Yeah tbh having a whole foreground layer would be a huge undertaking, analogous to how 1.2 added slopes and integrated them into world generation.

Certified terraria 2 idea. They wouldn't add an entire layer to this aging engine, especially if they are already reaching the limit on paints and liquids.

@@cakeyeater7392 They are pretty far from the limit of what they can do. They're working within a constraint in that they don't want to increase the size of the tile data structure, which I think is currently 16 bytes (+ overhead) per tile. From looking at tmodloader, 1.4.3 actually has 4 bits leftover in the Tile data structure; these are now used by the echo and illuminant coatings (tracked for both background and foreground), leaving 0 bits left over. They can just increase it by another 4 bytes (because of alignment reasons), but that'll require at minimum an additional 19MB, 44MB, and 77MB of memory for the respective map sizes.

Back then, they had to use gemspark walls for lighting builds. Now illuminant coating gives us the choice to light them up without needing a background.

And if we want light, we can use gemspark walls but echo-coat them to hide the wall itself!

Another gemspark related thing: In modern/futuristic builds I sometimes like to hammer gemspark into cool light designs, but they don't actually emit that much light... Echo torches! And why stop at gemspark nowadays? Illuminant coating on whatever you want to appear as the light source, invisible torches on the blocks surrounding it. You could make cool glowing crystals, whatever you come up with. The way different torches could blend seems interesting too, from subtle gradients to rainbows. If it's super smooth and blends, you could alternate white and natural torch light for something in between too, maybe amber/topaz/ichor? Lighting can do so much so I'll definitely play around.

It was my biggest grief with 1.4. It felt like the building aspect was shirked entirely for what I still believe to be a lot of petty reasons from Red. That being said, this update is quickly looking to make ammends.

you’re playing an adventure map, you’re making it through, just entered hard mode, you flip a lever to activate a teleporter to go back home, and the the entire background and sky over the whole world are different. the uses for echo coating are gonna be so exciting

I already have a great idea for 3D houses! We can make houses that is not visible inside when you are out of it with actuator and echo paint. The system could be triggered by buttons that are in entering or exiting of building.

I still love the fact that Re:Logic keeps listening to the Terraria community. I thought that they were actually gonna remove Illuminant Paint due to the number of paint limitations, but they still found a way to keep it. Most of the update they made so far was overwhelmingly great, and i love it

Echo coating will be great for working in specific biomes! I was making a build in the Hallow, but it got too tall, so the top wasn't in the biome anymore. With echo coating, we'll be able to place down a bunch of biome blocks around our builds to make sure every part is in the biome we want!

I could see echo coating being used super well in adventure/platformer maps. The immediate idea I thought of, was a pressure plate that activated the monolith while you stood on it, but shut it off when you walked off. That way, at the start of a platforming segment you would see where all the invisible blocks were, but once you stepped off, you'd have to go by memory on where they were located.

There is a lot of potential with the echo coating! I can only imagine the stuff that would be possible with adventure maps. One thing I am wondering, though, is whether actuators would be able to function alongside the echo chamber. If so, then you could not only make a build appear invisible at the flick of a switch, but also be able to walk through it, which would really make it seem as if it wasn't there. It wouldn't be perfect, since that would prevent any floor or wall based furniture from being used, but it would still be really cool, like for the tower in this video.

OH MY GOSH :O The things you could do with these are freakin' ENDLESS!!! Even just off the top of my head, only looking at the Echo coating: -Invisible walls to block mob spawns with -Invisible traps. Need I say more. -Builds that look all crumbly and ruined while still being valid houses -Doing that window trick to make it look like separate panes of glass without invalidating the housing -Hiding chests in multiplayer so your valuables are safer -Hidden biome blocks to change biomes without needing to affect the look of your builds; or heck, hide a music box in there and you might be able to just about fake a whole different biome! And they all stack with normal paints?? AND Illuminant coating??? THIS IS A GAME CHANGER!!! This update is gonna be SO GOOD :D

Invisible paint has so much uses, some of them you don't even notice until they're there. Like large bamboo! I always used fences for supports instead of large bamboo because it's not 1 tile sized.

I would like to see a WEAPON dye system as alot of weapons would look great with dyes. We have pet shampoo that paints summons but that's exclusive for summoner only, might it could be hard to create as we have zenith but I wish that you really could paint those.

It'd be amazing to be able to somehow only reveal certain blocks with echo coating. You could use wiring to create sort of animations! Even with illuminant paint, you could use the same technique to make those cheesy neon signs that have like 2 or 3 frames of animation.

I can see the echo coating being used to make interesting adventure map puzzles. Have the monolith set on a timer so every few seconds the player will see the platforms only to vanish over a pit of lava or other hazards.

Ooh, I only just started watching this channel today so this might’ve been mentioned already, but imagine rigging these up to day/night sensors. Like, a wizard tower you can only see when the sun goes down? That could be neat. Anyways, SUPER cool builds! I have a cool concept for an adventure map parkour section with a lever where it turns on an echo chamber but also actuates the blocks you need to jump on, so you need to memorize the places you need to jump

everyone's talking about the coatings, the way echo stuff blends with other blocks and that stuff, while I am also very exited for how echo walls look, they look so cool, like some sort of forcefield and also the coatings will be great to do a little trolling or make one way gates with hoiks

A niche use is that when combined with actuators, you can have blocks that disappear and have no hitbox, but reappear and have a hitbox. Or just never appear in the first place allowing for lockable doors, great for blood moons
