The World After Subaru Dies | Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 12 Review/Analysis

Natsuki Subaru takes the second trial of the Sanctuary, and witnesses the unthinkable present. Here's my review of Re:Zero Season 2 Episode 12, AKA Re:Zero Episode 37.

After recovering from the worst loop yet, Subaru enters the Witch's tomb and accidentally takes the second trial. Because of his unique ability, this trial is extremely hard for Subaru. He has to witness the fate of each world after he left it, and that was too much for him to bear. One scene of note showed Puck, the Beast of the End, being killed by Reinhard van Astrea, the Sword Saint (using the Dragon Sword Reid). After failing the trial, Subaru's greeted by a Rem, who is no longer asleep. Rem tries to kiss Subaru shortly before he learns that she's really Carmilla, the Witch of Lust. Subaru enters another Witch's Tea Party, where Echidna, the Witch of Greed, offers to form a contract with him. They're interrupted by Minerva and all the other witches, including Sehkmet, the Witch of Sloth. Echidna then gives a long speech, revealing her true intentions. Echidna's real goal is to use Subaru's Return by Death ability to satisfy her curiosity. Subaru rejects her, and then Satella, the Witch of Envy appears.

That's the test, the trial consists of creating IF through the memory of the individual. What subaru must know he mustn't focus on what he failed, cause as you can see, he died in the first when he encountered NO ONE yet. His stress and trauma came from FAILING he have always loved (beatrice,ram,rem,emilia,etc.). If he stuck in that perception the trial will not let him pass. He must LET GO and acceptance that the IF future happened and always be apart of him BUT will not impacted him on his past stitching a new future with the CONSEQUENCES of the IF future.

What the Witch of Sloth said had the most impact to me about the whole contract idea: This wouldn't be the promise you always precede with "In the end..." would it? Meaning that "in the end" Subaru would get the outcome he desired. In the end, after dying millions of times to satisfy every facet of Echidna's greed. That part was a clever way to allude to that, because in the anime, it wasn't PRECISELY clear why it was so bad to accept Echidna's contract, but Sekmhet saying that made it perfectly clear to me.

LN reader here, and I agree with the editing and directing choices in this episode. Come to think of it, I've agreed with all the changes the anime has made to the LN so far; it's a masterclass in how to adapt an existing story to the strengths of the medium it's being adapted to. GRR Martin and Benioff & Weiss should be forced by court order to sit at Tappei's (and Watamabe's) feet for a year to learn how to actually write.
