I mean the clones were commissioned way before the formation of the separatists and start of the clone wars since the initial purpose was to have a uniformed and professional standing army for the Republic instead of each individual system supplying their own defenses. The only people who knew the true purpose was Count Dooku and Palpatine since Palpatine was the one who orchestrated the entire war from the beginning.

The funny thing about that, is that the full fledged armour worn by the first generation of stormtroopers were most likely almost entirely made up of the ones from the war, so they replaced themselves lol.

@scooty470 Well that's not exactly true. In the Clone Wars tv show we get multiple extensive looks at Mandalore, and the majority are peaceful. It was only a small group of Mandalorians that wanted to revert back to their more violent and ruthless ways.

I read somewhere that the clone armor looked white to humans but to Kaminoan vision it was multicolored. The same is true for their stark white walls, which to their vision was colorful and patterned. Edit: The Kaminoans may have had a color coded troop system, but it was of no use to human vision so clones painted their armor themselves.

Comfort and aesthetics aside, most of the approach given to the phase 1 was actually good in my opinion, considering the millenia of general peace in the galaxy. A jack of all trades suit was a really good way to start a war, as they really didn't know what or where they were going to be fighting. Co sidering the war lasted only 3 years and halfway through it they changed the armor, for a galactic sized army, with so many modules to add and take off, as well as improvements to increase soldier performance while maintain protection, shows that they went to improve on the armor almost as soon as the feedback started coming. In this instance the phase 1 and phase 2 work in tandem. Phase 1 to provide the best degree of survivability to the unknown, while phase 2 trims the fat and adds where it needs to.

The armor basically voids all environmental concerns or hazards besides like lava. Phase 2 is also much more comfortable and flexible. And offered more protection than phase 1.

It could have been so easy to get rid of the ‘they’re clones so they are all identical’. Just say that the genome was slightly randomized to allow certain clones to be better at certain tasks, with the side-effect of slightly different heights.

Giglefreakz Even then, I doubt that George had enough money to make that many suits of armor for extras, as the Star Wars films by him were basically independent films with a huge budget. Meaning he funded them with his own money. Studios didn't fund it. It was all him. Fox just distributed the films.

I agree that there should have been some actual clone armor costumes made for the close up shots. However, watching the scene with bail and 501st clone troopers and realizing that each clone trooper is not even really on set is kind of amazing considering that revenge of the sith was released in theaters May of 2005. Now that's some impressive cgi to still be immersive and lifelike.

You see stormtroopers standing outside on the Death Star in A New Hope. Georges script described stormtroopers invading the Tantive as wearing "armoured spacesuits". So the armour protects the wearer from extreme cold, the vacuum of space, poisons & toxins, and hostile atmospheres. Though the armour could not stop a blaster bolt directly, it offers significant protection from blast effects & shrapnel.

While it isn't exclusively CLONE armor, it is actually referred to as "Phase III" Armor, because that's what it was, an evolution of the phase II, and phase III of Palpatine's plan. The only problem I have with Phase III Armor is that the helmet is a downgrade from the Phase II Helmet. I'd take a set of Phase III BODY Armor, but I'd then take a Phase II Helmet. Stormtroopers were actually super accurate, but the helmet visors were really small and the T visor was replaced.

Stormtrooper armor was cheaper, less effective, had a worse visor that Luke commented "you can't see anything in this". It was made for mass production, just like the Empire went from the elite clone army to a way larger army of conscripts and recruits that have barely a year or two of boot camp before being sent to the fire. The Empire didn't care if their troopers were less protected; if they died, millions of possible recruits were waiting on hundred of planets.

Has anybody else noticed that the clones (especially during the Geonosis Arena rescue in Attack of The Clones) would fire their DC-15 rifles from the hip, instead of firing from the shoulder and aiming down the sights like any other trained soldier would do? It confused me, considering all Clones in STar Wars are 100% CGI, so it's not like the actors would have had trouble lifting the prop rifles. Could his be explained by the lack of flexibility in the Phase I armor? I always loved how sleek the Phase I armor looked, but it seems that it would have been very bulky and heavy. This was also the clones' first day on the job, on a hot planet full of *sand* _(Nothing at all like the simulations!)_

most likely, the people doing the CGI got didn't know what to do,... you know not everybody uses guns so yeah blame it on that or they got bored on doing the same models so they made a few different one and went by the rule of cool (would need to rewatch it to know how good or bad it looks) apart from that it's the same question on why sword fights in movies are so bad and not better than the Wrestling of Sword fights. by the way I'm surprised how they made such bad armor when smiths in the 15th century could make superior armor when it comes to flexibility and cover of the body it's not like joints cost that much and everybody beeing the exact same or very close in physical properties. Just one mold for every piece and bam you can start mass production for perfectly fitting armor for everybody in the army

They didnt need to aim through the gun sights because they have heads up displays in their helmets that's why when the stormtroopers that were wrecking the rebels on the tantive lV were aiming at the hip but they still hit most of their shots

It's probably just a cool factor or just a complete lack of any knowledge when it comes to firearms. Even with heads up aiming shooting from the hip would be far less accurate then from the shoulder. It actually bugs me a lot because there is absolutely no way a military would mass produce armor you couldn't shoulder your weapon with.

