Charlie, I want to tell you something you already know. The reason I want to do that is because I want you to know that I know, and that I am not the only one. You have done more for Native Americans by your openness, your willingness to share, and your skill and talent than all the agencies in the world. As a mostly white guy living next to the Qualla Boundary with a Cherokee great-grandmother, sometimes I just want to hang on to a little bit of that. Not to make a profit, or to take it away from anybody else. Just to have a little of it for myself. So I make flutes once in a while. Like you taught me. Because you taught me, I will remember that tiny bit of where I came from a little better. You keep doing what you are doing. Sometimes I hear those beautiful haunting tones, and I look down, and it is my flute, made by my hands, out of invasive bamboo growing on my place, making my song. You made that possible. Thank you Charlie.

I've had a Native American flute for a decade. I wanted to try making my own back then. Someone close to me told me that I know nothing about music so I couldn't possibly. I watched one of your videos a week ago. The next day I bought the materials to try making a tin whistle (what I have been learning lately) from copper. Getting that first pure bell note was an experience I will never forget. I've made a couple now, and while they aren't perfect, they are mine. I feel a much closer bond with the music. And I think the better understanding of the instrument has helped my playing. I still have a half finished attempt at a Native flute which I might try to finish now. My daughter Jo, bought me your first book just before we contracted covid in December. We lost my father in law during this time. Sir, without the peace brought by my little imperfect flutes , I may have found it much harder to deal with. I make flutes that I like to play. I just recently really fell in love with the soulful meditating sound of the Native American flute. I’m a woodworker and make many things but never thought of making flutes but when I stumbled upon Erik the flute makers KZbin site and heard the Native American flute I absolutely fell in love thus my journey to learn the art of making my own personal flute as I’ve learned from woodworking each project takes a little bit of me as I pour myself into my work. I happened upon your channel in my search and I have to say you are an inspiration and it’s a joy to see that you go the extra mile to teach a craft that literally goes into a persons soul. Funny thing is, every craft seems to have these snobs. Luthrie is packed with them. I've been building string instruments for seven years. People always ask me if I went to school to learn what I do. It's like that with many hand crafts. They act like you can only be educated by a master or professor.

Don’t sell yourself short Charlie because there are some people that can’t walk and chew gum at the same time. After watching one of your earlier videos I knew that I had to try and build me a NA Flute. That was four years ago and after a few trial and errors, with help from you and a few others, I am now able to build some very nice playable flutes that I give to my family and friends. As for people that can’t understand it, if you were born here, by definition you are a Native American. Look it up. I am 74 years and counting. Whether you know it or not, you sir have taught me how to enjoy my golden years with my new found hobby, building Native American Flutes. I wish we could chat on the phone. I have so much to say about your inspirational videos that I don't know where to start, so I'll just start from the beginning of my story and make it as short as I can. I sold my company in 2005 and found it was difficult to find full time work. No one wanted an ex-business owner. I spent my time searching my ancestry trying to find my Native American connection. I found it in 2013 and started to learn about my heritage as best as I could. The local tribe helped above and beyond anything I could have hoped. I don't have a piece of paper but I know where I come from. I started out making rawhide hand drums. At the time, I didn't even like flute music. I was sitting with some friends and saw a chunk of a cedar fence post that was half burned in the camp fire from the night before and got to looking at it. My friends had told me the story of Old Man Cedar so I was thinking, this was a living thing that was cut down and used as a fence post only to windup as firewood after it was to old to stand. I got to thinking, what could I do with this ugly old piece of wood to give it a new life? I have never carved anything in my life so I figured that was out of the question. I went online and just randomly searched native crafts to see if there was something I could do. One of the first things that came up was a guy that made Native American flutes. I'll give you ONE guess as to who's KZbin video came up! Okay, I can't carve, I can't play, and I don't like flute music. SO, CHALLENGE ACCEPTED! I took that ugly burnt piece of cedar and made it into a flute, giving it a voice to sing of it's gratitude. I've never done it before, don't know how to play it, but it's voice was the most beautiful thing I have ever heard and couldn't believe I was the one playing it when I played back the recording. You got me hooked! I have made a short log of all the flutes that I have made on my KZbin channel because all the flutes I have made have been gifted to someone. I don't sell my flutes. I only have two that I have made that will not be sold or gifted. One is so ugly I love it, and the other is the inspiration for the Oral Traditional Story I created called, The Wisdom of The Ugly Flute. Thus the name White Wolf's Ugly Flutes. All of my flutes were made from scrap or rejected wood. How honest and straight from the heart. I totally agree with your comments because all native instruments are felt throughout the body and not necessarily mechanical. So when you mentioned that you tune by ear I feel that you get the feeling from the material that the instrument is derived from and to tune it through mechanical means, takes away the heart of the instrument and how personal it feels. You can pick up an instrument and immediately know this is the one whether it be $5 or $2005, price does not determine the fit. What does determine the fit is how it feels.

