Great music. Once you listen to it, it stays in your head and you want to come back to it. Recently, I have been interested in playing the kora and I did not think that it is possible to compose such wonderful music for this instrument. I have no musical education, but could you tell me in what key this piece is composed? I'm asking because I'll admit to you that I'd like to learn how to play it. Congratulations.

I have a (small) trave kora., with the extra string. I was wondering what the full tunings are that you use for your compositions? -They sound like minor scales, beautiful work btw 👏

Hi Roddy, sorry it’s taken so long to reply! This is F minor I believe - F, G, Ab, Bb, C, Db, Eb, F. The two lowest strings are F and Bb.

I think I just replied to you on FB, but for others reading this - a Neumann KM184. I find one is fine for this type of recording as I use a lot of stereo reverb afterwards. I’m planning to do a video about recording the Kora as I get quite a few questions - watch this space!

Camera is a Panasonic GX80 on a desk mounted boom arm. I have a few cheap LED lighting panels, which make a big difference when used correctly.

Thanks! You’re right, it is tomora but with the addition of Db. I’ve heard it called “minor tuning”. Seckou Keita uses it quite a lot.

@@JulienRebelle not quite. Keep the C, it is the D that becomes Db. On the left side the notes from low to high are F, C, Db, Eb, etc

Hi Martin, the notes are F, Bb, C, Db, Eb, F, G, Ab, Bb, C, etc. That’s F minor scale I think. It’s not a traditional tuning as far as I’m aware, but does get used by kora players who collaborate with western musicians. Seckou Keita uses it quite often, for example. There is a traditional tuning called tomora which is essentially C minor scale (Bb, Ab, Eb). I love that tuning.