G C In the Legends continuity, their were several variations for different environments. Magmatrooper armor was resistant to lava globules, Swamptrooper armor was resistant damage from predators in wetland environments, and Shadowtrooper armor was made of a material that could turn the trooper invisible.

You mentioned that the Phase I armor aesthetic meant for intimidation. To add to that, I think it was also kind of a wow factor as a selling point to impress the Jedi. I like the Phase 1 armor better. Seems more Mandalorian-ish and I really like the Mandalorians. The T shaped visor is a give away. Only species able to fully combat the laser sword wielding space wizards with blasters and technology. Sure the phase 2 offers better flexibility and comfort. BUT THAT WAS WAR! YOU DON'T HAVE TIME TO BE COMFORTABLE!

Phase1 is heavy plastoid armor based on mandalorian armor. So ITS HEAVIER and cant take few blasters, same for the DC15A rifle, its BIG but it can oneshoot heavy droids from long distances and a Jedi got knocked even deflecting it with the sword. Phase2 is agile armor, and rifle was replaced with short blaster carabines too. Remember Phase2 design was focused on replace the clones for new recruits, the need of a "most confortable and agile armor" like Phase2 is stupid omg, 99% clones had same size and strenght to move on a Phase1.

"They wanted to sell more toys, let's talk about how the changes can be rationalized in-universe" And you know, uniforms do just change periodically anyways. It doesn't need an explanation about efficiency. Sometimes things are just objectively worse but some bureaucrat somewhere decided they wanted to change the uniforms (usually to give his friend who owns a clothes factory a bit of govt. work [and maybe even a little kick-back under the table]) As a 40k fan I know all about rationalizing bullshit. I just think you should point out first and foremost the _real_ reason for something changing.

In the films it looks the same. But if you look at the armor in the Clone Wars series, it looks much different (Phase-I is cooler). BTW, there's an error in both Clone Wars and Rebels. Captain Rex claims that he kept the Phase-I chest piece becouse it is better. But if you look at the model, you can clearly see it's a Phase-II chest piece.

Why hadn't Republic used droids during Clone Wars too? Not to replace clones, but to complement them. Clones were available and main corporations behind droid production were involved on the side of the enemy, however it doesn't undermine any pros of using droids as well as meaning that any smaller competitor would just jump up to a chance of becoming a new de facto official supplier of droids to Republic goverment(and that's also billions of protocol, repair and service units, not just combat ones). Empire had used them and there were some guard and policing models used by Republic if I recall right. On the opposite side, we're actually shown several times why Separatists didn't have a symmetrical answer to clones... _because they're a bunch of megacorps that don't follow the will of their population to such a degree that _*_they can't use conscripts_* ;\ Sarcasm aside, that's a second question - why hadn't Separatists created mercenary and conscript professional armies?

@@AbyssWatcher745 Republic consumes millions of droids EVERY DAY. I've even mentioned it in a comment! Protocol droids, repair droids, medical droids and so on. They're pumped out non stop just to keep industry, goverment, infrastructure and business running. They're too ingrained into the society. Even at the height of Clone War, there are civilian droids everywhere in Republic. And here's a thing, B1 is a glorified protocol droid(that's why _someone_ got their head and body switched, but continue to function). And there is always competition so there is bound to be someone, who designed combat droid, but was just overshadowed by Separatist models before. But now, Separatist models *are banned* while the demand is *still there and higher then ever!* People were fine with killing millions to get such a chance irl. /cough/ Ford /cough/ Nazis /cough/ The problem is that majority of Separatist worlds are already supposed to have a standing professional army of some kind even before corporations decided to pump out droid armies. They already are supposed to exist in one way or another. Once again many irl parallels to how supposedly police forces were made into professional military in a matter of years.

@@futbolluva first of all there are a lot of noncombat roles that need to be filled. And a lot of them ARE already filled by droids. Fighters that are used by clones are already repaired by droids for example. Secondly, there is a need to create and hold the frontline for clones and jedis to be able to infiltrate behind it:\ Basically Space Marine and Imperial Guard relationship. Thirdly, you can just add personal droids for every clone that will shield them and carry extra equipement and add squad weapons droids that carry designated squad weapons. Like nowadays MULE robot prototypes. Or even leave squads of droids under the command of every single clone whenever there is a need to strengthen forces and no clones are available.