I've made a few flutes following your guidelines preferring to give them as gifts rather than sell them. My joy is in the making and successful tuning. Hello in there, Charlie... I want to note that I am very grateful to you.. I stumbled upon your videos several years ago, watched them, and bought your book and a flute kit and the hole burning rod... I was simultaneously receiving free guidance from various flute-makers, both native and non-native, on various forums and later on FB, who, like you, simply wish to share their love of this instrument with others. It is a very special instrument, Charlie, which allows people like myself to join the ranks of 'musician', however modest their playing, but, even more, it offers us the greatest blessing of being able to express ourselves.. Having crafted what was a very decent little kit flute, I wanted to share my love of the NAF with strangers we'd meet as we travelled through various countries in 2018.. I asked if I could order another 5 kit flutes in a bit of a rush, and when you heard that I wanted to craft them so that I could gift them to people we met along that way you generously gave me a discount on what were already really affordable kits. Your generosity made it possible for me to introduce 5 people to this instrument in places as remote as Mongolia, and people beamed with gratitude and joy when they received their treasures. My hubby was watching me as I fluted in the family Ger of a Mongolian Eagle Hunter.. He had played his traditional horse-hair instrument, the morin khuur,, and sung to us, and then asked me to play the flute. I flute with my eyes closed, and when I opened them at the end of playing my hubby pointed discreetly at our hosts' niece, and said "her eyes have been riveted to you the whole time" and that little 10 year old was still staring at me, as though I'd created magic.. Even though they were a nomadic extended family, so possessions were light on, they treasured music, as witnessed by a gifted uke hanging on their 'walls'. That family were teh recipients of one of your flutes, and I'm certain at least some of them will be playing the flute as they travel.. ......... ......... I have seen you smile in every video of your's that I've watched over the years and the tension that you were feeling in this video is clear. I'm sorry that you bear the brunt of some maker's disgruntlement. I truly hope that heaviness has cleared since you made this video. .. My heart is grateful to you and other NAF makers who understand people's genuine desire to play this instrument and later to share their own flute-making skills with others. I have made a small number of flutes now, mostly from driftwood that is precious to me, and mostly using the simplest tools (no power tools yet), and I've even taught two 'annual camping friends' the basics while I was working on my own little camping table, and their faces beaming when their first notes arise is pure joy... This instrument has honestly changed my life, added a whole other layer, and I will always be grateful to those who shared their skills so generously with me without thought of personal gain, simply because they realised what a gift that knowledge is. I had something inside me, that motivated me to make flutes, from the early age of 10. My only guide, was looking at what was on tv, and in the stores. I made the easiest kind I could, side blow, from the materials I had around me. Bamboo, and plastic pipe, using the only tool I had, a pocket knife. It was 1970, and there was no internet to learn from. But I had fun, and in time learned more about how different wind instruments are made, and what affects the way they sound. I wish I had your KZbin channel back then. Thanks for doing what you do.

One of my favorite axioms is, "Whether you think you can or you think you can't....you're right!" I, too, am offended by a flute maker telling someone they can't and shouldn't try. I've made NAFs, native flutes, native American style flutes, etc. They are all end-blown fipple flutes. I don't particularly care for highly decorated or "shiny, polished" flutes. To me, it's what is expressed in the music created by the player that is important. There will always be people trying to set themselves up as experts or authorities on a subject(heavy sigh). You and your family have been and continue to be an inspiration to many, many people worldwide. Ignore the naysayers and self-promoters. Keep on keepin' on! We're listening and watching.

I love my tiki torch flute, that I learned to make from Charlie's video. The hubs is amazed that a piece of bamboo can sound this good! I'm learning to play it while waiting for my Blue Bear flute order to come in. That poor dude just needs to take a deep breath, and build his flute kit, instead of sending it back. He will be delighted about the results... And probably disappointed that he has spent so much money on other flutes, but he will be enlightened. Thank you for sharing your heart about this. About "getting too big for your britches"! When I get interested in something, I want to understand how it works. I heard a Native American Flute played by a hiker in TN and was mesmerized. I researched, tried to understand what I should be mindful of when I bought one. And stumbled onto a KZbin about making one from PVC. What better way to understand the mechanics, the history, and to be part of that history. Mine is a G flute, is in tune, and I'm very proud of it. It plays very quiet and overblows easily which makes it my choice for travel. I can entertain myself instead of having its voice carry. (Music is not a well defined skill- better to be unobtrusive.). I've appreciated your videos and I'm sure you know that the voice that is negative is often noticed. May this video give us all the courage to speak out!

