Since all Star Wars combat is based on WW2 in one form or another, one might use this comparison to explain the Laser Cannon vs. Turbolaser divide: Laser cannons are equivalent to autocannons such as the 40mm anti-air guns used on WW2 ships. Turbolasers are equivalent to full-sized naval guns, and the lighter ones can, like the ubiquitous 5-inch gun of the WW2 US Navy, be in defensive roles as well.

You can't apply real physics to Star Wars ;) At least in Legends but I think also in canon, blasters are stated as being particle guns with some of them being plasma guns (most notably the DC-15 series, which is why they were very effective against droids). Blaster technology is mostly used in small arms and light cannons while laser cannons are much more powerful but mostly used in spaceships and large vehicles like the AT-AT (the AT-AT's heavy chin cannons are lasers while it's secondary cannons are blasters). Laser technology is also much older. In the Pre-Republic and early Republic eras, laser weapons used by infantry were mostly heavy stationary cannons comparable to the E-Web repeating blaster, while the standard portable guns were mostly slug-throwers. There were also portable laser cannons but they were really heavy and required a backpack containing a large energy pack, similar to early lightsaber technology (lightsabers are plasma weapons, however).

Carolus Magnus no, they are plasma canons. The light is focused through the kyber Crystal which is then applied to the tibina gass, ionising it, and then releasing it as a bolt. They are plasma canons and they work on the same principles as the blasters do.

I've done some thinking about star wars weapons, and I think the term "Turbolaser Battery" usually refers to a set of turbolaser weapons that are bunched up together to focus all their firepower on the same target. A great visualization of this is the Bellator-class Star Dreadnought. You can visibly see the turrets grouped up into small clusters and large clusters rather than evenly distributed across the entire surface of the ship.

Yup, it's also commonly used to delineate a set of four turrets in a formation like you've described. Even if it's a grouping of eight, it'd be two batteries. Not taking into account number of barrels.

7:22, ion cannons are also useful against shields, just a note. The electrical discharge they produce was specifically noted at several points as being especially potent and draining shields, allowing the turbolasers to then finish them off.

proton beams, actually. Not lasers, strictly speaking in real world terms those would be considered particle accelerators. Most proton beams are of the composite-beam type, where multiple proton beams are connected to deal more damage. Composite-beam weapons are also reffered to as 'lasers' of course, like most star wars energy weapons, but they arent literal lasers like our understanding of them. There are a handful of non-composite-beam proton beam weapons though, such as the star destroyer Accuser and the Lancet aerial artillery.

It’s a space based building exploration game that has realistic voxel damage. I would suggest checking it out. If you want a familiar face, check out Captain Shack. He does Empire at War and Space Engineers. Edit: I would like to add how there is a HUGE Star Wars community in Space Engineers. There are plenty of builds and mods for Star Wars stuff. The ARMCO mods for Star Wars shops is a good example. And Captain Shack is leading that modding team.

missles really work kinda like turbo-lasers but are individualy smaller because its a single munition instead of a huge gun connected to a reactor but if you but 200 munitions launchers on a ship the cost of all the missles builds up really fast so turbo-lasers are used more

I had a cool idea for a ship: the Overlord-Class Battlecruiser (ship) These have turrets that slide along rails that run through the middle of the ship, and thus, the firepower can be spread in such a way that you can easily broadside someone, no questions asked. The ship is an irregular pentagon, with two massive turbolaser batteries near its engine bays. Only a few turrets actually slide, and these are medium-sized batteries. The super batteries on the sides can turn a little, but only up and down. It handles any assault pretty well, except for along the back, however, its sister ship class, the Overseer-class Heavy Cruiser, is a supercarrier which can provide massive fighter screens if need be.

Fun fact for anyone that was wondering why they don’t just nuke the spaceships: A conventional nuclear missile has an initial blast radius of about ten miles, so essentially everything within a 20 mile sphere would be either scorched or disintegrated entirely. However, the nuclear radiation from the blast, not limited by gravity or wind in a vacuum, would theoretically spread infinitely until it is pulled into a gravity well of some sort. For reference, roughly 4 conventional nuclear missiles would completely destroy the Supremacy, so it would be completely overkill on something like an Imperial-I class Star Destroyer.

Nuclear weapons were used by the Mandalorians in Legends canon for planetary bombardment, launched from capital ships. It's also heavily implied that pre-Republic naval engagements and planetary sieges in Legends heavily involved nuclear ordinance. The Ash Worlds, a region of dead planets near Hutt Space, were said to bear the radioactive scars of nuclear bombardments, the result of a genocidal campaign by the Hutts against the colonial reaches of Xim the Despot's empire. My theory is that nuclear weapons in the Star Wars universe became obsolete, which is why they weren't used very often.

