Every time I hear the Vong, I can't help but imagine them losing their minds seeing General Grievous dabbing at their army.

The in-universe assumption was that the Empire under Palpatine would’ve presented a more united response, as well as having less scruples. The problem is that Palpatine was blinded by his arrogance with his mastery over the Force, leaning heavily on foresight, and the Vong presented a blind spot. Eventually, the military brass and Moffs would’ve been forced to adapt their tactics rather than blindly follow Palpatine or Vader’s orders. With the Death Star? It’s an artificial moon, a massive technologically monstrosity. Straight up blasphemy! The Yuuzhan Vong would’ve went wild vying for the chance to destroy it.
@teleportedbreadfor3daysАй бұрын
Even putting all those aside, the reason the Yuuzhan Vong War ended was because the Jedi Order was willing to acknowledge the splintering Yuuzhan Vong who condemned their race’s warlike ways and desired a peaceful resolution in the end despite everything they had done. Grand Master Luke had a chance to destroy his enemies, but instead chose make peace with them and let them live even after the loss of trillions. Sidious, on the other hand, would have focused solely on a military response, making the Yuuzhan Vong decide to continue their violence. Sidious hasn’t a true diplomatic bone in his body. The war would be worse and more costly in every sense of the term than if they fought the Republic, and the Yuuzhan Vong would be more likely to win. And even if the Empire won, the people would have been _pissed_ in the aftermath.

I disagree, attacking during the thrawn era would have been a terrible idea, thrawn was a very practical leader, he would have likely negotiated a ceasefire with the new republic so both sides could defend their territory or outright worked with the new republic to defeat the yuuzhan vong. In about thirty years from when he was found during the events of the outbound flight project thrawn studied many species culture and art to the point he could tailor his tactics perfectly to each of them, one year in and he'd have the vong figured out and would find ways to defeat them.

Even if you discount Palpatine allowing the Vong to rampage for political purposes, there's also *literally every other politician in the Empire*. Governors, Moffs, and Grand Moffs are going to be fighting Admirals, Grand Admirals, Generals, Vader, Palpatine, and each other (and all of them save *maybe* Palpatine and Vader fighting each other) to be the one who gets "on top" at the end, or to secure their own power, or simply too terrified of the Rebellion growing in strength. Technologically... I will say, given they're often depicted with rapid-fire laser cannons and the lore of green lasers being more powerful at the cost of overall efficiency, I do think TIEs would be more effective out the gate against Coralskippers especially with their agility in mind. However, the majority of Imperial warships would have been ineffective, and with TIEs lacking hyperdrives (and shields to give them some durability when agility isn't enough) they'd be suffering far greater losses per engagement than the New Republic did. Add to that the obsession with superweapons, the aforementioned Rebellion (along with unsubjugated powers like the Hutts and Hapans and *new* rebellions cropping up, like the Dushkan League), and Palpatine's Force Minions being woefully inadequate to dealing with the Vong the way the New Jedi Order did, and the Empire is looking at a very long and costly war with zero chance of coming out of it stronger.

Four years later, in Episode VI, in both Canon and Legends, the Empire falls and fractures into multiple splinter groups. Do you think that if the Emperor hadn't dissolved the Senate by simply reducing its strength during the Imperial Era and then handing more power to Mas Amedda or another Imperial bureaucrat as part of the Contingency, the Empire would have survived long enough to finally crush the Rebel Alliance?

In Legends, Palps knew that they were coming. It was hinted at for ages. It was a way for them to say it was the reason why he done what he done, why Thrawn worked with him, it was all prep work for their invasion. The Death Star was perfect for the Vong, a mobile base that could supply, refit several fleet of ships, while being a lethal force in itself.