Anything done for just selfish material gain, greed, personal pride and power and control is a part of the problem we are now having to deal with in every aspect of our "world" society.. It seems people need to start looking within themselves and be honest about their motives. The backstory you have shared at 7:23 is a story I read and understood (as a non native american just passionate about its culture and tradition) as an oral tradition that's been passed down on the origin of the native american flute amidst the many many stories passed down by oral tradition. I won't say I will distrust the way that maker found their inspiration but I wish people who tell these stories understood these stories, if not disclaimed can take away the traditional flute history from its amazing creators for these makers personal gain. I don't own one of your flutes, nor ever played one. I just ran across your channel one day, and saw you doing something I'd done, many decades ago while I was out camping/fishing in the Rockies- Making a Flute from scratch, and showing OTHERS, how to do so. That is what made me "like"/"subscribe" to your channel, you reminded me of a NA friend of my from my youth. It was out there on that fishing trip, I found a piece of wood, and began whittling it, with nothing really in mind. I already played guitar at that time and had been thinking earlier that day how I wished I'd brought it with me- But backpacking trips don't really leave much room for such luxuries. I remembered how my friend told me how easy it was to create a flute, mentioned some of the aspects of it, and, being it was already past time for good fishing, I decided to try. My final product wasn't perfect, tuned well, polished, "designed", or covered in special feathers or hair- But it DID work, and didn't give me any splinters in my lip, so I was pretty happy. Later that night, alone by my campfire, when I pulled it out and began just blowing some notes? I was pretty damn proud of what I'd been able to do. And it made me feel as if there wasn't anything I couldn't do- if I just put the effort into it. It was a wonderful feeling, I'll never forget. I'm truly sorry that customer of yours will never get to experience this- and all because someone told them they couldn't. I can fully see where you're coming from, and why. And the person that told them that? Should be ashamed, the rest of their days, for stealing that incredible life-enhancing moment from that person, for whatever selfish reason they had. I had NO idea what I was doing- I've seen your teaching, it's fantastic, and can't imagine what I might have been able to create? If I'd of had that kind of guidance, the day I created my own source for music. Keep doing what you're doing- and as you said- Never give up. Those kind of people will always exist, and one day? Maybe that same person will return, once they realize something was stolen from them.

I had something similar happen to me. About ten years ago I started making wood stripped kayaks. At the time, almost everyone building in a traditional all wood material handcrafted. I decided to build a wood strip kayak but with some components to add strength, save weight ando save by my back., I use light carbon fiber for cockpit, and factory seat, and a factory skeg.. In posting to the kayak fórum of my progress, I received criticism for not using all wood construction. Today, I see it common to mix the new methods with the old,,, thks for video,,, I am now ready to learn flute making...

I've often wondered about the reaction you get from others who guard their secrets carefully. Really disheartening to hear how resentful some can be about sharing knowledge. You're THE best (and often only) resource for producing a high-quality Native American flute from beginning to end. I've read and viewed other sources. They are often incomplete at best or downright incorrect. Currently, I am researching side-blown Asian flutes and am struggling to find comprehensive information aside from documentation from archeological findings. Thank you Charlie Mato-Toyela, I really doubt I would found this wonderful creative outlet without your videos!

Charlie, your channel found me at the beginning of the week. The video on making flutes from bamboo torches inspired me to give it a try. I've never played a flute before, but I had tools enough and a bamboo supply. For 3 straight nights, I have gone to work on making flutes, and it's been 3 of the most relaxing nights I've had in a very long time. Even when the first flute didn't turn out great, I came back the next night and made a better sounding flute the next. I came back to make an even better one on the third night, but the flute I created made no sound. I didn't fail, because I learned more lessons from making the one that doesn't make sound than either of the previous flutes. If anyone ever tells you the don't have the tools, direct them to that video. I think that in that video you show how little tools you have to have in order to make a flute.

