those cloudy days when you need a watch charged. Great video by the way.

My preferred method is to use a generic articulating desk lamp that will fit any standard E26 bulb. This has a few advantages over a dedicated charger if you have multiple watches: 1) You can adjust the intensity/area by simply moving the bulb closer/farther to the watches. I can usually fit 6 or 7 watches under a single bulb and still get excellent charging. 2) The bulb can be easily replaced without replacing the entire unit. 3) The lamp can be used as a regular desk lamp when you're not using it to charge watches. A dedicated charger is still more efficient for single watches, and the automatic shutoff is nice.

Makes sense needing one of those for a collection like that. I always make fun of my wife when she charges her Apple Watch so I can’t get one of these for my solar powered watches lol

I’ve tried using a torch but with the rounded G shock straps that curve you can’t sit a torch on top so have to lie both sideways or set up some kind of thing to have the watch face up, my torches are too narrow to stand upright and put the watch on top facing down, just wouldn’t work, one of these type chargers is definitely the answer for me.

I got one of these a few months ago as well. I kinda love it. Its a very fast way to charge solar watches. Especially a used one from ebay that's been in a drawer for months or years and the batteries need some deep charge reconditioing.

Great video, Greg! 👌 I'm in the same boat as you - Once looked down on the idea of needing a charging device!... But now with so many watches to wear (and committing one whole week at a time to one watch), it's getting harder. I reckon I'll pick one up! Thanks for rundown 🙏

Interestingly both of my gshocks required charging yesterday and I thought that exposing them to the direct sun UV light for this much time will actually damage resin after some years of charging. this is interesting device, basically wireless charging pad

Great video as always! I recently picked one up as well for similar reasons, and have been using it regularly to keep some of my lesser worn solars topped off. Just wondering: what are your most worn “beaters,” which you use for work?

You should mark that Video as satire, because that's what it is. Solar watches are a bit like mechanical watches, they're fine if you wear them constantly and don't have too many of them. Otherwise the maintenance (aka keep them running) turns into a hassle. That video is a good reminder why I stick to normal battery powered watches, I rather change the battery every few years (or decades) depending on the watch, usage and batt type of course. Functionality of non solar watches is usually better anyway, 'nuff said.

Solar watches are very good, until you get too many lol. I do similar recharge witha 10$ rechargeable lantern. My only worry is if the intensity could damage the solar cell or change the dial color on dial. Cheers from Bolivia!!

You have your collection in watch boxes. Cant you just change the lighting in a room to florescent lighting (office lighting) and bring your collection into the room to charge by light?

I buy glass tempered screen protectors for my smartphone, and they come with a LED UV light that tempers the glue used to install them. I have used those lights to charge lume, but not watch. By the way your description says low UV but... the product description you linked explicitly says it's UV: "The UV Light charger have 2 levels of brightness light power output, 20,000+ Lux and 40,000+ Lux optional, Keep stay on best status and well distributed lights as sunlight to charge the eco watches." So... someone is confused, I dunno who. 😂 Anyway, I never thought of trying the UV tempering lamp I have for the screens to try and charge my Casio Waveceptor, but I guess it's worth a shot.

Yeah on that product I see no indication of "low UV" 😂 Thing's straight from China man, I wouldn't assume they're all the same... I dunno you could be right, just... a word to the wise!

I think the Amazon description is a typo or a bad translation. Any time I have seen an LED light which is made to output UV light it’s designed for that part of the spectrum. Something this cheap wouldn’t be likely to output anything but a narrow part of the spectrum, far away from UV rays. I also have a small UV flashlight and there’s a very specific way it lights up glow-in-the-dark objects or things which are also affected by black lights. This charger doesn’t do that.

@@GoodTimekeeper Welp... like I said, the light that comes with my screen protector was very cheap, but says it's using UV cured glue... maybe there is also some glue that cures using just bright light. Don't know.

Also, the write-up text on Amazon is the only place where UV is mentioned (only once). It’s nowhere else on the illustrations and nowhere on the actual packaging of the device.

Converting electricity to light and then back to electricity by solar is very inefficient. Maybe it's better to put the watches in a dark place, where they go into power save mode?