Honestly, this, plus so many interactions on Reddit, have made me change my mind on how great the Empire would've been against the Vong. I'm a big fan of how the Empire would've been a lot more ruthless against the Vong, but I've seen a lot of good points about why the Empire would've done a terrible job against them. Apart from what this video says, there's something else I saw online: The Empire's much easier to manipulate than the New Republic. The Empire's got a ridiculous top down hierarchy system. It's so easy to take advantage of any corrupt person of rank and use them to undermine the Empire. Spies like Nom Anor would've had a field day getting people on the side of the invaders, and this would've completely limited how effective the Empire would've been.

One major oversight in your video is that we know from the Outbound Flight novel that not only was Palpatine aware of the Vong prior to the end of the Clones Wars, but the Chiss had actually fought them. #askeck what's the difference between concussion missiles and proton torpedoes? Like the pros and cons of each or how they do different jobs better than the other. I don't have a good reason why the Millenium Falcon and A-Wings have missiles instead of torpedoes like the X-Wings. I remember something describing how concussion missiles are fired in bursts (a la the Rogue Squadron games) so that some damage could bypass shields through small transient gaps, but that doesn't seem like a function that would be exclusive to concussion missiles. Visually on screen, there's no distinction between the two during the strike on the DS-II main reactor, so, I'm also puzzled as to where and why someone decided that the Millenium Falcon was actually firing concussion missiles.

I think you underestimate the Empire, yes they would have struggled adapting to different technology initially but Palpatine was already performing one of the key innovations the Jedi developed during the war, the Battle Meld. Also the Imperial's out and out stated Palpatine knew the Vong were coming decades in advance as he knew Vergere and his militarisation campaign was about preparing the galaxy for the threat. Without him they would have invaded the unarmed Old Republic with no standing armed forces, no military development from the Clone army and CIS Droid fleets to rely on as neither would have existed without him (CIS would still just be using the Droids as guards, they wouldn't have gone into mass producing an army without his encouragement to build a fleet to blockade Naboo or to begin an outright secessionist struggle).

The retcon to make it so Palpatine knew about the Vong and intentionally set out on the most shit stupid method of "preparing" the galaxy for them (which, outside of technological development that easily could have and probably would have happened regardless, put the galaxy in a *weaker* position) has never made sense and will never, ever jive with anything established prior. Or most things that he did *after* the retcon was first introduced. The Republic wasn't nearly as weak as is often presented - The Judicial Forces and the Jedi Order had all the capability needed to combat the Vong, it was organizational and political problems (many of them orchestrated *BY THE SITH* behind the scenes over the near century of peace post-Ruusan) that led to the decay and eventual Clone Wars - Which, again, orchestrated BY THE SITH in the first place. Remember that the Judicials had authority to absorb Defense Forces into themselves for the duration of a crisis, and for most of its existence had substantial military power all on its own. And if we want to talk about the CIS and their droid tech... Considering how badly military droid tech *regressed* post-Clone Wars, I'd argue there is no way to argue that was in any way a *benefit* for the galaxy. Yes, maybe the Clone Wars accelerated some battle droid development, but companies like the Trade Federation (and, really, *the Judicial Forces themselves*) would have invested into the tech eventually anyway, and imagine what effect *active* production lines of battle droids would have had on the Vong - Especially active production lines for Droidekas, BXs, and IG-100s.
@WedgekreeАй бұрын
The only person who said he was preparing the galaxy for the war was Palpatine to Thrawn purely to convince Thrawn to work with him. I've always seen that as Palpatine's ability to read someone and manipulate them. The Chiss fear /something/ from the outside galaxy coming, just not what. So Palpatine, figuring out what drives Thrawn, pushes his buttons. Then does Jack Sith when it comes to anything over the next 40'ish years of his reign to showcase how much attention he gave. Also Nom Amor was directly on his court in 'Dark Empire' which is pretty blatant of his complete fallibility with them.
@watcherzero5256Ай бұрын
@@TimberWolf99 Wasnt a Retcon, the Outbound Flight book had already introduced the concept that the Emperor was preparing the galaxy for an extra galactic threat, a species that used organic technology and had fleets of dark ships who had already been probing the galaxy ahead of their invasion. NJO books simply confirmed it was the Vong with Vergere saying she knew Sidious when she was spying for the Vong pre-clone wars. But to address your points. 1. The Jedi were not a military force, at the start of the Prequal trilogy it was explained they were negotiators who specifically were to avoid armed entanglements. It was the Clone Wars that made them soldiers. 2. The Reusan reforms were 1,000 years earlier. Sith being active in the century after the reforms, 1000-900 years BBY has no bearing on Palpatine. 3. The Judicials were a civil police force not a military force who could sequester PDF soldiers and ships to pursue criminals and cartels and investigated rogue Jedi behaviour, their largest ever previous mobilisation was a grand total of three cruisers. They were absorbed into the Grand Army of the Republic at the start of the Clone Wars. They were not an organised military branch. 4. Palpatine was in command of both sides, he could have chosen either side to ultimately win and the strengthening of the military accelerated after the Clone Wars rather than reversing. We have seen the Droid tech didn't regress as the Dark Trooper project was pursued with them being far more armoured and better armed than any droids fielded during the Clone Wars.