The turbo laser canon weapons in Star Wars are essentially laser-generated plasma bolts, similar to the Imperial Las tech weapons from 40K, with the main difference only being more ammo is in the form of energy cells and fewer chances of blowing up, regular blasters use a combination of railgun & plasma ignited by laser to amp the power damage output, the main reason ionized gas is added to be converted into plasma is that laser beam itself that ignited the thermal plasma bolt used in the past would dissipate very quickly after exiting the barrel even after the improvement to the lens, weapons material for the pistols/riffles/canons, making conventional laser weapons useless, unless they were designed to work on the Turbo laser parameters, But rail gun,mass accelerator tech exists in Star Wars and appears in the form of capital ship class weapons for delivering warheads similar to the Macro Canons of Imperium from 40K or the MAC guns from the Halo, alternatively, they can fire rockets if the need for long-range engagement against another capital ship or cluster ammo for dealing with fighters, these canons are very much broadside weapons, Flak canon are as the name implies weapons designed to deal with enemy fighters by firing frgmentation projectiles at them akin to WW II ones, only bigger, Particle canons also exist and are often seen on capital ships as replacements for the rail canons since they did not need ammo to being with The old Sith Empire did use gravity weapons during the times of the Great Hyper Space but those are long gon, Missiles are there in many shapes and forms, nuclear ones even but they make our looks silly, some versions can even target enemy ships in Hyperspace or be launched via hyperspace into a planet

"Crossing the T" is a classic naval strategy that was used through WW2. The Battle of Leyte Gulf in the Eastern Visayan region in the Philippines was the last major use of this tactic. Turrets were movable in ~270 degrees horizontal and ~70 degrees vertical.

Shadow Of Sundered Star I don’t know about that... Star Wars is famous for expanding on everything that can possibly be expanded on. There are frequently entire stories crafted around a single ship that appeared for seconds in the movies or another source. The universe is almost as fleshed out as our own. The Legends storyline goes before 25,000 BBY to after 150 ABY. The Canon is a lot less expansive, as it has only had 4 years to expand, but it is still incredibly well fleshed out.

+dariomasi9 Actually it's been mentioned that while they can teleport to other universes they can't teleport to a SPECIFIC point within the same universe which is why they wanted to get the teleportation technology from Black Mesa so that means they'd still need to travel in space. And of course they'd immediately reverse engineer the firsthyper drive they got ahold of to improve upon it then add it to their arsenal and make their job easier (That is if they didn't have something like it already.)

They are essentially naval cannons, but instead of big hunks of steel its heated plasma. Laser cannons are more like a Bofors or an Orelikon anti aircraft weapons, and blasters are pretty much plasma slinging... well... guns

Yup! A lot of the stuff in SW is based off WWII tech, that's the reason it's red lasers for Rebels, and green for the Empire instead of the other way around. German tracers during WWII were green, and American were orange-y-red.

@@5peciesunkn0wn Kinda ironic associating America with a small rebellion, given that in WW2 (and today) it's probably the single most powerful country on the planet. To make matters worse, the allies included the UK, which at the time very much still was a literal empire that spanned half the planet. (even if that empire wasn't so cohesive perhaps) Although you can't claim them to be the good guys in any way, the Germans and especially the Japanese were very much the underdogs of that war. (as in they were relatively small countries that somehow got it into their head they could take on much bigger rivals.)

It's moronic when space travellers make ships that are less durable than modern tanks and have primary anti-capital-ship weapons that are weaker than 1980s hand-held rocket launchers. The pathetic "orbital bombardment" of the rebel base in Rebels made me want to choke everyone involved with the project. At least the later Legends stuff fairly consistently portrayed relatively realistically-powerful warships. Until that damn Clone Wars show (the new one, obviously).

Many sci-fi stories refer to a space force as a navy because they operate in similar manners. A navy consists of fleets of capital ships with smaller support ships and/or fighters, and so does a space force, so that's why the Imperial Navy refers to the star destroyers etc and not to water-based vessels.

The best comparison I can think of for turbolasers vs laser cannons (and this is mainly because I've been playing craploads of World of Warships lately) is naval artillery vs anti-air emplacements on WWI/WWII-era ships. Naval artillery is used for ship-to-ship combat, just like turbolasers are. Artillery is slow and heavy, limiting its usefulness against aerial craft (starfighters and bombers, in Star Wars). Like turbolasers, it comes in different calibres relative to the size of the vessel: destroyers and light cruisers will carry smaller guns, generally in single or double gun arrangements, while heavy cruisers, battlecruisers and battleships will have much heavier ordinance which tend to be mounted in triple or even quadruple gun turrets. While smaller artillery calibres will rotate and reload faster than their heavier counterparts, they're all too slow and cumbersome to hit aerial craft. Anti-air guns, however, are the opposite. Fast-firing and moving, they're much more suitable for hitting smaller, nimbler targets like aircraft. While you *could* turn them on other sea-faring ships, their shorter range and much smaller calibre will ensure they have limited to no effect on the larger, more heavily-armoured vessels. As such, anti-air guns are reserved solely for that purpose: fending off aircraft.

A good way of explaining turbolasers vs. lasers would be to compare them to real-world naval weapons. A battleship for example would have its primary guns for engaging other capital ships, secondary guns to defend agianst smaller ships like corvettes or torpedo boats, anti-aircraft cannons and auto-cannons, which might also serve dual-purpose for defense against small ships.

To expand upon what chrysller ryu said: Turbo lasers are the anti-ship (other naval vessels), bombardment (siege/anti-structure operations) 16in guns of WWII battleships. Laser cannons are the Bofors 40mm flak cannon and the .50 cal machine guns. Bombardment: such as the naval bombardment of Iwo Jima prior to invasion by US troops. Would have like to see you address some other common weapons a little more, in particular the cannons we see being used by the Republic ships in the opening space battle of Revenge of the Sith. We can see that they used some kind of large cartridge, that was being offloaded onto the decks once spent (much like modern naval guns), but its hard to ascertain if these were some kind of projectile like a rail gun, or if this was a stored energy charge (which might make more sense, as there would be less energy drain on the host capital ship)

The thing is both can be used for both. We've seen an ISD's octuple heavy turbolasers used to smack fighters, and we've also seen the quad lasers on say an Arquiten used against capital ships. They are specialized, yes, but not completely
