Hello and welcome, friends and fellow flute enthusiasts! I'm excited to invite you on a captivating journey through time and melody in my latest video, "Echoes In Time: Evolution of the Native American Flute."
We'll begin with the Breckenridge Flute, one of the earliest known flutes that dates back to 1020-1160 CE. This iconic instrument was crafted from a single piece of river cane and serves as a testament to the creativity and craftsmanship of our ancestors.
Next, we'll explore the Beltrami Flute, which was collected by Italian explorer Giacomo Costantino Beltrami in 1823. This flute marks a significant shift in materials from rivercane to wood, and its intricate carvings are a sight to behold.
Our journey continues with the distinctive Belo Cozad Flute. Crafted by Kiowa artist Belo Cozad in the early 1900s, this flute carries the unique sounds of Kiowa culture, designed to warble on the root note.
We'll then delve into the work of Dr. Richard Payne, a respected authority in indigenous flute studies. Known as "Toubat", a Kiowa term for "wind instrument", Dr. Payne's dedication to preserving and promoting Native American musical traditions is truly inspiring.
Finally, we'll discover the transformative work of Michael Graham Allen, also known as Coyote Oldman. His introduction of the "modern" native style flute in the 1980s, inspired by the Japanese Shakuhachi, has left an indelible mark on the world of Native American flutes.
So come along with me as we trace the echoes of these flutes through time, celebrating the rich history and vibrant evolution of the Native American flute. Let's uncover together the enduring melodies that have evolved and continue to resonate today.
I sincerely hope that you've enjoyed this video. Our journey doesn't have to end here. If you've been inspired by these beautiful instruments and their enduring melodies, why not start your journey with the Native flute? Jonny has the voice of a natural born teacher- his voice is soft, his phrasing impeccable, his pronunciations are clean; he imparts knowledge so easily!!!! And that Mayan Harmony D /A flute's sound was HEAVENLY!!!!!!!! Could listen for hours to that!!!! Incidentally, I was fortunate enough to find a Coyote Oldman flute on Ebay and enjoy it greatly. You never know when such things will turn up! THANKS Jonny, for this awesome presesntation!

An excellent video, Jonny! Yes, I had read and heard about the dudes you mentioned, like Belo Cozad, Doc Payne / Toubat Michael Graham Allen / Coyote Oldman, but you gave me more info on these dudes and why their work and contributions mattered. I also got to see replicas of some of the old flutes that I had never seen before. With the Breckenridge Flute, I was amazed first by the narrowness of its bore, and the fact that it was tuned to a Phrygian scale, with a flattened second. The Belo Cozad and Doc Payne flutes played in a Major Pentatonic scale with the fifth as the fundamental note - an interesting thing that I noticed on these flutes was that you kept the second hole up from the bottom covered or closed - why? Also, in addition to the differences between the recorder and the Native Flute that you mentioned, the differences that make the most difference in the sound lie in the width and shape of the Sound Chamber - narrower and tapered for the recorder, versus wider and cylindrical for the Native Flute. It seems like you showed many different kinds of drone flutes in this video - even though they seem to be all the rage among most flute players, I never got off on them, they never really appealed to me. The music you were playing on that triple drone flute reminded me a lot of primitive medieval European music. Thanks again, Jonny Sensei!

Awesome video and top notch production quality. One thing I would like to correct is the thought that the minor pentatonic scale was only recently added to the flute. This is a complete falsehood, in fact Doc Tate Nevaquaya (Comanche) recorded albums in the 70s with minor pentatonic flutes, also Belo Cozads famous “Story of the Flute” song recorded in the 1940s is also in the minor pentatonic scale - and can be replicated today almost 90 years later. The voicing for the Breckenridge flute is also in a modified minor pentatonic scale as well, just without the fundamental note. While flutes were in various scales, the minor pentatonic was one that was common and it wasn’t created in the 80s or a Shakuhachi that inspired it. This is common misinformation that has been going around for years now. As an indigenous flute player myself, it is important for this information to be corrected, as we have been playing this instrument for 1000+ years at this point, and a non-indigenous person in the late 20th century did not invent the flute and scale we play on.

Excellent, very professionally crafted video, Jonny. In a short amount of time, you have distilled your many years of study and practice into a very approachable and clearly understandable video covering a wide array of the various elements of the NAF. This video should be required viewing for anyone interested in the subject. I have been following you for several years, and have taken a good number of your courses, as well as being a bit of a regular at your online store! 😉 My music journey has taken me to many places recently, but my love for the NAF holds as true as ever. I am truly grateful for you and all that you do for the NAF playing community. Many blessings to you, Maria, your children (my wife and I loved your duet with Eli!), and your hardworking crew this holiday season.

Hi Jonny, Thanks for sharing this information along with the time line of the changes that were made. I was aware of a difference between traditional tuning and modern tuning and of some of the history involving Dr. Payne and others but your posting of this video really clears it up for me. Thanks

My instruments are insured against loss but some of them are irreplaceable being one-of-a-kind and from flute makers who are deceased or who no longer practice their craft.

This is gonna sound super odd and I apologise if I sound annoying but I actually found your channel recently from a rapper/flautist André 3000. He's my favourite rapper personally and he recently announced he'd be doing an album with no rapping with lots of flutes called 'New Blue Sun'. It got me super excited to hear this new album because his flute playing sounded really nice to me and I wanted to find more videos of flutes which sounded like the ones he used (I just find the flute to sound so nice and beautiful to my ears) and I stumbled onto your channel as a result and wow. You play the flute so incredibly well, it's beautiful. I'm so glad to have discovered this channel from 3 Stacks (André's nickname). I think the flute has become one of my favourite instruments in such a short span of time (In particular, the native American flute. It sounds sooooo good. Love this video so much: kzbin.infoyxps5oF-NiM?si=Gkf3tVzk3-xZqO7o ). Thank you for these videos!

PS - I do think that there would be enough material for you to make a volume two of this video. In addition, I wonder if you have ever considered the following possibility: making a video about your ideas and speculations about how the Native Flute could evolve in the future...