@@watcherzero5256 Point by point: Outbound Flight - January 31, 2006 The New Jedi Order: Vector Prime - October 5, 1999 Dictionary definition of retcon to have Palpatine know about and be "preparing" the galaxy for the Vong. 1. Negotiators with laser swords, and prequel-era EU materials (not to mention TPM and AotC) repeatedly show them being warriors. 2. I mean, sure. The point is, Palpatine was working off a long line of Sith manipulations and absolutely didn't do anything to reverse those (and in fact accelerated them) to "prepare" the galaxy for the Vong. 3. The Judicials started out as the last vestiges of the pre-Ruusan Republic military and carried out many military campaigns before settling is as peacekeepers and an anti-piracy force - However, prequel-era EU materials depict them being a military force (including pulling the ORSF's collective asses out of a fire they threw kerosene on), and even outside of that all of those officers and higher commanders we see in The Clone Wars and tie-in materials had to come from somewhere, and that somewhere was the Judicials. 4. You do not want to get into a long ass discussion about CIS politics, but in short - No, Palpatine didn't have two options for who won. His plans would have only worked had the Republic won and if the Confederacy somehow managed to, *despite* Palpatine and Dooku actively preventing it, it would have only resulted in an even worse Galactic Civil War down the line. Additionally, the Dark Trooper project was a failure that went nowhere and had zero bearing on where battle droid development *actually* ended up with the YVHs.

Yeah, I think the Empire would have done just as badly if not worse. If the Vong decide to invade over the Imperial era, they have the potential for a massive amount of chaos - starting revolutions on thousands of worlds, infiltrating bioweapons.. Palpatine will abandon the Outer Rim and everything outside the Core and leave them to be enslaved and to die. The Vong will have the entire Rim under their clawed thumb wanting revenge. Imperial tacticians were often horrible; ones like Palleon and Thrawn were almost the single exceptions. They'll have a far harder time adapting to Vong tactics. The Empire's ability to technologically adapt is also horrible. The Human supremacy of the Emipre meant they would not let aliens contribute to their technology. They will have a vastly harder time adapting to Vong technology and tactics. Particularly the Tarkin era Empire. Star Destroyers were meant as engines of fear, not the most effective ships of the line. They will struggle against Vong capital ships and be destroyed in large numbers, and Imperial doctrine lacks the flexibility to counter things outside the book (the fact that many officers who improvised away from doctrine tended to get executed helped ensure this). All the Empire really has is a complete willingness to rely upon bioweapons and extermination, which the Vong can do just as much to them. The Tarkin doctrine is obliterated when Imperial control is swept from the Outer Rim and the Empire withdraws to the core, and huge fleets are annihilated. The Vong fan massive revolts everywhere they can, which the Empire has plenty of potential for. Imperial bioweapons are met by Vong bioweapons in kind, vast swathes of the galaxy are depopulated, and quadrillions die. Much of galactic society will be obliterated as a functional society. In victory the New Republic focused on rebuilding. Even if they win, the Empire cares not for the rest of the galaxy. It will be a dark age that the galaxy had not seen since the Rakatan era, vast swathes of the galaxy completely depopulated from war and bioweapons that leave planets unsafe to inhabit for millenia, if not hundreds of thousands of years.

