My thoughts: Satella is either Emilia's mother or an older Emilia who travelled back in time 400 years (since return by death is an ability based on going back through time, this seems possible). Something bad happened to the Subaru she knew in her youth, perhaps he sacrificed himself for her, which is why she summoned the Subaru we know to the present. This explains why Satella loves Subaru and why she gave him return by death. It was so that what killed her Subaru won't kill our Subaru. As for why Satella killed Emilia when he told her about return by death, it could be that as the witch of envy, she's immune from the continuity of time, so anything that happens to her as Emilia has no effect on her as Satella. Kind of like Heroic Spirits in the throne of heroes vs when they're summoned. Or like Mirai Nikki instead. Satella also knows that Subaru will reset anyway whether through suicide or Puck after she kills Emilia, so even if Satella isn't immune to continuity, she'll be brought back with the reset. The reason Satella came to the sanctuary is because she was pissed Subaru had told anyone about return by death. She also wants to teach him a lesson by killing the people he cares about. Roswaal's gospel is clearly the other true one.

Reason being thematically it wouldn't make sense as we see Emilia being miss treated and attacked because people think she's related to the witch of envy. If she was the witch of envy then that would mean those actions weren't unjustified against her.

Hmmm but time travel theories generally break the plot, because the create plenty of plot holes. We all know that Satella wasn't compatible with the authority of Envy, which caused her to form an alternate persona. That means Satella wasn't envious of anyone in the first place. I think the authority allows someone to go stop time and see the future, and maybe Satella saw the future where a boy that looks like Flugel fell in love with a different girl. This triggers her alternate persona, causing chaos in the world until she was finally sealed. Her alternate persona was extremely jealous of Emilia, probably causing her to change appearance and look and sound just like Emilia, so that this Subaru, who looks like Flugel, will fall in love with her because she looks just like Emilia. She's the kind of girl that always think "I want to be her" and stuff. That's my assumption

Going off on a limb here and assuming that because Satella loves Subaru(For whatever reason) return by death is her way of not only protecting him, but herding him towards some end goal Maybe one in which she can return and be with him. She won't prevent Subaru from helping those he cares about. She won't even prevent him from foiling her own cultists. The only thing she actively prevents is letting others know about the ability. This could be for a variety of reasons, but two that stick out to me are: other people learning of her, and her and the ability may somehow compromise her plans, like "If I tell you what's going it happen, it won't happen". The other is simpler. Her insane obsessive love to her is symbolized by the bond she forced on Subaru. She doesn't want anyone else to so much as know about it. This is all taking Satella's words at face value, assuming she does actually love him. I also have some suspicion it's not that simple. We shall see

If i had to guess why Satella is here, it would be because Subaru repeatedly saying about Return by Death, even tho it had no effect in the tea party, it probably had an effect in real world. Subaru generated tons of miasma that it temporarily took control over the vessel that is Emilia. I doubt that tho, if that was the case, to prevent this Subaru would have to return by death before tea party, would that reset the vow? And if he woke up after the tea party, he would have to find a way to clense Emilia from the miasma or something like that.

And for my theory about Satella’s appearance, the first thing I can think of it’s that, because Subaru told Best Girl about Return by Death, she appeared (Satella’s pro’lly just envious lol). And when she was heading to the mansion, I thought of what Best Girl said, that “Satella only cares about Subaru, and it was his choice to use her powers to save everyone”. And then, I realized: what if Satella is so obsessed with Subaru that he wants to kill everyone in the mansion and change his checkpoint, then he’ll lose almost everyone he loves and only have Emilia and her? But that’s just a theory, a Re:Zero theory! (Godamnit)

Idk if I'm thinking too deeply here but Perhaps the eerie choir "call of the witch" noise... thing... (I really dont know what to call it tbh) represents the scent of the witch, since we obviously cant smell, it uses audio cues to represent it instead? And then it gets more intense and eerie depending on how strong the witches scent is, and that's why when satella showed up it was really fucking intense?? Yeah I havent really formulated this theory properly but perhaps it could mean something other than just making the hairs of our necks stand up?

Thanks Echidnut for another awesome review! Again, I look forward to your analysis videos just as much as each episode, so, it's just icing on the cake. I've got a theory, since I'm an anime only viewer: Since Emilia was missing when Subaru woke up, and we've never seen Satella in-person up until now, could Emilia somehow have been possessed by Satella's magic? We only know, up to this point, that Emilia has had a very traumatic past and most-likely caused some horrible event to happen to her people, that she either can't face, due to PTSD, or some effect of the magic that she used. Or, that really is Satella and she appeared because Subaru revealed Return by Death to Echidna and that was never allowed. So, she felt the need to make a very serious impression upon him about how her terms work. MAJOR FLEX! Either way, now the series is really kicking off and we're about to see just how freakin wild this Crazy Train is going to go. Either way, I got my first-class ticket, I'm locked and loaded, and I'm ready to rock-and-roll!

I have a REALLY CRAZY theory... Emilia is Satella’s body. My theory would say that Satella was defeated and her body and soul were separated. Her soul now is lacking a body and her body managed to survive with either a new soul put into it or eventually forging a new soul - Emilia. The body still has some of Satella’s powers, but not her witch factor hence why she is not immune to Return by Death’s reset, and doesn’t seem to completely have Satella’s immunity but has quite a bit of power.

Maybe Satella was "Envious" of Subaru's love for Emilia. Maybe she wanted his love all for herself. Considering the connections between Emilia and Satella; Satella could've used Emilia as a vessel to become Subaru's love. Also another reason that allowed herself to become a vessel was because of the trauma Emilia went through in the trial that we have no information on yet. I do know that Satella is still sealed away but she could still possess Emilia, linking her power to be used. I haven't read much in the novel but I could be wrong. Edit: Just throwing in another after thought; after returned by death, Subaru didn't even wake Emilia up this time, allowing further trauma. MAYBE this allowed deeper connections for possession to be possible.

i believe that it is possible to break an authority choosing the right thing against the wrong one, if you choose wrong and kill someone than the authority activates properly and you became an archbishop, if you activate it but not became mad you are a witch/warlock. i think subaru is a special case here.

Ahh man, I really do enjoy your reviews. It's basically become a weekly thing for me to watch the episode, then immediately hop onto your channel. This episode definitely revealed A LOT, especially regarding the witches. In terms of Satella and Emilia, I'm starting to think that Emilia may actually be the reincarnation of Satella or an avatar of some sort. Perhaps it's a similar item to how the Witch of Sloth possessed Subaru back in season 1? With Satella's appearance, it almost certainly has to do with Subaru being able to keep his memories. Echidna did say that he would no longer recognise the existence of the one who gave him that cloth (Or something along those lines). Perhaps Satella is the one collecting the payment? Either way, definitely looking forward to next week!