I think it's more of a issue of they are fighting droids and the clones might get discouraged and might even disobey orders because of it. It also might be the fact that the emperor was playing both sides and wanted the republic to be "good guys" and he just didn't care about the lives he wasted, plus like a comment already said the republic did use droids just not in a combat roll

Phase1 is more heavy and has no agility, way better than Phase2 FOR BATTLES. Same for the DC15A rifle, Phase2 armor and a carabine is better for patroling, but Phase1 can hold few droid blasters and the rifle can oneshoot them from kilometers on open battlefields, Phase1 troopers are designed for battle.

In most cases you wouldn't need the life support system. You'd barely use it. However you would always need flexibility. Making armor less bulkier was always something that was appriciated in warfare

@@davidj3841 Many soldiers deployed today will never see any fighting yet they all have to carry multiple spare mags, first aid equipment, grenades, a sidearm ect, things they will barely or even never use. Even a helmet on the modern battlefield isnt effective against bullets, it barely gets used in a way. All of this spare equipment is very bulky, makes it hard to maneuver , is very hot in the desert and will most likely never get used. Yet im pretty sure 90%-95% of military personnel wouldnt give up that stuff because it increases their chances of survival. No one wants to die on the battlefield so I highly doubt anyone would welcome flexibility over life support, especially considering the extreme conditions clones are expected to fight in.

We were talking about body armour and let me tell you you would almost never need a life support system as a clone because when you'd meed to go to space you would be supplied with an attachable one. A built in life support would hardly come to play and it's pretty fucking pointless. You would take a flexible armour over a fucking pointells bulky ass life support that you'd hardly use. Whereas a flexible armour is pretty fucking handy no matter what situation you find yourself in. Not to msntion that the phase 2 was better armoured as well.

@@davidj3841 First of all the definition of equipment is the set of articles or physical resources serving to equip a person or thing, so armor is by definition equipment. Secondly life support is not just oxygen, its a system to support your life so its reasonable to believe that the life support systems in a clones suit could administer medications to help with injuries and serve other functions aswell, which increases a clones chances of survival. You seem to be ignoring the concept that people want to live, i think that most people would agree that having a system to support their life is more important than being able to touch your toes.. i have put out plenty of reasons to back this up and all you've said back to it is that the life support is bulky, which is a very weak argument...

We only know about it not being vacuum sealed and not having built in oxygen wich as i said is pretty useless. And the phase 2 is not only more flexible cuz they have (or have not cuz we really don't know) the life support. It's made out of space dragon skin or what the fuck ever that creature was. And it really doesn't matter what you call or don't call equipment because we were only talking about the armour. Bulky and unwieldy armour is a hinderence and it can often hold back a soldier. And yes they do want to live and better armour is one of the things that will make you live. Imagine not being able to get behind cover or sometjing just because your armour is a piece of shit.

I really like the Lore they adapted for the armor change, it's like a lot of the better writing points in Star Wars a good tie in from real history. That as the war goes on innovation and adaptation of the army happens, the creation of squads and specialized roles is mainly seen in WW1 with all men at the beginning basically fulfilling the same role on the front and I think is one of the best pieces of this Lore.

I'd say from a story standpoint it makes sense. Phase 1 armor looked more Mandelorian in nature because they were based on Jango Fett while phase 2 looks more like storm troopers which would indicate what happens next (order 66). Yes I understand stormtroopers and clones are different, but honestly it visually lets you know this is the turning point that leads to the empire rising. Also my favorite armor was Rex's armor. The weird shoulder pad and half skirt are just weirdly aesthetic.

Well, not really. Captain Rex was shot in the chest by a Commando Droid wielding a longer range blaster(can't remember the specific blaster name) and it missed his heart by an inch. Within about 2 days of rest, he was capable of fighting off multiple Commando Droids with the help of a deserting Clone. Blasters are extremely efficient at killing if they strike vital areas, like bullets, but if they don't hit any organs you're just going to be badly burned. Which the armor mostly prevents that. And you even see multiple Clones take shots to the chest/stomach and continue fighting, so the armor combined with their natural resistance is certainly enough to allow them to take at least 2 shots as long as they are not struck in the heart, head, or lungs.

The armor typically disperses the energy from the shot, which knocks the person out. Still better than dying though. Still depends on where you get hit and with what on whether or not it is a lethal shot.

The Galatic Marines from the 21st Nova Corps in the assault on Mygeeto it's one of the most notable. Also the clone sharpshooters from the Battlefront 2 ( the first Battlefront 2) anyone remember that? The 501st legion!