The thing that concerns me the most about the Vong… they had no force presence. Cool, but that was a choice they made in response they made to some now-dead faction in their own galaxy, some immeasurably long time ago. If midichlorians exist… I imagine some weird bacteria somehow imbedded in all the living cells, but also imbedded in not-living matter. Which… I’m just not going to try to make sense of, given the size difference between a cell and a molecule. Anyway, the galaxy from which the Vong come ALSO had the force, and that galaxy ended up being rendered uninhabitable during the conflict. For two galaxies (regular galaxies, mind… not stupid dwarf galaxies orbiting a regular spiral galaxy) to both have these midichlorians… I can even hand-wave whatever physics defying stuff Force users can do with them. But like… space ships operate like they’re in an atmosphere. Giant slow-ass bombers, with the local planet directly BEHIND them, can open their bomb bay doors (it is established that Venators had force field generators that kept the air in, but let larger stuff in and out, so I’ll accept the bombers can let bombs through but keep the air in) and “drop” bombs onto capital ships. Some people have said the bomber’s artificial gravity is what does that… but you could then rotate the bombers 90 degrees, and “drop” bombs at them from a distance. It’s basically a rail gun that uses gravity and not magnetism. The Executor was destroyed because an A-Wing flew at the bridge. No backup bridge. The shields for the bridge were taken out by another snub fighter flying over and shooting it. Why was the shield generator OUTSIDE the shield it generated? The entire battle of Endor used capital ships on both sides as obstacles for fighters to narrowly avoid… or sometimes blow up. Why did they never shoot? The Rebels entire dogma was build around hyperspace capable fighters showing up, a little ion canon to take down the shields, a little photon torpedo to break the ship, a lot of dodging the point defense canons…. Capital ships are just carriers for them. Which is fine, but all the star destroyers around the Death Star 2 had big-ass guns designed to kill capital ships. What is the point of AT-ATs? A Star Destroyer can enter atmosphere. One or two of them could crash into a planetary shield and bring it down. We learned this in Rogue One. To get them to crash into the planetary shield, they used Ion canons to fully disable one, and pushed it into a second. The pushing part did massive damage to both… one for sure had no shields, the other might have had shields briefly, but the whole top part got severed from the wedge. AT-ATs have legs. Star Destroyers can hover directly over a city / base. Star Destroyers can seriously fuck up unshielded planetary stuff. The Empire could literally have brought the fleet to Hoth, entered the atmosphere, head-butted their way through the shield (which was much less robust than the one around Scarif… didn’t cover the whole planet, even). I mean… it’s Science Fantasy, not Sci Fi. Doesn’t have to be scientifically accurate. But at least make it internally consistent. The Clone Wars happened, and 20yrs later robots aren’t allowed into a bar on a planet that wasn’t even part of the war. Believable, because emotions are weird. But if you tell me physics works some way, the design principals in that universe need to reflect that. Interdictions are a thing. I love that… hyperspace engines work this way, based on that, we can design around it with these. Why are there no mobile planetary shield ships? The shields exist. They’re smaller than ships (or else they couldn’t get one on Hoth). Set the shield to 30m smaller than the interdiction field… ship flies up, drops out of light speed, hits a wall and dies. Episode nine had big-but-regular guns… shoot the ground enough, dig to the core, blow the planet up. What about a blockade runner sized ship, with planetary shields on it? Not a ship, a big torpedo. Flies to the planet, impacts the ground