Knowledge is power. How you use that power defines the kind of person you are. To the potential customer that cancelled their order: I feel sad for you. You let someone convince you that you couldn't do something without even attempting to achieve it. You obviously have the desire to make a flute or you would not have ordered in the first place. Please reconsider. When I was not even old enough to read or write I would sing. Nobody told me I couldn't sing because I could not read words or music. I just DID it! Guess what. I never learned to read music, but I sang in a professional choir, I play the guitar, banjo, dulcimer and NA flute! Charlie: Thank you! This touched me on so many levels. Charlie, let me be your own personal "spy" and say this from a third party perspective. I started with you and am sending my second batch of thankyou gifts to you I promised, ASAP, because of what you brought into my life, beginning with KZbin and then your book, starting this amazing adventure. But I am also good friends with numerous key players at the Native American Flute (and Native American style flute) Makers' Forum on Facebook (where people inevitably butt heads on opinions) with Hawk Henries, Jon Norris, Mike Prairie, Edward Kort, etc. Not only would no one speak poorly of you openly (when given many chances by new folks showing up telling us how wonderful your influence is to them, me included), but a couple folks with differing opinions simply shrug and very privately say they have differences in opinions about history or making with you. That's all. It's usually along with a "he doesn't choose to be a part of this community" comment. And I get that -- I found contrary snobs I simply didn't have time and energy for in tarantula breeding, bow making, amateur radio, banjo, you name it. But I have to say out of all of it -- the makers on FB (as much as I distain FB) are the most open, sharing, and non-secretive about every last drop of arcane knowledge I've ever witnessed. Totally unlike any other craft full of people not wanting their trade secrets stolen. Totally the opposite, almost to a point of endanering their own businesses. And they all say the same thing. Demand grows steadily and very few people stick with making quality flutes for long enough, and in enough quantity, to make any difference in their livelihoods from them sharing their trade secrets. Most of it just winds up helping starry-eyed people make their own, better flutes, or sell a few and move on (largely, on average). The stuff that hurts more is the giant mechanized machines spitting them out by the thousand, and sharing craftmanship skills isn't going to change CNC programmers and machinists impact. Just MHO, my friend who started me down the greatest adventure of my life, Charlie. P.S. I did have one person disuade me from making until I'd been playing for some time, in order "to know how to voice the flute as it deserves", but influences like yours and, honestly, the Makers' Forum, too, made me keep on going. Yes I do feel I make a better flute now than last August, but I made nice flutes pretty quickly, based on your tutorials. One of whick I came back here to check... we love ya man

I've made 8 or so flutes in A, F#, and my favorite, a D I just love. This problem, is reflected in many disciplines. It is an unfortunate part of human nature. Actually two parts of human nature. 1) the desire to be special, unique, to stand apart from, and above others. 2) The desire to make personal gain, monetary, social, etc. from that. It is sad, that some people, in the both categories, will do/say bad/mean/untrue things, to discourage anyone who challenges that way of thinking. I think it can be hard, to chose when it is best to expose this problem, and when it is best not to interfere with peoples livelihood, and peoples need to feel special. I think you have done a wonderful job, of addressing this problem, in the nicest way possible. As a person who plays a wide variety of sound making things, on a limited budget, I learned early on, how to separate the quality of a thing, from the hype. I learned that in some cases, I can make my own, without spending more that it would cost, to buy a better version of the same thing. And that there is a value to making something, beyond just saving money. I learned how to find good information about, what makes things sound different, and how those differences would affect my enjoyment of that thing. I accept that the qualities that I like, are not always the qualities, that others prefer. I accept that making mistakes, and not getting the best for me on the first try, is part of the journey. I accept the fact that sometimes I must compromise between what I would like, and what I can afford. I have learned that, what once pleased me, may no longer do so, and that what I did not like in the past, may now be what I like. To the best of my ability, I share what I have learned, knowing that my advice might steer someone, in a direction, that is not right for them. I hope you have a wonderful day. I appreciate what you do, the knowledge that you share, your desire to bring joy to our world, and I wish you continuing success and happiness in your life.

Loved this! I also come from the "I CAN" group. I work with kids with learning disabilities and much of what I do is teaching them how to compensate for their weak areas, so that they CAN do whatever they wish. So many have given up by the time they reach me. It's wonderful to see their attitudes turn around. I have two of your lovely flutes and enjoy them both.

Keep doing you! The value in a flute, or any device that enables us to express ourselves, is in how you relate to it, and the attitude of the person making it. If a person makes their own, they really 'own' it. You create through your passion, and you help create that drive in others. That's how the world becomes a better place. BTW, you inspired me to create a PVC flute in E4. Halfway through it now. I like trusting my hands. I used to make my living for a while as a pipe maker (briar pipes), and as a visual artist. It was always satisfying to help bring creativity out in others.

I am not making an excuse for the "flute maker", but in an attempt at understanding motive I try and remember that many people have been crushed by the Covid-19 pandemic's affect on the economy and some folks are in a position that have them struggling to survive. So I keep them in prayer. My first NA Style flute was made from bamboo and cost me $35. My current flute cost me $235, but a large portion of that was actually a donation to the tribe fighting for federal recognition. They are simple and I have always respected your stance on sharing your knowledge. I pray for abundant blessings to fall upon you Brother.
