The one time Canada cared about the Spengler Cup

Today I wanted to talk about the 2012 Spengler Cup, which saw a substantial influx of NHL talent due to the NHL lockout. We'll talk about all that and more on today's NHL and hockey video!

I played in the Spengler Cup that year for Fribourg. Lost 5-2 to Canada in the semis. It was probably the most fun I had playing hockey at a professional level. Amazing crowd and atmosphere, also fun to catch up with and run into former teammates along the way. Every hotel has a mini rink for kids to play on. It’s a tournament I wish every player could experience because even though it’s serious it also reminded me of the tournaments i played as a kid.

The Spengler Cup ( along with World Junior Championship ) has been a Christmas time staple for me for years now. It ain't the holiday season without Spengler Cup hockey.

The Spengler Cup is also the second oldest international trophy of hockey, just after the Stanley Cup!

Good thing you added the "international" caveat to your statement because the Goodall Cup in Australia is older than the Spengler Cup and the second oldest hockey trophy in the world but it's just in Australia and not international.

I'm from Germany and follow the second German division DEL2. I remember in 2012 the rival team of my hometown Ice Lions all of a sudden had Wayne Simmonds and Chris Stewart on their roster. It was absolutely crazy what these guys could do on the ice and EVERYBODY talked about it. Definitely a cool experience.

As a swede, I can’t recall this at all. Looks and sound awesome, we always love to se our countrymen playing along side eachother! Once they reach the big bucks over in the states, it rarely happens, even in the WC. I personally would love this type of event again. Love the content, keep it up ❤️

Gotta love Ryan Smyth. The man would do anything to score a goal for my Oilers and Team Canada. He had a muffin shot and mediocre skating but he was all heart. He's even scored a goal deflecting the puck in with his heart once. True story.

I wish there was something similar to the world cup for hockey (and all major sports really.) Like where the best players always go represent their country. They not only want to, they're desperate to. Like make it considered part of their legacy. Such a missed oppurtunity. Especially hockey and baseball. Some of my favorite sports stories are international matches where it was truly best of the best.

No, the all-star weekend fun isn't what is used to be. No one really tries anymore. I don't know if it's my nostalgia or not, but it seemed like in the 90s, players tried to win the competitions and to win the games. Now, it's just pure goofiness, I don't know if it was always like this or when it changed.