face-first, digs a hole, same things as the Ep9 guns. Star killer Base… WAS a planet, in orbit around a star. It sucked a bunch of energy from the star, then lobbed it THROUGH HYPERSPACE. It would have exited hyperspace at the edge of the gravity well… been visible for a while, then melted the planets. Which was shown. And yet Starkiller base still had a star, whose mass was relatively unchanged, because the planet didn’t fly off into space. Why is it built into a planet? The Death Star had engines… less a space station, more a dreadnaught disguised as a moon. Darksaber (the Legends novel, not the Mandolorean sword) had a Death Star gun, without the “looks like a moon” part. Always had a fleet with it, like real world carriers. But it had engines. And the dumbest part… the fact that the New Republic’s seat of government moved, and was currently on Hazni Prime (sp?) had to be explained via other sources, because the movie just skipped that part. The freaking Star Wars Resistence cartoon did a better job. How big is the infrastructure to govern a galaxy-wide Republic? They moved the capital every seven years. If you told me they’d taken all the guns out, and turned the last remaining Super Star Destroyer into that… fine. But no, they got all new buildings. Every time. Presumably the capital leaving would ruin the economy of the old planet, right? All the restaraunt owners and used speeder salesmen moved all of their stuff, too? Compared to our world… the EU capital is Brussels. There was a lot of asbestos in the buildings they purchased, so they then started setting up “temporary” offices elsewhere, until that got fixed. It was fixed decades ago. And yet, some stupid law requires that most of the EU infrastructure packs up and drives a couple hundred miles to Strassbourg for a week. Then goes back to Brussels. They got the entire New Republic so lean, the entire thing can move to a new system, but every city ever to host the Olympics ends up declaring bankruptcy because of all the road, bridge, stadium, and hotel repairs they pushed through. I get that George Lucas wanted to show the politics in the sequels. I’m even interested in that topic. But do not half-ass me when you do it. Outer rim worlds allow slavery of fleshy beings. Why? The Trade Alliance could send one Lucherhulk (sp?) to an uninhabited moon without atmosphere. Bunch of B1s step out with pick-axes, and five years later that moon is a fully automated factory. It’s solar powered, self repairing, has a shield, really hard to attack, because no atmosphere and in a hidden location. Pollute all you want. No radiation shielding, because it’s just droids. There have been lots of coups and riots for meat slaves… robot slaves had one robot, who got blowed up the first time she tried a revolt. (Having a black American actor playing the part of her owner… interesting choice.) Anyway, this rant stopped being relevant to the video a while back. I think I was saying something about how midichlorians must go all the way back to Star Wars version of the Big Bang, to be in two spiral galaxies. But whatever. My real point is that trying to imply that they’re just like us, except… not a sustainable story. If you’re gonna lean into the Fantasy part, look at Tolkien, or the Shadow & Bone books/show. Even the cartoon with the actual sailing ships moving around in the air… it’s not space, doesn’t work like space, stop expecting it to work like space. Lucas wanted that space aesthetic, without all the physics that makes space the way it is. And then JJ Abrams took all that and fed it to ChatGPT or something. Starkiller is a base, not a person. Midichlorians are a thing. Asteroid fields somewhere near Hoth and Bespin have gigantic living things in them… open vacuum, but the monster can open its mouth to bite something, and suddenly that something lands… like “down” is a meaningful concept. They only need an oxygen mask to exit the ship… like… what? Do you use physics or not? Not? Okay, then stop pretending you do.

