When I was young, I was bullied at school. I was mocked, humiliated, beat up, smacked in the head, spit on and threatened on a daily basis. I'm 58 years old and these scars are still painful. I heard this song for the first time this year and it struck a chord deep within me. While I can't say I want to "be like the cool kids" (meaning the bullies who hurt me); I can say that I know what it's like to be a misfit or a loner. When I first heard this song, I loved it right away because I know what it means to be an outcast. Thank you, Echosmith, for a truly beautiful song.

This song has a great message for everyone. It's okay not to fit in. Find your passion and your voice. Just be yourself. I was awkward and shy when I was in high school. I joined clubs just to try and fit in. Most of the time I was very unhappy. Then I went to university, and I started to feel more confident. I completed my studies, found my soulmate, and got a job in my field. Meanwhile, I found out that some of the cool kids from high school got left behind. Some of them did drugs and couldn't find happiness. Trust me, your life will take a turn for the better if you just believe in yourself. Find a few good friends to help you get through the uncertainties of life.

I don't think many will read this, but I used to listen to this song when it first came out, I was in high school and I always wished I was like all the other "cool kids" in school, but as the years went by, I learnt that, all that ever mattered was how you loved yourself and the ones who truly matter. That's all that counts! :) that makes you the coolest of the kids!

A yearning for distant yesterday I have more and more. Way past being a kid, let alone the cool one. In hindsight, should never have worried about sticking out or cared, such a cool song.

I'm 57, and still the pain, I didn't forget 5th grade. 'We' didn't care about the cool kids. I found out I'm deranged (e.g. PTSD), autistic. I spent about 20 years in colleges and universities including after graduation as a tutor (did fluid mechanics). No gal peer was EVER interested in me and had a 'get together' (?because I was a ?serious student? read: Super Nerd - and still am). I've good communication and emotional intimacy skills. I'm a 'Counseling Medic', too. I'm 57 (now 6/6/2020) and never 'lived' - it's from the complications of 'psychological violence' (common term 'bullied'). Never got married, childless, never had a career, never fit in to society. All my life was 'academia'. I've failed as a 'dear hunter' - even tho I'm on many personals sites as 'dutch8926' for DOZENS of years. I'm now dying in terminal phases. If you inflict 'psychological violence', you may never know how much life-changing harm is caused.

Not sure who needs to hear this, but here we go: I heard this song at 34 and it brought me to tears. I was mercilessly teased as an awkward, skinny, nerdy 80's kid. Big glasses, borderline mullet, severe acne, loved computers and role-playing games; I was a walking 80's nerd stereotype. It felt like everyone else "got it" except me. This song brought it all back in high contrast. Fast forward to adulthood and the playing field becomes leveled. I've reconnected with those cool kids- and not just the mean ones. The cool kids that made *everyone* feel comfortable. The ones that had a beautiful partner, that were quick to laugh, that put people around them at ease, that got good grades AND excelled in sports. I'm sure you can think of one or two. It turns out they had the same feelings. They went through the same ups and downs. Self-perception is a funny thing. Everyone goes through their own respective existential crisis. Everyone has self-doubts. It gets better. This will sound hokey, but it's all true: Appreciate your friends. Focus on what makes you happy. Tune out the noise. Put yourself into work that has meaning and a family that loves you for you. If it seems impossible keep looking, because it is out there. Love yourself. You will get there.
@MattsARocknRolla2 жыл бұрын
I was never picked on…I had friends in every clique. I just never felt I belonged to one of them. You’re right about cutting out the noise. If I could tell my younger self one thing, it’d be ghost and focus on self betterment. Instead of trying to find validation from others find it within

Not really this is just the story of some random kid that wants to be a part of something, pumped up kicks is about a fuckin psycho who wants to shoot his school
@John_F_Kennedy794 жыл бұрын
Mad Villian pumped up kicks is a story about a kid who turned psycho from isolation and harbored resentment towards his peers and eventually snaps and commits a shooting. This is supported by the singer’s confirmation that the song is about a teen’s spiral into a manic rage. This can happen when someone wants to desperately fit in and be a part of something. This song is displaying that aspect without involving violent details. It’s almost as if this song is the family friendly prequel to pumped up kicks lol.

I think that a lot of people have misunderstood this song. In the beginning, she says cool is being unique. All the people she describes as being "cool" in the song are "walking in a straight line". They are all headed down the same path. The song is about accepting who you are and accepting that it's cool to be unique.

Actually in the concert I saw last night they did this song and she explained that this song she wrote because she did wish she could fit in with the "cool kids" and the whole point of this song was to prove that you're not alone, obviously because she wrote this song. Yes it's important to know that being unique is cool but it's also okay to wish you could be like everyone else.
@allysonbrown85225 жыл бұрын
cookieHolix8 08 I agree, there is nothing wrong with wanting to be different but it’s dangerous if you get so obsessed about being what they call “cool” that you belittle yourself and your qualities. I’m speaking from experience. People change all the time and I think the important thing is that you love who you are, whether you’re labeled as cool or not.