Do you think people such as Lucas put as much thought into their works as you? He was just trying to make a fun movie, for a wide audience. He wasn't looking for internal logic and consistency. That logic came with the expanded universe.

When you say the Vong live outside the force, could Palpatine still have used his force lightning & force storms against them? Or would it have been nullified? (I never read the NJO books)
@MandaloreTheReclaimerАй бұрын
i think by "live outside the force" it just means a jedi cannot sense them or read or effect their mind with the force, there's a part in one of the books where luke is fighting a few vong and as he's fighting he picks up rocks and hurls them at the back of the vong creating an opening to strike. I think lightning would still effect them.
@seawind930Ай бұрын
@@MandaloreTheReclaimer It also makes them resistant because at one point someone was having a dance with the darkside and they couldn't find the Vong in the force and it was harder to hit them with Lightning

It's also important to remember that a big part of Vong strategy was sowing dissension in the New Republic and pretending to be allies with disaffected groups. I can imagine that strategy being even more effective against the Empire. I can imagine a scenario where they convince the rebels to work with them against the empire, forcing the empire to divide its attention among a thousand different problems. If they attacked during the height of the Empire, I think it would have gone far worse for the empire than it did for the New Republic.

I always imagined the Vong's plans for tackling the Empire would have been much like how they handled the New Republic, with agents seeding dissent, causing breakdowns in the Imperial chain of command, pushing ambitious would-be warlords to splinter off and try to carve out their own domains, forcing Palpatine to bring down overwhelming force to quash dissent, and thus weakening the Imperial war machine from within.

It was also pretty much summed up by Han Solo how the Empire would have done it (and how it would have failed). Though the sight of Palpatine's Nostril superweapon would have had been something to behold... Also the Empire would have also suffered from much of the same mistakes that certain totalitarian regime experiences these days in a certain conflict, with underlings being too affraid to report bad news to their superiors.
@shyneguyАй бұрын
As someone before me stated the Empire would have had a better/swifter response. The thread of thought from a couple novels, Plagueis, Outbound flight etc.. When Palpatine killed Plagueis the force gave him the vision of the Vong invading the galaxy, it's part of the reason why he was so obsessed with super weapons (also convenient for keeping the galaxy down). In Outbound flight I believe A Vong force was alluded to by Thrawn that the Chiss were already combating on the fringes of the Ascendency. Palpatine believed the vision and once encountered I believe Palpatine would have taken it very seriously because of that and well he can't rule over and Vong-formed galaxy.

The Empire is a fictional fascist regime. And like real-life fascist regime, it is more obsessed with the appearances of efficiency than actual efficiency. The constant research for super-weapons that will, alone, change everything, is very reminescent of the nazis' fixation on creating some "Wunderwaffen" that will turn the war to their advantage, while ignoring the realities of the war: Logistics was against them, and they had an unstable and corrupt government. In a totalitarian or authoritarian, the leader will often make himself impossible to replace. He will centralize enormous amounts of power, and even when he delegates, he will make it so the people to whom he delegates power are in constant competition among one another, so in the end they'll always end up needing to turn to him for the solution. Palpatine did this, but real life dictators also did this. Hitler, for example, almost never gave written orders. All of it was verbal, and most of the time, contradicting himself when combining the orders of different ministers (Who would then start bickering and opposing each other and need to go back to the dictator so he would tell them again what to do). Furthermore, in authoritarian regimes, the people who bring good news to the dictator often get promoted, while people who bring bad news risk even execution. This disincentivize accurate reports and create a culture of lies. Because of that, totalitarian dictators are often living in a completely alternate reality. A good example of this was Stalin, who was constantly given false report to avoid his wrath. With all of this, we can imagine just how inefficient and corrupt the Empire was. And thinking it would have been more united or more efficient in their fight against the Vong is just because of a cultural error people have done in subconsciously buying in the fascist propaganda (not in a way that make the people who think that fascists, mind you, but just people who could start believing that there are certain contexts in which authoritarianism can be a better solution When it's never the case).

Cohesion during war creates successful battles. Under one leader, Palpatine, the forces would rally and even the individual, because it is a stable focal point of command. Too many voices creates dissent and distraction. For the Empire.

Can you imagine the entire Imperial war machine facing a single enemy on a united front? Palpatine would absolutely milk this crisis to make his Empire look like saviors and go full throttle on Dark Empire tech.
@eds1942Ай бұрын
That was the assumption. But not likely. Palpatine was a master political manipulator. Nom Anor’s and others would’ve just upped their sedition campaign on a populace that was already feed up or tired of life under the Empire’s thumb, especially after Alderaan’s destruction. Which his campaign of fear (as mentioned above) and super weapons work against. The Vong would’ve seen should weapons as absolutely blasphemous as went all out on destroying them. Plus Palpatine was arrogant with his mastery of the Force and gift of foresight, while the Vong would been largely invisible to him. And so they wouldn’t seem as big of a threat as they are. The inflexibility of his orders and standard Imperial tactics would only work so well, which would’ve brought out the competiveness of their brass and Moffs just to adapt to an unknown and united enemy, which employed unknown tech.

I love how everybody thinks the Vong War was the most apocalyptic event ever that destroyed half the Galaxy, whereas in all actuality it wiped about 0,37% of the known space's inhabitants (which to be fair is a massive number in its own right). There had been more lethal events in galactic history.
@TheChristianPsychopathАй бұрын
The scope of the Vong Invasion was pretty massive. They destroyed several worlds beyond the sentient death toll. There's a few other mass death events like the Hutts creating the Ash worlds, but not many. And the Vong did mass enslavement as well.
@emzonik8851Ай бұрын
@@TheChristianPsychopath Of course, it was definitely one of the most destructive events in star wars history, but even still people tend to overestimate its scale when it comes to the actual lore. I don’t blame them because the books' depiction of it does make such a mistake rather easy to make. Nevertheless, looking at the data we're talking about a couple of hundered vongformed planets out of billions and 368 trillion sentients killed out of more than 100 quadrillion. Having that in mind it actually makes sense that the later books don't focus so much on the post-invasion impact, the galaxy's just too big for t to drastically change most of it. Compare it fir example to the candorian plague, which killed was more than a half of the Galactic Core and played a major factor in the Dark Age.
@TheChristianPsychopathАй бұрын
@@emzonik8851 Populated, particularly heavily populated worlds are rarer than just "planets". We had about two hundred named worlds. The Vong took over like 1/4 to 1/3 of the galactic map, knocked out the entire HoloNet and controlled several major hyperspace routes. But also I think it's a matter of proximity to the characters. I had to look up the candorian plague. It's a passing mention in a handful of books, so while relevant to galactic history, it is less relevant to the characters most people are invested in because of a 1000+ years of separation. However, I do think later books reference the impact in nearly every book... so don't think it was "glossed over" so much as people not paying attention. I *do* wish we had gotten smaller scale stories during the recovery period instead of a 10 year time jump with only Dark Nest filling the gap.
@emzonik8851Ай бұрын
@@TheChristianPsychopath Actually they took more, at least looking at the map in The Essential Atlas, their dominion at its peak stretched across c. 40-45% of the known galaxy. But that’s actually the thing, don't assume the majority of planets in there were devastated or even taken over by the Vong. That's not how you expand territory in SW, you don’t capture every populated planet one by one, just the key strategic points. This is especially important in Vong's case as the direct reason for their inevitable defeat was an overwhelming lack of numbers compared to galactic forces. They've spread their forces far too thin and as the Essential Guide To Warfere says, even those planets that surrendered were often left alone so long as they paid their tribute and swore loyalty to the Vong (tho they probably thought they'd transform those later on as well). Yes that's right, but it does nonetheless debunk some of the misconceptions about the Vong War being the single biggest or deadliest period the Galaxy had ever witnessed. Its brutality does stand out when it comes to the "main" or modern Galactic setting, just like you said, but even here we can't really say for certain its death toll surpassed, for example the whole Galactic Civil War. ANNUAL probably yeas, but the latter lasted 21 years, where a number of planets and even a star system got completely vaporised, fried with base delta zero (worse than vongforming) or simply ravaged through ground warfere. The difference is that the Bantam Books emphasised the character-driven narratives and focused mostly on the POVs of main heroes like the big 3, rather than how the war actually transpired across the wider galaxy. Exactly, it is referenced and that's more than enough. The thing is, some fans complain it's still far too little. Why? Because of my point, they think the Vong War was a literal galaxy-wide apocalypse that destroyed so much, that all stories across the next thousand years should focus entirely on its ramifications. That's inaccurate, isn't it.
